The Offshore Energy and Storage Society (OSESS) is an international research initiative dedicated to advancing coastal/offshore energy and storage technology, policies, investments, and commercialization. The society emerged from a vision shared by researchers at the University of Windsor and the University of Nottingham. On July 12-14, 2017, researchers from 10 different countries gathered at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Cape Cod for OSESS’s fourth annual conference to examine offshore energy generation and storage technology, environmental integration and expanding global markets. OSESS 2018 takes place July 4-6 in Ningbo, China. For more information, please visit osessociety.com.

A technology platform developed by the University of Windsor Metal Casting and Post-Processing Technology Group and Department of Power Electronics from the Silesian University of Technology in Poland is helping automakers like General Motors improve vehicle performance. The Universal Metallurgical Simulator and Analyzer Technology Platform (UMSA) is used to understand the shortcomings of industrial casting and heat treatment processes. It has been used to improve the dimensional stability of aluminum engine castings stopping fluid leaks, unify mechanical properties of cast iron brake rotors throughout the cast component leading to smoother and safer vehicle braking and increase the strength of aluminum tire rims reducing vehicle weight and improving performance. The General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich. will begin utilizing the latest UMSA Technology Platform in 2017 to improve casting and heat treatment processes.
