Around 1950, perhaps consistent with the Industrial Revolution and the treatise of World War II, the term "fitness" increased in western vernacular by a factor of ten. Modern definition of fitness describe either a person or machine's ability to perform a specific function or a holistic definition of human adaptability to cope with various situations. This has led to an interrelation of human fitness and attractiveness which has mobilized global fitness and fitness equipment industries. Regarding specific function, fitness is attributed to person who possess significant aerobic or anaerobic ability, i.e. strength or endurance. A holistic definition of fitness is described by Greg Glassman in the CrossFit journal as an increased work capacity across broad times and modal domains; mastery of several attributes of fitness including strength, endurance, power, speed, balance and coordination and being able to improve the amount of work done in a given time with any of these domains. A well rounded fitness program will improve a person in all aspects of fitness, rather than one, such as only cardio/respiratory endurance or only weight training. Before the industrial revolution, fitness was defined as the capacity to carry out the day’s activities without undue fatigue. However, with automation and changes in lifestyles physical fitness is now considered a measure of the body's ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations. A comprehensive fitness program tailored to an individual typically focuses on one or more specific skills, and on age- or health-related needs such as bone health. Many sources also cite mental, social and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness. This is often presented in textbooks as a triangle made up of three points, which represent physical, emotional, and mental fitness. Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by unhealthy lifestyle or aging. Working out can also help some people sleep better and possibly alleviate some mood disorders in certain individuals. Street workout is a physical activity performed mostly in outdoor parks or public facilities. It originated in Ancient Greece, but became a popular movement in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the United States, especially in New York City's urban neighborhoods. It has now spread all over the world. It is a combination of athletics, calisthenics, and sports. Street workout is a modern name for bodyweight workouts in outdoor parks. Street workout teams and organized competitions exist. A typical street workout routine often consists of physical exercises such as pull-ups, chin-ups, push-ups, dips, muscle-ups, sit-ups and squats. Street workout also involves some static (isometric) holds such as the human flag, front lever, back lever and planche. Athletics exercising - a system of exercises with various levels of exertion provided for health strengthening, development of strength and stamina, as well as, for shaping an athletic constitution. Athletics exercising is used to increase strength level, develop physical shape and for rehabilitation. Isometric exercises - a type of strength training whereby you hold a static position. Calisthenics (Kalestenos) – is a complex of many simple exercises which are performed using purely body weight. The aim of these exercises is to train muscularity strength and to evolve comprehensive fitness. Urban Calisthenics - a form of body weight exercise performed with no or little apparatus. Individuals and/or groups train and exercise in urban areas and spaces. Advanced Urban Calisthenics skills include Muscle Up's, Typewriter pull ups and both Front and Back Levers. Street workouts are usually performed outdoor or in specifically designed street workout parks. Both my peers & personal training clients have asked me countless times how I did it, how I dealt with all the struggles related to working as a nurse, while working night shift, while having a “life” or being a spouse or etc. How did I find the time to work out, how did I keep my diet on point, how did I deal with stress at work or unhealthy temptations? Well, here is how I did it – and I hope many of you can relate to my own experiences. I have been a registered nurse for almost 9 years now. I have been in healthcare since I was 15 years old working as a secretary, a telemetry technician, a CNA, and eventually I graduated with my BSN in nursing. When I turned 21, I started working as a RN on a medical/surgical telemetry floor and fell in love with Cardiology. I went on to work on a cardiac step-down unit learning some very advanced cardiac technology and skills such as how to manage patients with L-VAD (left ventricular assisted device that does the heart pumping even if the patient is in a V-fib electrical rhythm). I cared for cardiac/cardiothoracic surgery patients for about 7 years when I decided to expand my knowledge and skillset to the RN Float position. I am ACLS/AED certified and have been for 8 of my 9 years of nursing. I have worked every shift: days, evenings and eventually settled for nights. I have worked as a charge nurse on all the units I’ve worked on including when I floated. I wanted to share my story of how my nursing career led to a lot of stress in my life and how I decided to overcome it. I wanted to improve my physical health, my energy levels, aesthetics and overall happiness. When I turned 28, I was faced with several life decisions: do I go back to school to advance my nursing career? Do I go on to start a family with my husband whom I have been married to for a year? Do I continue to work full time night shift for years to come? Do I succumb to the natural stresses and influences that my job generates? I decided my priority became my health and my physical wellbeing. I noticed all too often that the “life of a nurse” seemed to have somewhat of popular tendency: go to nursing school (where oftentimes health and stress management takes a backseat), find a job (with ANY shift or ANY floor you can find), settle down (with your significant other), advance career further (become a PA, APRN, etc) and/or start a family. This pattern generally did NOT include making health a priority for the nurse. Instead, I witnessed myself and my fellow nurses stressed, overworked, with little to no time for breaks, malnourished, working long hours on very little sleep, low energy levels and making tons of bad food decisions given the circumstances and work environment. I, myself, fell victim to all of the above and woke up one day feeling like I was on a downward spiral. I was extremely stressed, unhappy with my daily diet choices, my physical appearance and everything else you could think of. Mind you that during all of this I was still considered a very “active” and healthy person by many. I mean I had run three Spartan Races, 2 Tough Mudders, multiple 5Ks and I did CrossFit for some 3 years even partaking in a few local competitions. Even though many saw me as being strong & fit, I was far from “healthy”. Over the years I had made little to no improvements to my eating habits, stress management, sleep schedule, portion control or etc. I was simply working out to try and offset all the poor decisions I was making on the daily; and it had finally caught up with me. During the holiday season alone I gained some 12lbs. I decided I needed to make some serious lifestyle changes.

This training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extension to a contraction in a rapid or "explosive" manner, such as in specialized repeated jumping. Plyometrics are primarily used by athletes, especially martial artists, sprinters and high jumpers, to improve performance, and are used in the fitness field to a much lesser degree. Plyometrics includes explosive powerful training exercises that are trained to activate the quick response and elastic properties of the major muscles in the body. It was Initially made famous by Soviet Olympians in the 1970s, providing the core element in the strength programs of elite sporting athletes worldwide. Sports using plyometrics include basketball, tennis and volleyball as well as the various codes of football. The term "plyometrics" was coined by Fred Wilt after watching Soviet athletes prepare for their events in track and field; he felt this was a key to their success. He began a collaboration with trainer Michael Yessis of Soviet (Russia)to promote plyometrics. Since its introduction in the early 1980s, two forms of plyometrics have evolved. In the original version of plyometrics, created by Russian scientist Yuri Verkhoshansky, it was defined as the shock method. In this, the athlete would drop down from a height and experience a "shock" upon landing. This in turn would bring about a forced eccentric contraction which was then immediately switched to a concentric contraction as the athlete jumped upward. The landing and takeoff are executed in an extremely short period of time, in the range of 0.1–0.2 second. The shock method is the most effective method used by athletes to improve their speed, quickness, and power after development of a strong strength base. Rather than using the term plyometrics to indicate exercises utilizing the shock method, it may be preferable to use the term explosive or true plyometrics which can be considered the same as the plyometrics originally created by Verkhoshansky. The shock method that he created was the result of studying the actions that occur in running and jumping. He found that the landings and takeoffs in these two skills involved high ground reaction forces that were executed in an extremely quick and explosive manner. For example, time of execution of the landing and takeoff in jumping was close to 0.20 second and in sprinting it was approximately 0.10 second. Since one of the main objectives of the Soviet research was to develop practical methods of training to improve athletic performance, Verkhoshansky tackled the task of how these forces in explosive execution could be duplicated in an exercise. By doing exercises such as the depth jump, that he created, the athlete would enhance his ability in the takeoff and his resultant performance in the running or jumping event. He experimented with many different exercises, but the depth jump appeared to be the best for duplicating the forces in the landing and takeoff. The second version of plyometrics, seen to a great extent in the United States, relates to doing any form of jump regardless of execution time. Such jumps cannot be considered truly plyometric (as described by Verkhoshansky) since the intensity of execution is much lower and the time required for transitioning from the eccentric to the concentric contraction is much greater. The term plyometrics became very popular with the publication of many books on the subject matter. It now appears impossible to go back to its original meaning and method of execution. As a result, it is important to distinguish which type of "plyometric" exercise is used in order to determine its effectiveness and potential to receive the stated benefits. Though the name plyometrics is given to all jumps, not all jumps are plyometric.

She was a phenom at a young age; she broke a number of American records for high school pole vaulting. She, however, became an internet phenomenon not for her pole vaulting, but for being ridiculously good looking, when pictures of her pole vaulting in high school were widely shared. Pictures of Allison were taken by a journalist for a Californian track and field website and posted online. The images were then posted on With Leather, a sports blog with mostly a male fanbase, and her pics went viral. Michelle "Shelly" Jenneke is an Australian hurdler and model, who won a silver medal for the 100 m hurdles at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. She got super famous in 2012 for that little pre-race warm-up dance you just witnessed! In July 2012, videos of her dancing during her pre-race warmup for the 100 m hurdles race at the 2012 World Junior Championships went viral on YouTube. One clip received 19 million views and was featured on The Tonight Show. She’s not just another pretty faced athlete however, because in April 2016 she won the Australian National Championship 100 m hurdles final, which qualified her for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to make much of a splash in her first Olympics as she was unable to get out of the heats. She finished in 6th in her heat in a time of 13.26. She would have needed a near personal best to qualify as the third qualifying time in her heat was 12.85. It’s only her first Olympics so she’ll have plenty of chances to try for a medal. 10 Jacqueline Carvalho Jaqueline Carvalho is a volleyball player for the Brazilian national team and the Brazilian club Minas Tênis Clube. She’s one of the most decorated volleyball players in the world, as she’s racked up medals in a plethora of international competitions. Some of her most notable achievements include winning five golds and two silvers at the World Grand Prix, two golds at the World Grand Champions Cup, two silvers and a bronze at the World Championships, and two golds at the Olympics. Jaqueline and the rest of the Brazil squad have dominated the Olympics in recent years, winning gold medals in both 2008 and 2012. They were unable to bring home the gold in 2016, as they were knocked out by China unexpectedly. 9 McKayla Maroney Ahhh McKayla……I’m sure if you met her in real life and fed her some uninspiring pick up line, you’re gonna get her usual unimpressed face she gave on the podium after winning a Silver medal in the 2012 Olympics. McKayla was a member of the 2012 U.S. women's gymnastics team, who were known as the Fierce Five at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where her team won a gold medal in the team competition. McKayla was also a member of the gold-winning American team at the 2011 World Championships where she won gold medals in the team and vault competitions.
