Lisa Gade reviews the Huawei P8 lite, an affordable GSM unlocked Android smartphone for the US market that sells for $249 full retail unlocked. The P8 lite is very slim at 0.3” and it weighs 4.76 ounces. It has dual SIM card slots and it supports 4G LTE on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US (along with smaller GSM carriers that piggyback off those networks). It is not compatible with Sprint or Verizon since those carriers use CDMA rather than GSM. The phone has a 5” LTPS 1280 x 720 display with Gorilla Glass 3, a 2200 mAh battery that’s sealed inside and single band WiFi 802.11n plus Bluetooth 4.0. It runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Huawei’s EMUI 3.0 UI on the 1.5 GHz Snapdragon 615 with Adreno 405 graphics. It has a 5MP front camera and 13MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording.

Huawei claim to have made the "lightest and narrowest 7-inch tablet" on the market today. This new MediaPad X1 weighs 239 grams and measures 103.9 millimetres wide and just 7.8 millimetres thick. "Huawei X1 is our premium line tablet, it has a 13 mega-pixels camera, it has a 7-inch display, it is thinnest tablet in the world, it is 7.18 millimetres," says Laimonas Petruseviius, Huawei Customer Relations. "It covers 80 percent of the body and on the rest 20 percent goes for the frame." he adds. The X1 has a screen resolution of 1200x1920 pixels. The power for this skinny tablet is provided by a 1.6Ghz quad-core processor, its 16GB memory can be increased to 32GB with the addition of a micro SD card. The basic model is powered by a large 5,000 mAh battery, which the manufacturers claim should give three and a half days normal use. What's putting some show visitors off is that this new tablet runs an older version of Android - the 4.2 Jelly Bean. "The fun factor is interesting," says Guillaume Fercken, the creator of tech website We are Mobians. "But I don't know what to do with it. It's too small to be a real tablet, it's definitely too big to be a phone for me. So, I don't even know how it's market, if it's a phablet, a tablet, a smartphone." Huawei's MediaPad X1 will retail for 550 euros ($754 USD) when it hits shops around August 2014. Barcelona's Mobile World Congress runs from 24-27 February 2014. Barcelona - 27 February 2013 1. SOUNDBITE: (English), Sascha Pallenberg, Techwriter for Mobilegeeks "Companies like Huawei and ZTE, the huge Chinese OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer). They are still not so well know in the Northern American or Western European market but they are huge in China and they are building fantastic devices whether it's a smartphones or tablets They have their own chips and they are producing everything in-house. They are capable of doing this." Barcelona - 26 February 2013 2. People trying out Huawei phones (soundbite from shot 1 continues) 3. Huawei sign Barcelona - 27 February 2013 4. SOUNDBITE: (English), Sascha Pallenberg, Techwriter for Mobilegeeks: "As I said, well known in China, selling millions and millions and they want to have a piece of the market share in Europe and North America right now. And, if you are delivering an amazingly built product. What they do, in combination with the price which is almost 30 percent of the other companies like Sony, Motorola, LG, Samsung whatever." 6. SOUNDBITE: (English), Sascha Pallenberg, Techwriter for Mobilegeeks "You know what? You are going to be successful in Europe. It doesn't matter if you have an iPhone of if you have a Nokia Lumia or if you have a Huawei. They are coming from China anyway. They are getting produced by the same machines, by the same workers and the same engineers are thinking about the production process. So, it just doesn't matter." Barcelona - 26 February 2013 7. SOUNDBITE: (English), Sascha Pallenberg, Techwriter for Mobilegeeks "2013 is a transition year for the mobile industry. We have been waiting for new chips, new faster chips right now. We are waiting for new display technologies to come to the market. We are going to see new display technology. I'm thinking about flexible displays. They will be there. So we will see some amazing new devices where we will see the display going around the edge of the device. So, as soon as you are closing the lid of a case you will still get your messages and you can still read them on the side of your handset or your smartphone tablet." Barcelona - 25 February 2013 12. SOUNDBITE: (English), Sascha Pallenberg, Techwriter for Mobilegeeks "So in 2014, my prediction would be; display technology will evolve a lot. This also will mean that battery technology, which is kind of struggling over the last couple of year, with displays using lower power consumption, right, we are going to get longer battery life out of a smartphone. Plus, on top of it audio. Audio is going to be the next big thing for the mobile market. Its been neglected for so many years. Sound is so important to our lives right. We have to have the combination between the picture, the image and the sound, right. Because then you have this real illusion, this augmented reality, that we need to also see new developments for applications, for games, for music applications for example." I'm asking this question of Samsung should be worried? As their hold on the Android smart phones dwindles down, other smaller players are popping up. ASUS, ZTE, OPPO and Huawei. These companies are small in the US but have deep pockets and are willing to spend it. ~~~~ What did I use to make this video?: Want to be a tech reviewer? Korea′s Samsung Electronics continues to dominate the global smartphone market despite its slowing sales. According to the latest data from market researcher，... International Data Corporation， smartphone manufacturers shipped a total of three－hundred－37－point－two million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter this year，... up eleven－point－six percent from the same period last year. The figure represents the second highest quarterly total on record. By company， Samsung Electronics led the market with shipments of 73 million units， followed by Apple， Huawei， Xiaomi and Lenovo. That said， the Samsung was the only one out of the top five to see its shipments decrease. They slipped two－point－three percent from last year. IDC attributes Samsung′s losses to limited supplies of its new Galaxy S6 Edge model.
