One of the very cool nuances to Southwest's story is that our Founder and Chairman Emeritus Herb Kelleher—and our current Chairman, President, and CEO Gary Kelly—share the same birthday, which happens to be today, March 12th! Herb and Gary share a lot more than just a birthday. They both share a deep passion and LUV for Southwest Airlines. They recently had a chance to sit down together and talk about Southwest, the future, and thoughts on Leadership. We thought it was only appropriate to share a couple minutes from their conversation on their birthday. We hope you'll enjoy the video, and please join us in wishing these two Southwest Legends a very Happy Birthday! Cheers, fellas!

Our founder, Herb Kelleher, is famous for saying...well...he's famous for saying a lot of things. But among them that "the Business of Business is People." He recognized that - more than advertising, more than low fares - it would be our Employees that would be the key to our success, because they would be key to building positive relationships with our Customers. At Southwest Airlines, we truly value the relationships we build with our Customers and see every encounter as an opportunity to connect. And, because our Employees are guided by "The Golden Rule," they instinctively know what to do to take care of our Customers in times of need. Sometimes it is a simple as getting someone's bag to a flight on time, and sometimes it can be much deeper than that. Watch this video to see a very touching example of a Southwest Employee taking care of a Customer in need.

Southwest Airlines Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to use an environmentally friendly engine-washing system in an effort to save on fuel and cut carbon emissions. The Dallas-based carrier is using the EcoPower system offered by East Hartford, Conn.-based flight technology firm Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Pratt & Whitney said Southwest's annual fuel-cost savings could exceed $20 million. The airline also stands to cut 135 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually as a result. The arrangement with Pratt & Whitney comes as Southwest, along with the rest of the airline industry, faces record-high fuel prices that have led many to trim capacity and levy fees on travelers. Southwest in the first quarter reported a 63 percent drop in profit to $34 million, partially driven by a 34 percent hike in fuel and oil costs compared with the same period of 2007. Southwest said it is performing regular washes at airports in Orlando, Fla., and Oakland, Calif., where Pratt & Whitney has established new service centers. The EcoPower equipment uses a closed-loop system with atomized water to wash aircraft engines, avoiding contaminant runoff, Pratt & Whitney said. The patented system is considered more effective and faster than traditional engine-washing processes. Pratt & Whitney parent United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) employs more than 225,000 worldwide and in 2007 recorded $4.22 billion in profit on $54.8 billion in revenue.

The idea for the Travelin' Taylor Tour was hatched months ago, when Tim and Shane from Taylor Guitars popped in to Southwest Headquarters in Dallas, just to see what was going on and bounce ideas off each other. It's amazing what similar personalities can get done. In the above video, Taylor Guitars' Andy Powers declares, "The best musician is, in a lot ways, the one having the most fun." At Southwest, we know all about fun. The premise of the tour is simple: six current and rising stars will play iconic Taylor Guitars on six different flights, and have a lot of fun while doing it. These aren't just any guitars, though. As you'll see in the video, the guitars have been customized by Southwest's and Taylor's designers. Each design element is as specific as the guitar's expertly crafted wood. And here's the kicker: each artist will sign the guitar, and you have a chance to win it by entering at southwest.com/taylortour.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES UNVEILS ILLINOIS ONE Airline Honors the State of Illinois and City of Chicago with Specialty Aircraft CHICAGO -- April 14, 2008- Southwest Airlines today honored the State of Illinois with the unveiling of Illinois One, a Boeing 737 emblazoned with an artist's rendering of the state flag. Southwest Airlines' top leadership celebrated the high-flying tribute to the State of Illinois at an event in a Chicago Midway hangar with Mayor Richard M. Daley and local Employees. "We are thrilled to honor Illinois with this beautiful aircraft; it is truly a testament to the great relationship we have developed with our Chicago Midway Customers and a tribute to our local hard-working Employees," said Southwest Airlines Chairman Herb Kelleher. "Our pride for Illinois will now fly high over the 64 cities Southwest serves." Since beginning service in Illinois at Chicago Midway in 1985, Southwest Airlines has grown from eight to 227 daily nonstop departures. As Southwest Airlines has increased its flights, it also has increased its need for space. In 2004, with the help of Mayor Daley's outstanding Leadership, Southwest Airlines participated in the Terminal Development Project at Chicago Midway. The expansion has allowed Southwest Airlines to meet and exceed a promise of growth and has created an ideal environment for offering the Legendary Southwest-brand of Customer Service for Chicago travelers. "Southwest's success at Chicago Midway would not have been possible without the sum of many parts, and this beautiful aircraft is a result of our collective hard work," said Gary Kelly, Southwest's Chief Executive Officer. "We have a great partnership with the State of Illinois and the city of Chicago. Together we have all given our Illinois Customers a high-quality travel experience and low fares." More than 500 Southwest Airlines Employees and community leaders celebrated the unveiling today at one of the airline's hangars. Attendees waved Illinois flags, took photos with a bald eagle, and were the first to see Illinois One up close and personal. Illinois One joins twelve other 737s in Southwest's fleet that carry a unique paint scheme: Arizona One, California One, Lone Star One (Texas), Nevada One, New Mexico One, three Shamu aircraft (Sea World), Silver One (celebrating Southwest's 25th anniversary), Triple Crown One (recognizing Southwest's top rankings for ontime performance, baggage handling, and Customer satisfaction), Maryland One, and Slam Dunk One (tribute to our NBA partnership). The newest aircraft in the Southwest Airlines fleet is truly a work of labor and art, requiring 26 people working three shifts over the course of six days to paint. Over 93 gallons of paint and 10 different colors make up Illinois One. Chicago Midway Airport is Southwest's second largest operation in terms of daily departures with 227 daily nonstop flights to 47 cities. Southwest Airlines, the nation's largest carrier in terms of domestic passengers enplaned, currently serves 64 airports in 32 states. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates nearly 3,400 flights a day and has 34,000+ Employees systemwide.

May 1 is Loyalty Day, a time to reflect on our loyalties, and the Freedom to express them. At Southwest, we pride ourselves on being a Symbol of Freedom, and loyalty is a big deal to us, as well. But to confine our appreciation to one day would be too limiting, so we decided to extend it into the entire month. Throughout May, we'll be appreciating the loyalty shown by our Customers, our Employees, and People who are loyal to making the world a better place. We will focus on People who are loyal to our children, our future, and our Freedom. Of course, we also want to hear from you about who/what you appreciate! Here's how you can do that: Tweet us: http://twitter.com/southwestair Facebook us: http://facebook.com/southwest Email us: email@example.com The above video features James Easterling, one of our most loyal Customers.
