As you will see in this article, more than 300 retailers have already filed for bankruptcy in 2017, and it is being projected that a staggering 8,640 stores will close in America by the end of this calendar year. That would shatter the old record by more than 20 percent. Sadly, our ongoing retail apocalypse appears to only be in the early chapters. One report recently estimated that up to 25 percent of all shopping malls in the country could shut down by 2022 due to the current woes of the retail industry. And if the new financial crisis that is already hitting Europe starts spreading over here, the numbers that I just shared with you could ultimately turn out to be a whole lot worse. I knew that a lot of retailers were filing for bankruptcy, but I had no idea that the grand total for this year was already in the hundreds. According to CNN, the number of retail bankruptcies is now up 31 percent compared to the same time period last year… Bankruptcies continue to pile up in the retail industry. More than 300 retailers have filed for bankruptcy so far this year, according to data from BankruptcyData.com. That’s up 31% from the same time last year. Most of those filings were for small companies — the proverbial Mom & Pop store with a single location. But there are also plenty of household names on the list. Yes, the growth of online retailers such as Amazon is fueling some of this, but the Internet has been around for several decades now. So why are retail store closings and retail bankruptcies surging so dramatically all of a sudden? Just a few days ago, another major victim of the retail apocalypse made headlines all over the nation when it filed for bankruptcy. At one time Gymboree was absolutely thriving, but now it is in a desperate fight to survive… Children’s clothing chain Gymboree has filed for bankruptcy protection, aiming to slash its debts and close hundreds of stores amid crushing pressure on retailers. Gymboree said it plans to remain in business but will close 375 to 450 of its 1,281 stores in filing for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Gymboree employs more than 11,000 people, including 10,500 hourly workers. And in recent weeks other major retailers that were once very prosperous have also been forced to close stores and lay off staff… http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/2017-is-going-to-be-the-worst-retail-apocalypse-in-u-s-history-more-than-300-retailers-have-already-filed-for-bankruptcy The narration of this article does not constitute an endorsement of its contents or point of view, by this channel. Learn how to survive the collapse with http://RealGoldMoney.com - NATION | The coming U.S. Retail Apocalypse is on the horizon despite the economic report of the President has been release by Obama's "Council of Economic Advisers". The White House states the report, "discusses the progress that has been made in recovering from the worst recession since the Great Depression, and President Obama's agenda to build on this progress by creating jobs and expanding economic opportunity." However John Williams the analyst at ShadowStats.com latest report revealed "Payroll Jobs Increased by 175,000, but the Number of actual employed Employed rose by only 42,000, Williams also noted that "deliberate misreporting showed December payrolls up by 84,000, Where 67,000 aas the Consistent Number." But how's is the retail sector doing? Michael Snyder editor of the "Economic collapse Blog" paints a very different picture of the retail marketplace. In his report titled "20 Facts About The Great U.S. Retail Apocalypse That Will Blow Your Mind" he examines multiple retail chain stores earnings reports and press releases. What you are about to hear is the picture of the economy, Snyder paints, from the mouths of the retail sector themselves and not an analyst in the White House. There is currently 1 billion square feet of retail space sitting vacant in the United States, about to add to that figure last week, Radio Shack announced it was going to close more than a thousand stores, as office retailer Staples announced 225 stores were about to get chopped. And Staples competitor Office Depot reports sales have been declining for 13 straight quarters.. Clothing retailer J.C. Penney just announced plans to close 33 stores and 2000 jobs after losing 586 million dollars in the second quarter of 2013 alone. Joining Penney's CNN reported Sears Sears is "expected to shutter another 500 Sears and Kmart locations soon" after closing nearly 300 stores since 2010. Sales at Sears has been declining for 27 straight quarters. Macy's is closing 5 stores eliminating 2,500 jobs and big box store Target is eliminating 475 jobs. Niche store Aéropostale is projected it will close about 175 stores and "The Children's Place" announced that it will be closing 125 locations by 2016. Best Buy is closing 15 Canadian locations and cut 900 jobs after shuttering 50 US stores in 2012, while Blockbuster Video has completely shut down all of their stores. In the food sector analysts project that even with a growing population grocery store sales will decline by 1.7 percent (3rd paragraph) as McDonalds sales dipped 3.3 percent in January. Superstore Wal-Mart is not immune to the economic collapse. David Cheesewright, CEO of Walmart International recently stated that Wal-Mart is going to try to protect US market share - in light of the companies domestic "earnings warning" - by fostering the growth from outside the US. However Cheesewright pointed out, "We're seeing economies under stress pretty much everywhere we operate" Snyder wraps his 20 points with a forecast from retail consultant Howard Davidowitz who predicts in 15 to 20 years half of America's shopping malls will fail and that "only upscale shopping centers with anchors like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus will survive." Now if you account for the number of consumers migrating to online shopping Snyder makes it a point that retail experts can only attribute 20% of the decline to Internet shoppers. The rest, Snyder attributes to "the slow, steady death of the middle class U.S. consumer." He reports , "median household income has declined for five years in a row, but all of our bills just keep going up. That means that the amount of disposable income that average Americans have continues to shrink, and that is really bad news for retailers." The U.S. retail landscape is a study in contradictions. On one hand you have the traditional department stores like Macy's, Target and Nordstrom. That segment seems to be in steep decline. Just this past week, concerns over their profit outlook have rung investor alarm bells in Wall Street. Macy's stock has taken it on the chin in recent days after it said first quarter sales fell nearly seven percent. But other types of retailers are going strong, namely Amazon. For more on the U.S. retail industry and its future outlook, CCTV America’s Michelle Makori spoke to Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst & D.C. bureau chief for Bankrate.

If the U.S. economy is doing just fine, why have we already shattered the all-time record for retail store closings in a single year? Whenever I write about our “retail apocalypse”, many try to counter my arguments by pointing out the growing dominance of Amazon. And I certainly can’t deny that online shopping is on the rise, but it still accounts for less than 10 percent of total U.S. retail sales. No, something bigger is happening in our economy, and it isn’t receiving nearly enough attention from the mainstream media. When Toys “R” Us filed for Chapter 11 in September, capping an unexpectedly sharp collapse for a company whose bonds mere months earlier were trading just shy of par, the prevailing consensus was that once the company's balance sheet is restructured, it would continue its existence without substantial operational changes and with largely the same number of stores and employees. However, in the first confirmation that the company's collapse was much more extensive than just the result of excess leverage, Bloomberg reports that Toys "R" Us is considering closing at least 182 U.S. stores - and as many as 200 - in the face of weak holiday sales. According to Bloomberg's sources, the store closures are coming after a sharp contraction in sales which declined 15% this Christmas-shopping season from a year earlier.

The mall was America’s third place — for better or for worse. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Our lives are lived in 1 of 3 places, the home, the workplace and the “third place,” which is anywhere outside of those two. Toward the end of the 20th century, the regional shopping mall had become that third place, the hang-out spot in suburban America. This was largely by design — an immigrant architect created the first mall in the vision that it would be a community gathering place. The plan didn’t work out as he intended. While malls did take off, they more often than not couldn’t quite catch on as ideal “third places.” But with an estimated 25% of shopping malls expected to close in the next five years, there’s an opportunity to re-examine where Americans spend their time and what could be the next iteration of the third place. Further reading for those interested in this subject, I recommend the following books and articles: Ray Oldenburg's The Great Good Place — he coined the term 'third place' and set the theory for the 8 qualities mentioned in this video: https://www.amazon.com/Great-Good-Place-Bookstores-Community/dp/1569246815 New Yorker's 2006 profile of the creator of regional shopping malls: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004/03/15/the-terrazzo-jungle On the role US tax policy played in the shopping-center boom of the 1950s and 1960s: https://www.jstor.org/stable/2169635?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents & Vox's Matt Ylgesias on the coming ‘retail apocalypse’ in the states: https://www.vox.com/new-money/2017/5/4/15124038/regional-mall-apocalypse p.s. here is Toto's Africa (playing in an abandoned shopping centre) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D__6hwqjZAs Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. Why Saying Goodbye To Toys 'R' Us Is Making Me So Sad It’s strange to be emotional about something as commercial and consumerist as the collapse of a multi-billion dollar business, but here I am. And here we are, I’m assuming. News broke earlier today that Toys ‘R’ Us, the classic giant toy store that time (as well as every modern shopper) has seemingly forgotten, announced that it will be closing its remaining 880 US stores, including those left in the UK. This is following a troubling bankruptcy filing back in September of 2017, after which over 100 of the retail outlets were shuttered as the company tried to straighten things out and, I’m guessing, salvage any possibility left for redemption. I had a bad feeling that this is where Toys ‘R’ Us was ultimately headed, eventually ready to succumb to the pressures of online shopping and big box competitors just like Play Co. Toys and KB Toys did decades prior. But the naive kid in me was holding onto a thin strand of hope that things would somehow turn around, that the company could perhaps downsize a little and get its act together in an effort to reorganize, restructure and redirect. But no, the ship is finally sinking, and with it goes a cherished part of my past. Wandering the hallowed aisles of Toys ‘R’ Us was an absolutely massive part of my childhood, and from what I can gather, I’m not alone. For any kid I grew up with and alongside in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the place was a true toy mecca, a retail church built for the sole purpose of worshipping everything awesome and cool. My heart would start racing as soon as those automatic entrance doors slid open and revealed the football-field-sized expanse of plastic and electronic possibilities. It was essentially a 9-year-old’s inner world made real; the combined imagination, fantasy and sense of wonder manifested out into something explorable. The only places that came close to providing that same feeling of awe were probably Discovery Zone or Disneyland. I mean, the toy choices were totally overwhelming. Because really, I could only pick one toy to buy per trip, and to an excited third grader hopped up on Fun Dip and Now & Laters, that was like choosing your favorite Power Ranger Zord or Goosebumps book—practically impossible. That’s why I was always so envious of those lucky kids on Nickelodeon that got to do that radical Super Toy Run. Pushing a cart around an empty Toys ‘R’ Us store and piling in as many toys as possible seemed like the ultimate dream scenario. Not saying I was in any way wanting for toys as a kid, but the unrestrained extravagance of that contest always got me going. I would scheme for hours about how to fit as many items as possible into that damn cart. You know, in case that were ever me on TV. I was reading the Washington Post’s article earlier today after the news broke, and a quote from that piece hit me really hit me hard. Not just due to how stark and unflinching it was, but because of how devastatingly true it rang: “You can find more zest for life in a Walgreens.” Damn. How real can it get? And the words aren’t embellished, either. Truthfully, every time I’ve walked into a Toys ‘R’ Us over the last few decades, it’s been an undeniably depressing affair. Everything was strewn about and unorganized, the floors were dirty, the staff was largely indifferent and the buildings never smelled all that...fresh. Hell, maybe it’s always been that way and I was just too young to see the writing on the wall at the time. Anecdotally, I know my parents didn’t particularly like going into Toys ‘R’ Us stores while I was growing up for many of the reasons I’ve listed, so who knows. Which makes me think the following: Perhaps that rose-colored era, that late-80s/mid-90s Toys ‘R’ Us that occupied many of our youths, has been gone for a long time. Even if that’s true, it still doesn’t stop me from feeling a longing sense of nostalgic loss at the dissolution of this iconic store chain. And to the 30,000 employees who will lose their jobs as a result of this closure, I wish you the best of luck in finding new employment. So let this article serve as one man’s small, flailing tribute to the biggest toy store of his formative years, and a humble reminder to not only never grow up, but to keep being, maybe forever, a Toys ‘R’ Us kid. Thank you for watching and supporting! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topics I discuss or anything that interests you!

Top Retail Giant to Close 72 Stores Across US–Thousands Out of Jobs Sears, the one-time American retail giant, said on Thursday, May 31, it plans to shutter another 72 locations to stem losses in the face of deepening financial distress and reported a nearly 12 percent drop in quarterly comparable-store sales.
