After a year of fighting with the 'quirky' wifi of the Zoom 5354 cable modem/router I decided to visit my local Comcast office and rent one of their xfinity cable modem/routers. In this case, an Arris TG1682G modem/wireless gateway. The results...Though they are both DOCSIS 3.0 modems, the Arris is considerably faster than the Zoom. Mostly due to the 32 downstream channels in the Arris modem. In contrast, the Zoom only has 8 downstream channels. The biggest advantage is that I now have functional wifi that doesn't randomly quit streaming data. Plus, the Kenmore Alfie can now connect. For reasons unknown, and after a few months of connecting (it would still drop, but at least it would connect), the Zoom and the Alfie refuse to work together now. Complete resets and reconfigurations of both devices wouldn't resolve the issue. It now works thanks to the Arris, and I can use my Alfie again! In looking at reviews on most of the sub-$150 modems on the market, they all appear to have frequent reports of the same wifi issues. Due to this I decided the $10/month rental of a unit that actually works is worth the money - at least for now.

For the most part everyone needs a modem so that they can access the internet. But did not you know that you don't have to use the one provided to you by your ISP? Some ISP rent you a modem free of charge, but what happens if you have to pay to rent one? What if you were not paying a fee for it before but now you have to? Well that's when you may start asking yourself should I keep paying a rental fee, or just buy one for my self? That's why I made this video, to answer those question. Keep in mind that this is just my experiences. Yours may vary. The wire cutter article: https://goo.gl/yL5oPe Amazon link: http://amzn.to/2waVRSz (affiliate link)

Setup works great! Has 8 downstream and 4 upstream channel bonding and rated for 100Mbps service. You can see status at http://192.168.100.1 to ensure proper operation. DOCSIS3.0 is a must now days as the old 2.0 modems are no longer supported. Instillation takes seconds. Instructions are simple. Just plug in and call cable co to provision with S/N and MAC address. Linksys is owned by Belkin.

If your internet connection keeps disconnecting, the problem could be a high upstream power level. If your upstream power level is at 58 dBmV or higher, an Active Return amplifier could be the answer to your problem. I finally gave up on COX technical support and technician house visits and took matters into my own hands. Now, regardless of what happens "at the street", my connection remains steady and consistent. Materials used: Motorola BDA-K1-RA Active Return Amplifier. UPDATE 8/7/2016: I now recommend the PCT 1-Port Variable Gain Signal Amplifier With Active Return by PCT - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006T3H9TM . It runs much cooler, allows for upstream and downstream signal level adjustments and costs about half the price. Speaker: Guy Martin, Security Researcher Cable modems are widely used these days for internet connections or other applications. This talk gives a detailed overview of this mean of communication with a focus on its security. DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) is currently the most used protocol around the world for providing internet over TV coaxial cable. Due to its nature, this protocol can easily be sniffed by taping onto the TV cable using a digital TV card. By doing this, you can not only sniff your own connection but all the connections of the entire neighborhood. With my tool packet-o-matic and an inexpensive DVB-C card, countless things are possible ranging from dumping people's email into maildir to removing firewall rules and quota limitation on your connection or even a DoS of all HTTP communications by injecting TCP reset packets. Update: Modem just died after 3 years usage! DOCSIS 3.0 with 8x speed! Do not buy the SB6121 as only has 4 channels down/up. This one has 8 channels bonded download speed. The SB6183 has 16 channels but costs $200!. I am very happy with this modem. The DOCSIS 2.0 modems can only do one channel at 30 down/ 5 Mbps up and I was getting choking with many active connections with Bit Torrent running. Motorola Arras SurfBoard Extreme!

I explain how Time Warner Cable (TWC) or Spectrum can lock down your modem so other internet providers like WOW cannot use the modem if you decide to switch companies. #twc #timewarnercable Modem I use Surfboard SB6141 http://amzn.to/2u7VeZq Gear used for videos: https://kit.com/clintonjd Subscribe link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO4TWK699kxWJ4wdQxaqxow?sub_confirmation=1 Channel description: Ever say to yourself "I wish I would have known that earlier". Watch more How to Set Up Internet videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/499718-How-to-Set-Up-a-Modem-Internet-Setup So I'm going to take you a little bit through how to setup and install your modem. The truth is, most of the time you're not really going to have to do this. Because when you call your Internet service provider and set up an account, they will in most cases send a technician over to your place to set everything up for you. But, it's a pretty simple process if you do decide to do it yourself. And when you get the modem from the either, cable or DSL company, it will look like this little guy right here. And basically you just have to connect it to three things. One, is power. So you just connect it to the wall. The other is your computer. On this particular modem we can connect it either through ethernet or through USB. And the third is to connect it to the outside world. In this case, this is a cable modem so I'm going to connect it to a coaxial cable that comes out from the street to my apartment. And it's also used by my TV and stuff like that. The other kind of modem is a DSL modem which will look pretty much identical but instead of a coaxial cable, it will have a little phone connection. One final thing to mention is a little bit about troubleshooting. So like I said, modems are a pretty simple device but sometimes they do break or they do stop working. Nine times out of ten, the best way to fix this is to simply unplug from the power adapter right here, wait two minutes, and plug it back in. After a few seconds all the lights should come back up on the front and it should be working again. That's it about setting up your modem.
