Two words that are often stated in the car community, but often misunderstood. This video seeks to clarify the difference between the two, without silly analogies like "horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take it with you" (which, by the way, is highly inaccurate). Torque is a force acting at a radius, while horsepower simply incorporates time into the equation. This video will discuss the differences, how each applies to internal combustion engines, how they relate, what peak torque and peak horsepower actually mean, and how to analyze torque and horsepower curves. Finally, what's more important for acceleration, a car with lots of power, or lots of torque? Let's get technical. With the context of an engine: Power = Torque x Angular Velocity. How should you size an exhaust? What exhaust diameter is too large, or too small? What is exhaust scavenging? What is wave scavenging? Why is exhaust velocity important? Cars don't need back pressure. More specifically, internal combustion engines do not benefit from back pressure in the exhaust. Back pressure is a pressure in the opposite direction to the exhaust's flow. The goal of an exhaust is remove spent combustion gases as quickly and efficiently as possible out of the engine cylinders. Back pressure has the opposite effect, impeding exhaust flow. Exhaust velocity, and exhaust scavenging, however, are highly beneficial. This video will discuss wave scavenging, inertial scavenging, and how exhaust pipe length and diameter play a critical role in exhaust velocity and scavenging effectiveness. Gasoline Vs Diesel - 4 Major Differences. What's the difference between gasoline and diesel engines? Gasoline engines attempt to keep the compression ratio so that the air-fuel mixture does not rise above the self-ignition temperature. Diesel engines on the other hand use higher compression ratios, leading to more torque and better fuel economy. Diesel engines typically do not have throttles, and they have much larger operating air-fuel ratios. It still powers the torque monsters inside Chevy Camaros and Corvettes, as well as Dodge Chargers and Challengers. And while it's not to say that the engines aren't performance bargains, one might be curious why the redline on these engines tends to be fairly lower than their European counterparts. Again, this isn't to say that one technology is superior in every way, there are pros and cons of most engine styles. But from a curiosity standpoint, it does make one wonder why pushrod V8 engines aren't hitting 9,000 RPM in production cars, like DOHC V8's and flat-sixes. Of course, high RPM is all about engines that are tuned to breathe well at high RPM, and as the video demonstrates, that's just not what pushrod OHV engines are all about. Raise the car up onto jack stands. Remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the exhaust from the catalytic converter back. Remove the rear suspension stiffener. 3. Remove the differential side of the prop shaft, marking all the joints disconnected. 4. Pull the prop shaft slightly back, and allow it to rest on the shaft protector. 5. Disconnect the lower control arm by removing the lower ball joint. 6. Remove the ABS sensor harness by removing two bolts from the upper arm. Repeat these steps to remove the ball joint and ABS sensor for both sides of the vehicle. 7. Remove the differential joints for each side. There are six mounting bolts and nuts to remove, and then you can remove the joint from the differential. This requires pulling the half shaft away from the differential to clear the internal rod. 8. Remove the EVAP canister cover by removing the single bolt holding it in place. 9. Place a floor jack underneath the differential. A transmission jack is ideal, especially if you’re doing this by yourself, as you want to have a large platform to hold the differential. 11. Starting from the rear of the differential, remove each of the four mounting nuts from the mounting bracket. Then remove the four bolts holding the front mounts in place. 12. Hang the Evap canister out of the way of the differential. There’s a single bolt hold it on, and then a bracket to slip it off and allow it to hang freely. 13. Pull the differential towards the front of the car, which will clear the rear mounting bolts from the mounting bracket. Then lower the differential to the ground using a jack. 14. At this point, I replaced the differential mounts at this point. 15. Fill the differential with the recommended oil. 16. Put the studs into the differential. Mount the front differential bracket onto the new differential. There are four bolts used, each torqued to 47 lb-ft. 17. Using a floor jack, lift the differential back up into the vehicle, and slide it into the rear differential mount. Then install the front mounts; torque to spec. 18. With the front mounting bracket on, there are two nuts and washers that need to be installed and torqued to 47 lb-ft. 19. Replace the EVAP canister, and the single bolt holding it in. Then reinstall the canister cover, tightening the single screw to 7.2 lb-ft. 20. Install the axle half shafts to the differential. Using new hardware, install the twelve nuts and bolts to each side of the differential. 21. For each rear suspension, reinstall the ball joints by torquing the castle nut down to 51 to 58 lb-ft. Slip the cotter pin through the ball joint bolt, and then bend the cotter pin to prevent it from falling out. 22. Reinstall the ABS sensor harness by torquing the two screws to 7.2 lb-ft. 23. Install the prop shaft back to the differential. There are three spacers to be used. The six bolts needs to be torqued to 24 lb-ft. 24. Remount the exhaust, making sure all five hangers are used, and tighten the nuts to the catalytic converter to 25 lb-ft. 25. Finally, install the rear suspension stiffener. 26. Put the wheels back on and lower the car. That question seems like it should have a realistic answer based on physics. The best 4WD system, in my opinion, is the system that gives you the least likelihood of getting stuck. In nerd-speak, it's able to put down the greatest percentage of available torque. So how do you put down the greatest amount of torque? Well that requires a clever 4WD system, that's able to change based on conditions. One such change vital for off-roading is the ability to lock up differentials. What's the difference between an open and a locked differential? An open differential allows for uneven wheel speeds, but always maintains equal torque. A locked differential does the opposite, locking wheel speed together, but allowing for unequal torque distribution. Torque is sent where grip allows for the torque to be sent. The idea for Technician vs Mechanic comes from the suggestion box at EricTheCarGuy.com. jjrobs399 asked what the difference between a mechanic and technician was. It's a fair question to be sure, and one that I feel may inspire some debate. The point I try and make in this video is that yes, there are differences between the 2, however, I feel they both have a place and one is not necessarily better than the other. At least that's the way I feel about it. I also touch on the fact that technology has crept into just about every automotive system in modern vehicles, therefore on some level I think you could consider all auto mechanics 'technicians' these days. Let's face it, plenty of us 'skip' oil changes, delaying that inevitable garage bill. Can it really cause any harm to the engine? Or, like most motorists think, it'll be fine!! I was lucky enough to stumble across an engine that had been run for over 75.000km without an oil change, not even a top up, ultimately the inevitable happened....so, I made a video highlighting all the damage caused by extending oil changes, sure this is a bit of an extreme example but I'm hoping it get's the point across! First the piston pulls in air and fuel as it moves downward, then it compresses that air and fuel as the piston moves upward. A spark plug fires, igniting the air/fuel mixture and forcing the piston downward. Finally the piston pushes out the exhaust gases on its way back up, before for the cycle repeats itself. In a V8 engine, this cycle is happening in 8 different cylinders, at different times. Instead of multiple cylinders firing at the same time, you want them to be spread out so that power delivery is smooth. For this Chevy V8, the firing or is 1, 8, 7, 2, 6, 5, 4, 3. With 8 cylinders, there is a cylinder firing for every 90 degrees of the crankshaft rotating, which means at any point in time, there are two cylinders on the power stroke. With regards to the valvetrain, the intake air comes from the top of the engine, and into the sides of the cylinder head. The exhaust flows to the sides of the engine, exiting the exhaust valves from the cylinder head. In this LS3 model, there is a single intake valve and a single exhaust valve, though it’s also common to see engines with two intake valves and two exhaust valves. The larger valve is the intake valve, and the smaller valve is the exhaust valve. The pushrod valvetrain gets its name from the metal pushrods which activate the rocker arms which open up the valves. The camshaft, located in the center of the V, has lobes on it which push the push rods up, opening the appropriate valves. For a full explanation of V8 engines, check out the video! The engine lived on until 1953, until being finally replaced in 1954. What was so special about the flathead V8? Mostly the simplicity of the design. Instead of complicated cylinder heads, they were now simply a single piece of relatively flat metal (flat head). This drove the cost of the engine down, allowing it to be built and sold on a larger scale. The challenge, however, is that the engine suffered from poor airflow, especially at high RPM. In this video we'll discuss the valvetrain, and how the flathead design impedes airflow for high revving, high power engines. Not only was airflow a challenge, but the compression ratio was difficult to increase without further restrictions on airflow. Ultimately, improved technologies replaced the flathead in 1954.
