MIT’s gas-powered drone is able to stay in the air for five days at a time.

Last month, a team of MIT engineers launched Jungle Hawk Owl from the back of a compact car. It was the first flight for the 24-foot-wide drone, which the team believes is capable of staying in the air for five days on a single tank of gas. The craft was designed to address a challenge posed by the U.S. Air Force. The teams were asked to design a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) powered by solar energy that was able to stay in the air over long periods. The idea was to design a vehicle that could help deliver communications to areas impacted by natural disasters or other emergencies. Weather balloons have traditionally been the choice, but they drift with the wind and often don’t stay in the air long enough to be really effective. Several teams at MIT’s Beaver Works lab got to work on the problem, soon abandoning the solar option. According to team co-lead, Professor Warren Hoburg, current solar technologies would require a much larger drone with a much larger surface area for panels, coupled with a large, heavy battery. Solar also runs into issues during the winter months and at latitudes far from the equator because of shortened daylight hours. “It’s true that it’s less appealing to be running on gasoline [than solar],” he tells TechCrunch. “But building the solar airplane would be a big boondoggle. With the design we chose, we’ve already had a first flight. It was easy to build compared to the other aircraft available, and the cost and fuel consumption are really low. We spent more fuel getting to the launch site than flying the airplane for three days.” The winning team designed a prototype of the drone using GPkit, a Python-based modeling tool designed by Hoburg. The final design was built out of lightweight materials like carbon fiber and Kevlar, weighing a total of 55 pounds (closer to 150 with payload and a tank full of gas). The parts can be easily dissembled and shipped to affected areas and the payload is the perfect size for carrying a shoebox-sized communication device designed by MIT’s Lincoln Labs, which helped support the project. In addition to supporting areas in the wake of a disaster, the team believes the drone could go a ways toward helping tech companies like Google and Facebook achieve their longstanding (and in one case recently abandoned) dream of delivering internet access to rural areas. But there’s still a lot of work to be done, and the school is working with the FAA for permission to keep the drone in the air for the full five days as it continues its testing over the summer.

DFMEA Explained | Automobile Engineering | BAJA / SUPRA / FSAE

This is the 8th Lesson of Automotive Engineering for Competitions under the Safety Module. The Acronym might sound scary but this is a bit simpler than it sounds. DFMEA stands for Design Failure Mode Effective Analysis. How many of you have seen a car/bike/truck getting crashed but the driver passenger still manage to escape and save his/her life. Ok, now you have also heard that the most causalities happens due to road accident. Over 2,57,000 people were killed in road accidents in 2016 alone, that is more than the number of people killed in all our wars put together. There is one death every four minutes due to a road accident in India. Automobile Companies use this DFME Analysis once their design/product is ready, to minimize the risk of failure and prepare for alternatives so that it is convenient for the people to sort out any trouble as quickly as possible. I will not go very deep into the theoretical aspects of DFMEA, for that you have internet and your college teacher. Without wasting much of your time.I will let you know how to calculate RPN No. and how to minimise RPN. So, RPN stands for Risk Priority No. which is calculated by the multiplication of Sevirity, occurance and detection. Severity stands for the overall impact your car will suffer if a component gets fail, we will discuss it in detail in the next slide. Occurance is the probablity of a certain part to get fail that is how frequent that component is getting failed. Detection is how easily you can identify failure in a component of your car. This is the slide that you need to put down in your PPT, In the first column you need to put down the names of subassemblies where chances of failures are most likely. In the second column the potential modes of failure for that particular subassembly is mentioned for example a engine will fail if there is a leakage. Then in the third column the effect of failure will be mentioned, in case of engine leakage there will be fire or the engine performance will go down due to oil leakage. Now fourth column is severity, which as we discussed in the last slide is the impact it has on your car if engine fails. Now because engine plays a vital role in a car and wit engine failure, you won't be able to drive it. So we have put a severity of 10 which is maximum and 1 is less severe. 5th column explains the mechanism which is responsible for the failure, in case of engine it is defective manufacturing and improper handling. The sixth column stands for occurance i.e. how frequent is the chances of this part getting failed is there. Measured on a scale of 1 to 5 The seventh column stands for current design which you have made and analysed using CAD and CAE to control such failure. The 8th column is the type of identification, you can make it can be either detection or prevention depending on the type of subassembly. The 9th column stands for the scale of ease under which you can identify the point of failure. In the tenth column you have to calculate the RPN as discussed above by multiplying Severity occurance and detection If RPN is greater than 10 which must be there, then in the 11th column you will mention the recommended action to decrease the scale of detection and occurance and then recalculate the RPN in the last column which should must come below or equal to 10. There are 11 steps to complete DFMEA : 1. Design Review – Use the product design drawings or documents to identify each component and its relation with other components of product 2. Brainstorm potential failure modes 3. List potential failure modes 4. List potential effects of failure modes 5. Assign the severity ranking which should be based on consequences of failure (1 to 10) (Threat to human life, accident or safety issue is scored 10) 6. Assign the occurance ranking (1 to 10) 7. Assign detection ranking based on the chance of detection prior to failure (1 to 10) (Easy for detection gets less score – 1, difficult to detect should be assigend higher score) 8. Calculate the SOD (Severity x Occurrence x Detection) number or risk priority number (RPN) 9. Develop action plan to reduce vital RPNs (Above set baseline) 10. Implement the improvements identified 11. Calculate RPN again based on improvements. Do mistake proofing.

When is the last time you heard of a place offering a meal for Rs 5 or 10, apart from Amma’s canteen in Chennai or at the Parliament house? Keeping in mind today’s inflation scenario, finding a restaurant which actually gives you a quality meal at that price is quite unimaginable. However, in Noida Sector-29, you can indeed get a plate of Dal Chawal made in desi ghee by merely paying Rs 5. Noida based social activist, Anoop Khanna along a group of likeminded individuals have started ‘Dadi ki Rasoi’ with an aim to provide meal at the lowest possible amount. “We wanted to provide quality food, which gives you a homely feel. We could have attempted to provide the food for free as well but the reason for the price is that it gives dignity to a person who is buying the lunch. As far as the quality of food is concerned, I personally supervise over the preparation. Moreover, since the cost is minimal, anyone can enjoy a meal without worrying about the cost,” Khanna says. Nearly a month after its opening, the ‘Dadi Ki Rasoi’ is already a hit in the city. Be it a rickshaw puller, a shop owner, or a passerby, people from different sections queue at the stall for lunch. For two hours every day, between 12pm-2pm, the Dadi ki Rasoi serves lunch to more than 400 people.

Mohammed Raees Mehmood Makrani a resident of Sagar, Madhya Pradesh has manufactured Water Car. In 2012, he converted his Maruti 800 into such a car that runs on water. This car can run with the maximum speed of 50-60 kilometers per hour. He also controls his car using the mobile network frequency and by pressing different numbers of mobile he starts the car engine.  Raees Khan, who works in his father's mechanic shop, had quit studies after high school. His father says that even as a child, Raees used to spend time making different gadgets and get reprimanded by him.
