http://carssimplifed.com/ - The fan control switch on your dashboard may be often overlooked, but there is more than meets the eye going on behind your dashboard! In this video, Steve explains how a fan control switch does its job, and how a blower motor resistor works with it. The blower motor resistor changes the speed of the fan, but the switch on your dash board tells the resistor what resistance to select. How to Remove Valve Springs (Overhead Valve Removal Tool) • Cars Simplified

02:23
http://carssimplifed.com/ • This episode of Cars Simplified: Season Three reveals how to remove valve springs with a "Universal" Overhead Valve Removal Tool (Autocraft AC521 is shown in the video, but other companies make the tool as well) and different techniques that can be used, including a fast and aggressive approach. The tool shown in the video is designed to grab on to and compress the valve spring, so that the keepers can be removed. Once the keepers are out of the way, the spring and retainer can be pulled out of the way, and the valve is free to be pulled out. The head must be off the block to perform this properly. Steve just used the neodymium magnet he had laying around, but you can buy one that works better for your tool. How a Brake Light Switch Works • Cars Simplified

01:48
http://carssimplifed.com/ • Have you ever wondered what's inside a brake light switch and how they work? Steve from Cars Simplified takes apart a brake light switch to show you how brake light switches function, and it turns out to be more complicated than a simple on/off switch. Steve breaks it down into easy-to-understand pieces, and visuals are provided every step of the way. The right side of the thumbnail displays a Beck/Arnley part number 201-1566 switch for many Toyota applications, as well as a few other brands, but the part in the video is a stock OEM switch. How to Apply Bulb Grease & Why it's Important • Cars Simplified

02:16
http://carssimplifed.com/ - Bulb grease; you have probably been recommended it at the auto parts store, and you probably turned it down. This video explains what bulb grease/dielectric grease is used for, what the best practices are, and generally why you should consider using it for most of your light bulbs. Bulb grease can also be called dielectric grease. Both of them are a clear-white silicone-based thick grease that is waterproof and has excellent sealing properties. Applying it properly on your lighting components will extend their life, make assembly and disassembly easier, and reduce the chances of costly damages happening. Dielectric grease is not conductive, so unless you are confident that you will be still be making metal to metal contact at all electrical connections, it is better to not risk putting any bulb/dielectric grease on the electrical contacts. Use your best judgement and apply only where you are confident. Power Steering Flush: Full Power Steering System Fluid Flushing • Cars Simplified

http://carssimplifed.com/ • This is a thorough way to flush a power steering system. This may take more effort than other methods, but it has much better results and does so with one process. In a future video, we will see how to do a quick power steering flush, which is less thorough than this video's process. Flushing the power steering system like this is the best way to take care of a power steering system, especially if you are not sure how well it has been maintained in the past. How to Clean a Mass Airflow Sensor with MAF Cleaner • Cars Simplified

02:46
http://carssimplifed.com/ • Mass air flow sensors are one of the most expensive sensors on a car, sometimes even topping the list! That being the case, it is important to make sure that it is cleaned properly and carefully. This video will show you how to do that, as well as what to look for. Mass air flow sensors are what the vehicle's engine computer uses to figure out how much air is entering the engine. It uses this information along with information from other sensors to determine how much fuel to use. Even though your vehicle has an air filter, tiny amounts of contaminants still get through. These can collect on the mass air flow sensor element over time, and slightly skew the reading, leading to increased fuel consumption and reduced power. Using a proper MAF cleaner can remove these microscopic deposits and restore lost power and fuel efficiency. The folks at Penray were generous enough to send us three of their products to try, and this Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner (Penray #2520) was one of them. This is not the first time Steve has used their products; his experience with other products is the only reason this product was tried, and so far no problems! Steve's notes: Using the Cars Simplified profile on Facebook, I commented on a post by Penray about their new product saying I'd like to try it out. A Penray representative got in touch and sent us a pack containing Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner, Fuel System Cleaner, and their 4.0 product. The pack showed up in the May/June unboxing video. Not a lot else was said, but the rep was courteous and didn't expect anything in exchange, which is the best way to do things in my book. Why Do Cars Burn Oil? Part 1: PCV Valves • Cars Simplified

01:09
http://carssimplifed.com/ - Why do cars burn oil? In this part, we cover both the most common (in newer cars) and usually least expensive to fix cause. PCV valves cause engines to burn oil by raising the internal pressure to levels that the gaskets and seals can't handle and it pushes oil out through them. While not technically "burning", this still causes cars/engines to lose oil over time, but only when running. This is part one in a multi-part series on oil consumption in engines/cars. This is part one of a multi-part series on what causes engines to burn oil or otherwise consume it. How to Wrap an EGR Valve Tube • Cars Simplified

02:59
http://carssimplifed.com/ • Learn how to wrap your EGR valve tube to improve engine bay temperatures and prevent the melting of wires, hoses, and plastic parts! The product shown in the video is Design Engineering Inc. (DEI) exhaust wrap, two inches wide, 50 feet long. It is normally used for header wrapping, as well as for wrapping other larger exhaust pipes. The one inch wide product would probably be a better choice for this project, but the EGR valve doesn't get as hot as other exhaust components, so layering doesn't become a big issue. Wrap the pipe of your exhaust gas recirculation valve with exhaust wrap, layered so that the overlap only occurs once. Use stainless steel ties (they are similar to zip ties, but made out of metal and with a different locking mechanism) to secure the beginning part of the wrap. When you wrap, occasionally pull to ensure a tight wrap. When you get close to the end, be sure to leave room for installation and bind the end together with another stainless steel tie. Shown here is the EGR valve and tube from a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, with the 3100 SFI (LG8/3.1 V6) engine. If you are looking to replace just the bushings, you just follow the same steps but reuse your old bolt. This video also shows how easy it is to install a sway bar link kit on a 2007 Ford Explorer (2006-2010 range as well) with rear wheel drive. Diagnosis: EGR Valve Causing Difficult Start-Up • Cars Simplified

01:41
http://carssimplifed.com/ • One cold morning in late November, a 2013 Honda Pilot had difficulty starting up. This video shows the diagnosis steps Steve took to figure out the issue and resolve it. Starting with the basics, the battery was fully charged and the starter was confirmed to be turning the flywheel. Next, the OBD-II scanner was plugged in to check for codes. Even though the check engine light hadn't illuminated, six trouble codes were saved in the computer: P0404: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Range/Performance P0302: Cylinder 2 Misfire P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire P0306: Cylinder 6 Misfire P0300: Random/Multiple Misfire Since an EGR valve working improperly can cause misfires, particularly at start-up, that was the first trouble code to look into. Removing and cleaning the EGR valve was an easy but time-consuming task, but that was all it ended up needing in order to fix the starting issue. After a standard drive cycle was completed, all the trouble codes were gone. Verdict: The EGR valve was malfunctioning (most likely stuck open) and allowing exhaust gasses to enter the intake in unpredictable amounts. Cleaning the carbon out of it allowed it to function properly.
