What are the Types of Constrained Motion || Ekeeda.com

In kinematic pairs, constrained motion (or relative motion) can be broadly classified into three types. They are 1) Completely constrained motion 2) Incompletely constrained motion 3) Partially (or successfully) constrained motion 1. Completely constrained motion: Completely constrained motion is a type of constrained motion in which relative motion between the links of a kinematic pair occurs in a definite direction by itself, irrespective of the external forces applied. Square bar in a square hole undergoes completely constrained motion Even when any external force is applied, a square bar always slides inside a square hole. It does not turn. 2. Incompletely constrained motion: In incompletely constrained motion, the relative motion between the links depend on the direction of external forces acting on them. A good example of incompletely constrained motion is the motion of a shaft inside a circular hole. Depending on the direction of external forces applied, the shaft may slide or turn (or do both) inside the circular hole. Incompletely constrained motion is undesirable in any mechanical system. It leads to improper mechanical outputs. 3. Partially (or successfully) constrained motion: A kinematic pair is said to be partially or successfully constrained if the relative motion between its links occurs in a definite direction, not by itself, but by some other means. A good example of successfully constrained motion is piston reciprocating inside a cylinder in an internal combustion engine. Normally, when a piston is placed in a cylinder, it may undergo reciprocating motion (upward and downward motion) and turning motion, depending on the external forces applied. It is incompletely constrained. However, if the piston is connected to a connecting rod, its motion is successfully constrained i.e., it can only undergo only reciprocating motion inside the cylinder. Here, some other means (i.e., connecting rod) is used for successfully constraining the motion of the piston. It is unique for each material and is found by recording the amount of deformation (strain) at distinct intervals of tensile or compressive loading (stress). Stress–strain curves of various materials vary widely, and different tensile tests conducted on the same material yield different results, depending upon the temperature of the specimen and the speed of the loading. It is possible, however, to distinguish some common characteristics among the stress–strain curves of various groups of materials and, on this basis, to divide materials into two broad categories; namely, the ductile materials and the brittle materials. Prony Brake Dynamometer: Pony Brake is one of the simplest dynamometer for measuring power output (brake power). It is to attempt to stop the engine by means of a brake on the flywheel and measure the weight which an arm attached to the brake will support, as it tries to rotate with the flywheel. The Prony brake shown in the above consists of a wooden block, frame, rope, brake shoes and flywheel. It works on the principle of converting power into heat by dry friction. Spring-loaded bolts are provided to increase the friction by tightening the wooden block. The whole of the power absorbed is converted into heat and hence this type of dynamometer must the cooled. Internal Expanding Brake Internal expanding brakes are used almost exclusively as wheel brakes, but can be found on some cranes. This type of brake permits a more compact and economical construction. The brake shoes andbrake-operating mechanism are supported on a backingplate or brake shield attached to the vehicle axle, as shown in figure 3-40. The brake drum, attached to the rotating wheel, acts as a cover for the shoe and operating mechanism and furnishes a frictional surface for the brake shoes.The brake shoe of an internal expanding brake is forced outward against the drum to produce the braking action. One end of the shoe is hinged to the backing plate by an anchor pin, while the other end is unattached and can be moved in its support by the operating mechanism.When force from the operating mechanism is applied to the unattached end of the shoe, the shoe expands and brakes the wheel. A retracting spring returns the shoe to the original position when braking action is no longer required. Dynamometer A dynamometer or "dyno" for short, is a device for measuring force, torque, or power. For example, the power produced by an engine, motor or other rotating prime mover can be calculated by simultaneously measuring torque and rotational speed (RPM). A dynamometer can also be used to determine the torque and power required to operate a driven machine such as a pump. In that case, a motoring or driving dynamometer is used. A dynamometer that is designed to be driven is called an absorption or passive dynamometer. A dynamometer that can either drive or absorb is called a universal or active dynamometer. 1) Power Absorption Dynamometers: Power Absorption dynamometers measure and absorb the power output of the engine to which they are coupled. The power absorbed is usualy dissipated as heat by some means. Examples of power absorption dynamometers are Prony brake dynamometer, Rope brake dynamometer, Eddy current dynamometer, Hydraulic dynamometer, etc. 2) Power Transmission Dynamometers: In power transmission dynamometers the power is transmitted to the load coupled to the engine after it is indicated on some type of scale. These are also called torque meters. 3) Driving Type Dynometer A dyno that can measure torque and power delivered by the power train of a vehicle directly from the drive wheel or wheels (without removing the engine from the frame of the vehicle), is known as a chassis dyno. Dynamometers can also be classified by the type of absorption unit or absorber/driver that they use. Flywheel Flywheel is a machine member which avoids fluctuation of energy in a power plant (I. C. engine) or in reciprocating compressors & pumps. Flywheel does not maintain a constant speed but only prevents fluctuation of energy Flywheel does not have control over the supply of fuel. A flywheel is a rotating mechanical device that is used to store rotational energy. Flywheels have an inertia called the moment of inertia and thus resist changes in rotational speed. The amount of energy stored in a flywheel is proportional to the square of its rotational speed. Energy is transferred to a flywheel by the application of a torque to it, thereby increasing its rotational speed, and hence its stored energy. Conversely, a flywheel releases stored energy by applying torque to a mechanical load, thereby decreasing the flywheel's rotational speed. If only one set of gears is used, the winch crab is called a Single Purchase Winch Crab, and if two sets are used, it is called Double Purchase Winch Crab. A winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in (wind up) or let out (wind out) or otherwise adjust the ""tension"" of a rope or wire rope (also called ""cable"" or ""wire cable"") In a single purchase crab winch, a rope is fixed to the drum and is wound a few turns round it. The free end of the rope carries the load W. A large toothed wheel known as spur wheel is rigidly mounted on the load drum. Another small toothed wheel, called pinion, is geared with the spur wheel. Crab and Winch The crab and winch handle in its simplest form is a simple application of the mechanical principle of the wheel and axle, the handle representing the wheel and the crab or drum the axle. It uses the principle of proportional control. The devices shown are on steam engines. Power is supplied to the governor from the engine's output shaft by a belt or chain connected to the lower belt wheel. The governor is connected to a throttle valve that regulates the flow of working fluid (steam) supplying the prime mover. As the speed of the prime mover increases, the central spindle of the governor rotates at a faster rate and the kinetic energy of the balls increases. This allows the two masses on lever arms to move outwards and upwards against gravity. If the motion goes far enough, this motion causes the lever arms to pull down on a thrust bearing, which moves a beam linkage, which reduces the aperture of a throttle valve.
