With the announcement of its latest flagship handset, Huawei has shed the Ascend moniker, choosing instead to go with a direct approach by merely naming it the P8. From the looks of it, Huawei has been cognizant to improve the P8 in several key areas, like its specs and design, allowing it to keep pace with what the competition has announced thus far... -------- PhoneArena.com is your ultimate source of mobile tech news, reviews, and info. Lisa Gade reviews the Huawei P8 lite, an affordable GSM unlocked Android smartphone for the US market that sells for $249 full retail unlocked. The P8 lite is very slim at 0.3” and it weighs 4.76 ounces. It has dual SIM card slots and it supports 4G LTE on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US (along with smaller GSM carriers that piggyback off those networks). It is not compatible with Sprint or Verizon since those carriers use CDMA rather than GSM. The phone has a 5” LTPS 1280 x 720 display with Gorilla Glass 3, a 2200 mAh battery that’s sealed inside and single band WiFi 802.11n plus Bluetooth 4.0. It runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Huawei’s EMUI 3.0 UI on the 1.5 GHz Snapdragon 615 with Adreno 405 graphics. It has a 5MP front camera and 13MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording.

Samsung′s latest Galaxy S-6 has received relatively good reviews globally... after it was unveiled ahead of this year′s Mobile World Congress in Spain. But will it be enough to cement Samsung′s position as one of the premier players in the market? Arirang′s Song Ji-sun filed this report from Barcelona. Samsung′s distinctive blue and white flags welcomed more than 90-thousand visitors to the Korean company′s booth at this year′s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "And this year, the spotlight was on Samsung′s latest Galaxy S6 smartphone models." With its slimmer design and wireless charging system,... the unique look and feel of the phone was what captivated crowds the most. "I noticed that it felt different. It′s not like the previous Galaxy S smartphones because Samsung has done a great job with the design of the phone. When making the front and back sides of glass, and putting this great metal frame, this very sturdy frame around the device, it′s durable yet it looks amazing." While the Galaxy S6 was grabbing the most attention,... a market follower wanted Samsung′s spectators to drop by its booth too. Just across from Samsung sits Huawei the world′s fourth largest handset maker. As the event′s official sponsor, Huawei had the most floorspace... and the Chinese company didn′t waste an inch of it, displaying everything from handsets to Internet of Things devices... such as CarFi,... setting up a WiFi environment in a moving car. "We are happy to see our friends from everywhere visit our booth, have a discussion. Huawei benefits from that and Huawei wants to share with all the friend, what we have in our R&D and plans for our future roadmap." Huawei also unveiled its first smartwatch, and while its features are not as advanced as those offered by its Korean rivals, the company is expected to gain ground quickly... as 13 percent of its annual revenue is pumped back into R&D. That′s double the six percent Samsung has set aside for R&D over the past two years. Market watchers say Korean manufacturers like Samsung and LG are going to have to up their game... if they want to stay at the peak of the global market. Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

Here's the world's most powerful smartphone, running an Octa-core Hisilicon Kirin950 quad ARM Cortex-A72 and quad ARM Cortex-A53 in big.LITTLE configuration with the ARM Mali-T880 GPU on TSMC 16nm FinFET+ node and also an ARM Cortex-M7 for the sensor hub. With a 1080p 6" display with 2.5D "elevation", 4000mAh battery, dual-SIM LTE Cat-6, 32GB/64GB/128GB storage and 3GB/4GB RAM. Now for sale in China starting at $470 for 3GB RAM and 32GB Flash to $570 for 4GB RAM and 64GB Flash. So for about the same price as a Nexus 6P 64GB you get more RAM, more CPU, more GPU (possibly, I didn't check performance configuration benchmarks), dual-SIM slots, MicroSD card support (you have to choose between MicroSD or the second SIM card in the same slot as far as I understand) also I hear that maybe that the 4GB/64GB version and above have worldwide LTE/HSPA+ bands and are not limited to either European/Asian or US bands (to be confirmed?) possibly that the Camera optics are the same from Sony as in the Nexus 6P, though it records only 1080p video and not 4K and the display is only a 1080p and not 2K. The battery life, usability benchmarks, connectivity speed is to be tested. This might be the best smartphone in the world today. Rumors are that Huawei plans to manufacture at least 1 Million units per month, they plan to overtake the Huawei Mate 7 sales amount that was over 7 million units over the previous year. I think that if Huawei wants to sell 70 million units of this one, they can do it if they price it $100 or $200 lower and make it available everywhere where people demand to buy it. I think that Huawei should use Google Now Nexus Style launcher as default and full Google designed UI instead of EMUI. I wonder if video output such as MHL works to use the powerful processor with an external Laptop Dock or Desktop Dock and I wish that using MicroSD and Dual-sim at the same time was possible. USB Type-C would have been more interesting.

China's smartphone market appears to be saturated. Shipments in the country fell 4.3% in the first quarter compared with the year-ago quarter. The news comes from a new survey released today by IDC. The firm says the slowdown was caused by the shrinking of the first-time buyers market. Nearly everyone in China who wants a phone already has one. IDC also reported that Apple has the highest market share in China at 15%, followed by China's own Xiaomi and Huawei. Samsung's marketshare has been cut in half, and the company is now the #4 handset seller in China. For the full episode, go to http://twit.tv/tnt/1256

Newest numbers from China confirm that Huawei, and not Xiaomi is the number one phone maker in China (with regards to smartphone volume). The analysis comes from China-based firm Canalys which claims that Huawei has trumped Xiaomi in the race for the numero uno phone maker in the world’s largest smartphone market of China. Both Huawei and Xiaomi have had a gala time in 2015 so far, with most phones from both brands being a hit in China and elsewhere. Huawei has a much stronger international presence than Xiaomi, as you might already be aware. The exact sales figures haven’t been obtained as yet, and are numbers for the third quarter for this year, i.e., Q3 2015. Huawei has tasted success with its new Honor 7 smartphone, while Xiaomi has had to make a comeback with the Redmi Note 2 after the Mi 4i failed to grab the market share the company would’ve hoped for. With the new Mi 4c now on sale, Xiaomi will hope to grab lost ground.

Full review at www.redferret.net . The Huawei Mate S comes in a couple of models, one with dual SIM and one with a microSD card facility. We tried out the latter, which can take up to a 128GB memory card in the SIM slot to add to the onboard storage. Our test unit also didn't have the touch sensitive screen, but even so we were very impressed with the handset overall. The specs of the phone are not shabby. We're talking a 5.5 AMOLED screen, Kirin 935 2.2GHz 64bit octa-core processor, Android 5.1, 3 GB RAM, 32GB ROM, LTE/4G, 13 megapixel rear camera with OIS (optical image stabilisation) and a 2700 mAh battery. All housed in a gorgeous 7.2mm slim form factor. The phone features the usual Huawei EMUI user interface layered on top of Android, which comes with a bunch of cool and unusual stuff. As always, purists will probably hate the fact that Android has been polluted like this, but as Samsung has proved, custom interfaces build product loyalty, which is a good thing from a repeat sales viewpoint. Chief among the innovative features of the phone is the 'Smart Fingerprint Reader', which doesn't just do service as a biometric security device to lock your phone, but also gives you some navigation skills. You can use it to swipe through photos and pull down the notification screen, which are useful tasks which happen a lot. Especially valuable for one handed operation. We also especially liked the flexibility of the camera in Pro Mode, which lets you manually change things like exposure, ISO and other DSLR type functions, to get the perfect shot. And the scenes featuring light painting looked like they could really be fun. We're including some sample images at the bottom to check out, but overall the camera was impressive. Conclusion The Huawei Mate S is a great entrant to the Tier 2 phone market. We would say it's probably one of the most beautiful phones on the market at the moment, and there are no compromises in the specifications either, which makes it a real bargain for those looking for an Android smartphone replacement. It may not have the brand credibility of Sony, but in all other departments it's a worthy rival in every way. Price: £399.99 SIM Free / $637.00 SIM Free

Huawei Edges Past Microsoft to Become Third Largest Mobile Phone Vendor Microsoft, ever since the acquisition of Nokia, has launched some budget and mid-range Lumia smartphones, apart from some feature phones under the Nokia brand. Unfortunately, none of them were able to generate enough hype among users. This lacklustre performance of the company has led to its slip by one rank in the latest global mobile phone market figures - which include both smartphones and mobile phones. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, Microsoft has lost one spot to Huawei in the mobile phone market in Q2 of this year, promoting the latter to the third position after Samsung and Apple. says that while Microsoft shipped 27.8 million mobile phone units in Q2 this year, Huawei shipped 30.6 million units. Percentage-wise, Microsoft captured 6.4 percent of the market, whereas Huawei got 7 percent of the market share. To bring this in reference, in the same quarter last year, Microsoft shipped nearly double the mobile phone units - 50.3 million (11.8 percent), while Huawei shipped 20.6 million units (4.8 percent).opped the list at first and second ranks respectively. While Samsung shipped 89 million units gaining 20.5 percent market share, Apple sold 47.5 million units gaining 10 percent share in Q2 2015. As compared to Q2 last year, Samsung shipped 95.3 million units (22.3 percent), Apple shipped 35.2 million units (8.2 percent). On fifth positionHuawei shipped 30.6 million mobile phones and captured a record 7 percent market share worldwide in Q2 2015 ising fast in all regions of the world, particularly China where its 4G models, such as the Mate7, are proving wildly popular. Huawei has finally overtaken Microsoft to become the world's third largest mobile phone vendor for the first time ever," said Ken Hyers, Director at Strategy Analytics, in the report. While Microsoft has not fared well in the market this quarter, its new Windows 10 Mobile might help spur it to recapture market share. Microsoft would be releasing its Windows 10 Mobile later this year, and is tipped to launch it by November

Korea′s Samsung Electronics continues to dominate the global smartphone market despite its slowing sales. According to the latest data from market researcher，... International Data Corporation， smartphone manufacturers shipped a total of three－hundred－37－point－two million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter this year，... up eleven－point－six percent from the same period last year. The figure represents the second highest quarterly total on record. By company， Samsung Electronics led the market with shipments of 73 million units， followed by Apple， Huawei， Xiaomi and Lenovo.
