How I Made My Own iPhone - in China

23:49
I built a like-new(but really refurbished) iPhone 6S 16GB entirely from parts I bought in the public cell phone parts markets in Huaqiangbei. And it works! How much did it cost? Answer here: https://youtu.be/-KucQDXnKws I've been fascinated by the cell phone parts markets in Shenzhen, China for a while. I'd walked through them a bunch of times, but I still didn't understand basic things, like how they were organized or who was buying all these parts and what they were doing with them. So when someone mentioned they wondered if you could build a working smartphone from parts in the markets, I jumped at the chance to really dive in and understand how everything works. Well, I sat on it for nine months, and then I dove in. More details at: https://strangeparts.com/how-i-made-my-own-iphone-in-china/ My Gear: I shot it on this camera: http://amzn.to/2B0Snke And also with this: http://amzn.to/2BhdF1e And recorded sound on this: http://amzn.to/2CFuyPv Facebook: http://facebook.com/strangepartscom Twitter: http://twitter.com/strangepartscom Instagram: http://instagram.com/strangeparts_com Email Newsletter: http://strangeparts.com/ Special thanks to everyone that helped:Ian Lesnet (dangerousprototypes.com), Jin Lin (dangerousprototypes.com and flylin.co), Helen, Frank, David, Wyman from G-Lon Cell Phone Repair School (facebook.com/wyman.liu.1), Charles Pax (paxinstruments.com), Patrick O'Doherty, Matt Turzo, Richard Littauer, the EFF, Bunnie Huang (bunniestudios.com), Sean Cross (xobs.io), all the rest of my friends in China that have been supportive, and most importantly all the Huaqiangbei market sellers that were so generous with their time and advice!

Technology is a WOMAN'S game in CHINA!

10:52
You'll see young women coding, soldering and selling all sorts of technology in the tech markets of Mainland China, this is very different to the traditionally male dominated tech industry in the west. That isn't to say that women are not in the minority here, but they're a big part of the technology game, especially in China's silicon valley of hardware, Shenzhen. I meet up and speak to the most famous female Maker and Coder Naomi "SexyCyborg" Wu and we go for an adventure around China's biggest technology market. Come and join us to find out how women are holding up half the sky in the Chinese technology sector. She first came to public prominence on Reddit, where she has mostly male followers, and she maintains active Reddit and Twitter accounts under the noms de plume of SexyCyborg and RealSexyCyborg, respectively, as an internet personality. Professionally she is a web developer, coding in Ruby on Rails and JavaScript under a masculine pseudonym for overseas clients both for safety's sake and to preclude gender discrimination; she also reviews electronics. She regards "Chinese gadgets" as good as or better than foreign, and on International Women's Day 2017 she was listed as one of the 43 most influential women in 3D printing, a male-dominated field, by 3D Printer & 3D Printing News. ⚫ Watch Conquering Southern China (my documentary) and see China like no one outside of China has ever seen it before: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/conqueringsouthernchina ⚫ Support me on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/serpentza Join me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/winstoninchina Twitter: @serpentza Instagram: serpent_za My other channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/advchina Music used: Virtual Vice - Sanctuary Runner Artist's bandcamp: https://new-world.bandcamp.com/album/off-duty

Chinese Brands that DON'T SUCK!

17:47
"Made in China" usually means that it's not going to last or that the build quality can be expected to be sub-par or poor. However there are companies in China that are starting to break that stereotype! Come with me to China's Silicon Valley and see some of China's home-grown brands that are shaking off the image that "Made in China" means "Junk". Huaqiangbei (Chinese: 华强北; pinyin: Huáqiángběi; literally: "Huaqiang North") is an area and subdistrict of Futian, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. The area's status as a major electronics manufacturing hub, and sprawling electronics marketplaces have earned it (and Shenzhen) occidental nicknames such as "China's Silicon Valley", and the "Silicon Valley of Hardware". The subdistrict runs from Shennan Road at SEG Plaza near Huaqiang Road Station of the Shenzhen Metro for 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north to the Pavilion Hotel. It is at the spine of a shopping district, with cross streets Zhenzhong Road (振中路), Zhenhua Road (振华路) and Zhenxing Road (振兴路). Huafa Road (华发路) is immediately parallel to the east with Yannan Road (燕南路) further away. The central area of the district is along Huaqiang Road (华强路), a busy pedestrian street which the district is named after. The area is characterized by tree-lined streets with wide (5 to 20 metres (16 to 66 ft)) footpaths. Huaqiangbei is famous for its variety of electronics and clothing shops, though it has a notorious history of selling counterfeit and smuggled goods ⚫ Watch Conquering Southern China (my documentary) and see China like no one outside of China has ever seen it before: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/conqueringsouthernchina ⚫ Support me on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/serpentza Join me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/winstoninchina Twitter: @serpentza Instagram: serpent_za My other channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/advchina Music used: Virtual Vice - Kowloon City 2100 Artist's bandcamp: https://virtual-vice.bandcamp.com/releases

Are Chinese CARS Getting GOOD? Or still CRAP!?

11:17
It's a serious question! A lot has changed in the Chinese Automotive industry since I bought my Chinese car 8 years ago, come and find out if Chinese cars can now stand up to their international competition. The automotive industry in China has been the largest in the world measured by automobile unit production since 2008. Since 2009, annual production of automobiles in China exceeds that of the European Union or that of the United States and Japan combined. The traditional "Big Four" domestic car manufacturers are SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW and Chang’an. Other Chinese car manufacturers are Beijing Automotive Group, Brilliance Automotive, BYD, Chery, Geely, Jianghuai (JAC), Great Wall, and Guangzhou Automobile Group. In addition, several multinational manufacturers have partnerships with domestic manufacturers. While most of the cars manufactured in China are sold within China, exports reached 814,300 units in 2011. China's home market provides its automakers a solid base and Chinese economic planners hope to build globally competitive auto companies that will become more and more attractive and reliable over the years. China's automobile industry had mainly Soviet origins (plants and licensed auto design were founded in the 1950s, with the help of the USSR) and had small volumes for the first 30 years of the republic, not exceeding 100–200 thousands per year. Since the early 1990s, it has developed rapidly. China's annual automobile production capacity first exceeded one million in 1992. By 2000, China was producing over two million vehicles. After China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the development of the automobile market accelerated further. Between 2002 and 2007, China's national automobile market grew by an average 21 percent, or one million vehicles year-on-year. In 2009, China produced 13.79 million automobiles, of which 8 million were passenger cars and 3.41 million were commercial vehicles and surpassed the United States as the world's largest automobile producer by volume. In 2010, both sales and production topped 18 million units, with 13.76 million passenger cars delivered, in each case the largest by any nation in history. In 2014, total vehicle production in China reached 23.720 million, accounting for 26% of global automotive production. The number of registered cars, buses, vans, and trucks on the road in China reached 62 million in 2009, and is expected to exceed 200 million by 2020. The consultancy McKinsey & Company estimates that China's car market will grow tenfold between 2005 and 2030. The main industry group for the Chinese automotive industry is the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (中国汽车工业协会).

Why China is NOT the Safest Country in the World!

12:25
Hey Laowinners! China has always been a relatively safe country. But how have things changed? Is China dangerous? Is it a safe country? For the most part, I would say that things are getting safer and safer for people here. This rule of law manifesting itself is probably a good thing, and I hope it keeps this trajectory. How I Upgraded My iPhone Memory 800% - in Shenzhen, China

31:01
This is my journey in Shenzhen, China to learn how to upgrade the memory in my iPhone 6s from 16GB to 128GB. I've been hearing for several years that this was something the repair shops here in Huaqiangbei could do, and I'd even seen one do it to a friends phone, so naturally, I had to learn how to do it myself. INSANE Chinese Street Food in Canton, China | BEST Street Food in China + RARE Chinese Sashimi!

22:41
Chinese Street Food is some of the best in the world, and we traveled to Shunde, China, to taste some of the most INSANE street food in China! I (Trevor James, The Food Ranger) am taking you on a huge Chinese street food tour of Shunde, China! First, we traveled from Guangzhou, China, to Shunde, in Guangdong procince, also known as Canton, specifically to eat amazing cantonese food, and found a ton of amazing Chinese street food to try, like Chinese sashimi, roast goose, and charsui bbq pork! We even ate a snake! First, we started by tasting the world famous cantonese roast goose, baked in a charcoal oven and covered in amazing goose drippings sauce, an amazing Chinese street food you must try! Then, we went to try another famous Chinese street food, the Shuangpinai double skinned milk, served to you in the alleyways and street markets of Guangdong. It was sweet, and almost like an egg pudding. Then we went to have another specialty Chinese street food, the guilinggao bitter jelly pudding, and a douhua silken tofu dish, on our way to a huge Chinese feast. For our final meal, we visited a famous Shunde restaurant and got into the back kitchen to see the chefs preparing their world famous cantonese recipes. We ordered some extreme Chinese street food dishes, like Chinese sashimi, a grass carp which was cut open and served to us within minutes, a steamed snake and snake eggs, fried cicadas, and a lot more, so make sure to watch the whole video to discover along with us a ton of amazing Chinese street foods! China blocked SKYPE and NOBODY CARES!

06:53
Skype has just been removed from the app stores here and now is part of the long list of apps and websites blocked by the Great Firewall of China (Golden Shield Project) Internet censorship in China is extreme due to a wide variety of laws and administrative regulations. More than sixty Internet regulations have been created by the government of China, which have been implemented by provincial branches of state-owned ISPs, companies, and organizations. The apparatus of China's Internet control is considered more extensive and more advanced than in any other country in the world. The governmental authorities not only block website content but also monitor the Internet access of individuals;[4] such measures have attracted the derisive nickname "The Great Firewall of China." Amnesty International notes that China "has the largest recorded number of imprisoned journalists and cyber-dissidents in the world" and Paris-based Reporters Without Borders stated in 2010 and 2012 that "China is the world's biggest prison for netizens." The offences of which they are accused include communicating with groups abroad, signing online petitions, and calling for reform and an end to corruption. The escalation of the government's effort to neutralize critical online opinion and organizing comes after a series of large, anti-pollution, anti-corruption protests, and ethnic riots, many of which were organized or publicized using instant messaging services, chat rooms, and text messages. The size of the Chinese Internet police force was reported by the state government to be 2 million in 2013. Carrie Gracie wrote that local Chinese businesses such as Baidu, Tencent, and Alibaba, some of the world's largest internet enterprises, benefited from the way China has blocked international rivals from the market, encouraging domestic competition. Since May 2015, Chinese Wikipedia has been blocked in China. This was done after Wikipedia started to use HTTPS encryption which made selective censorship impossible or more difficult. 11 Survival Tips from a Former Secret Agent

11:36
A former secret agent is sharing his advice on how to get through any critical situation. It's always fascinating to see how easily CIA agents in movies can survive any extreme situation. Well, they’re even cooler and more resilient in real life. So even if you're the safest driver ever, it wouldn’t hurt to know what to do in case of an accident. When you’re driving, you should keep your hands at 9-and-3, not 10-and-2 as they used to say. Unfortunately, dog attacks are also quite common these days. A mixture of water and ammonia, using a can of pressurized air, like those sprayable air dusters for cleaning keyboards or pepper spray or another animal’s urine will save you. If you ever find yourself in a burning building, there's a chance that you'll need to knock the door down to escape or help others. The way you see it done in the movies couldn't be more wrong! Running towards it and throwing your whole body against it can leave you with a dislocated shoulder or even broken bones. In the moment, panic often takes over, but try to suppress it and follow some important rules. To protect yourself during a shooting, you need to find a good cover. If you’ve got a gun pointed at you, it's best to behave extremely carefully to minimize any possible risks of getting seriously hurt. If a serious explosion is about to go off, your actions should be quick and precise. Finding refuge is the most important thing. In case you get locked in the trunk of a car, you can try to open the trunk's lock latch. Another option is to try to escape through the folding back seat. If the snow on the ground is really thick and you see a couple of evergreen trees nearby, then you’ve found the perfect place to build yourself a refuge to wait out the storm and warm up a bit. Music: Barge Gunnar Olsen Sci-Fi Swamp Chase - Sir Cubworth TIMESTAMPS A car crash 0:46 A dog attack 1:50 Knocking the door down in case of fire 2:50 Barricading a door 3:37 A shooting 4:23 Being at gunpoint 5:19 An explosion 6:12 Being locked in the trunk of a car 6:50 If your hands and feet are tied together 7:37 Being in water with your hands and feet tied 8:21 Making a shelter in deep snow 9:11 Bonus: secret agent must-haves 10:10 SUMMARY -When you’re driving, you should keep your hands at 9-and-3, not 10-and-2 as they used to say. If you’re a passenger in the back seat, during a collision, put your hands on the back of your head, press your forehead against the seat in front of you, and keep your knees bent at a 90° angle. -A mixture of water and ammonia is one of the best ways to scare away aggressive dogs. The most effective choice is pepper spray or another animal’s urine. -A precise and powerful enough kick with your heel will knock out any lock. -You can put rubber doorstops all around the door’s crevices or do it like in the movies: just put a bunch of heavy objects in front of the door. -To protect yourself during a shooting, you need to find a good cover. Remember that things like clipboards and hardcover books can stop bullets, so you can use them as a bulletproof vest. -If somebody is pointing a gun at your back and has ordered you to walk ahead, raise your arms and slow down so that the gun is pressed right up against your back. Then, turn around quickly, bring one arm down so that it traps the gun under your armpit, and use your other arm to attack the gunman. -Finding refuge is the most important thing. Cross your legs, open your mouth, and cover your ears with your hands. -Find the emergency pull located on the inside of the trunk, and the trunk will pop open. -To free your legs, stand up straight and point your toes out to make a “V” with your feet. Then, jump up and as you land, spread your knees really fast. If your hands are tied behind your back, you need to get them in front of you. Once that's done, press them together tightly and then quickly pull them apart. -Don't panic, take deep breaths in and quick breaths out. If you're swimming on your belly, move by bending your knees, straightening them back again, and keeping your back arched so that your head stays above water. -Find the thickest evergreen tree with low hanging branches and dig a hole in the snow along the tree trunk. Then pack the snow on the “walls” of your hideaway as densely as you can. -Some of the most popular contents in special agents' bags include a key to handcuffs, a flashlight, a gun, a pen, a compass, a razor blade, a pocket knife, a mouthguard, and some lockpicks. You'd be wrong. China is changing, and sometimes too fast. So Winston and I delve into something that we find a little disappointing sometimes, and that is the lack of maintanence in China. If you go to most old areas, you can almost see the history pouring out from the ancient buildings and temples, but they are almost never maintained. This problem is to the point where we are having a difficult time finding anything that is more than 50 years old, simply because it is all collapsed. This isn't limited to old things either. Chinese people have had an issue with maintenance with most things for a long time. Hop on and find out more! Living in China for so long, we would like to share some of the comparisons that we have found between China and the west, and shed some light on the situation. Is it fair for the West to criticize China's human rights record?

04:38
China’s approach to human rights is often criticized by overseas observers. Scholar Zhang Weiwei argues that not all human rights can be achieved simultaneously, and by concentrating on poverty reduction China has changed the lives of 700 million people since the 1980s. China - world power again | DW Documentary

27:56
China is on its way to becoming a socialist world power. After a time of revolution and reform, the country is entering a new era. As President Xi Jinping forges the path forward, a question remains: will the Chinese people continue to support him? At the Chinese Communist Party’s convention in fall of 2017, President Xi Jinping sent a clear message to the world: China is entering a new era. Many believe President Xi Jinping has brought the party back on track and has secured the support of the Chinese people. Speaking to delegates in October, Xi said it was time for the nation to be a global leader that could set an example on economic, political and environmental matters. Part of his plan for economic growth is Made in China 2025, an initiative that draws from Germany’s Industry 4.0 plan and aims to make advancements across many industries, including automotive, aircraft, pharmaceutical, and artificial intelligence. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Why does Australia FEAR China? - VisualPolitik EN

13:52
It has been 45 years since China and Australia established diplomatic relations. Throughout this time, both countries have established one of the most fruitful, controversial and interesting relationships in the entire planet. Economic relations are very important for Australia: today China is by far its largest trading partner; 1 out of every 20 inhabitants of this country belongs to the Chinese community and both its universities and beaches are packed with students and tourists from the Asian giant. Thanks partly to all this, Australians have not experienced a crisis in almost 30 years. However, these growing ties clash with Washington’s interests, and in 2017 the Australian government decided once and for all to take sides. Since then, a diplomatic storm has been unleashed and Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has not refrained from blaming the Chinese intelligence services for wanting to corrupt Australian politics and society. In this video we’ll tell you what’s happening in this particular cold war, that is beginning to emerge between China and the United States. Sony's Clever but Flawed PlayStation Copy Protection--And How They Might Have Fixed It

You can support this channel on Patreon! Link below The original PlayStation is a pretty neat thing. Using the CD as a storage medium was a smart move. But, Sony needed to add anti-piracy features to the disc to prevent miscreants from making bootleg copies of Crash Bandicoot. This video tells the story of how that works, why it wasn’t infallible, and also proposes a potentially impervious solution (24 years late, though). Here’s that paper on reading optical discs. 10 Common Slavery Myths

14:50
There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the institution of slavery, especially here in the United States. These myths often serve pernicious political purposes that can be highly detrimental to a proper conception of history. So here are 10 of those myths debunked in no particular order. For general reference and mistakes: -I'm tired of all the racism in the comments, so they are now disabled - if you have a comment, here is a comment response video: https://youtu.be/Rzs62Y0qJ0o 1 - one example of white slavery I could have mentioned were the Amerindian slavers of Tans-Mississippi West, who would raid Spanish/Mexican colonies and visa/versa - but that is way too complicated for this myth. 2 - 3:20 - my bad, 1922 was the fall of the Ottoman Empire, 1918 was the end of WWI 5 - 7:10 - "any power not expressed" (the not is kind of difficult to hear) 7 - 8:30 - typo, Marx was born in 1818 not 1918, LOL ------------------------------------------------------------ references: Good general books: Ira Berlin, _Generations of Captivity_ (MA: Harvard University Press, 2003).
