What is Discrimination?

Series 2, Episode 1 of Have You Got That Right? See www.HaveYouGotThatRight.com for all episodes. See http://www.unaids.org/en/resources/campaigns/2017_zerodiscriminationday for more on Zero Discrimination Day. Discrimination is a major breach of human rights. Discriminatory attitudes are a big factor in why human rights abuses happen. The United Nations Human Rights Committee, which supervises and monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights has described discrimination in the following terms in General Comment 18 on Non-Discrimination: “... the Committee believes that the term "discrimination" as used in the Covenant should be understood to imply any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference which is based on any ground such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, and which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by all persons, on an equal footing, of all rights and freedoms.”

Discrimination visuelle

02:40
Discrimination: Crash Course Government and Politics #31

08:40
Today, Craig is going to wrap up our discussion of discrimination by looking more closely at those “discrete and insular minorities” referenced in the 14th Amendment. We’ll talk about instances of discrimination of Asian, European, and Latino immigrants, Native Americans, non-English speakers, people with disabilities, and LGBT people. We’ll also talk about federal and state responses to this discrimination. It’s a lot to cover, and we’ll only scratch the surface of the battles these groups fought (and are still fighting) for equality, but we will give you some historical context for the discrimination that has occurred and the court decisioned made to help defend these groups. Modern Discrimination: Subtle but Significant: Mikki Hebl at TEDxRiceU

18:38
Many displays of discrimination are now prevented by protective laws. However, subtle forms of discrimination are pervasive and enacted in everyday interpersonal interactions. These micro-transgressions, incivilities, and other negative interpersonal biases are subtle but very profound in both their display and implications. Mikki Hebl, a professor in psychology and management at Rice University, studies such discrimination as well as reduction strategies. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

North Koreans In Los Angeles Are Facing Discrimination—In Koreatown (HBO)

05:57
North Koreans living in Los Angeles had a lot to worry about, even before the Trump-Kim summit was announced. Los Angeles’ Koreatown hosts the largest population of North Koreans in the United States. But while iving in an area where so many residents also speak their language can make easing into American society less daunting, they can also face discrimination — from other Koreans. “Some North Koreans, they hide the fact that they're from North Korea,” says Sarah Cho, founder of an organization that helps defectors start their new lives in the US. She says that while many South Koreans are curious and helpful to newly arrived North Korean immigrants, others can be abusive. LGBTQ Discrimination

03:59
9 out of 10 LGBT teens say they have experienced harassment at school. "Gay or Straight...Don't Discriminate" challenges all teens to consider what it would be like to be bullied, harassed, or questioned solely on the basis of sexuality. This powerful PSA encourages teens to think twice about the damaging words or actions that are sometimes used towards those who do not identify as heterosexual. If you or someone you know is being bullied or harassed because of their sexual orientation, contact the GLBT national youth talkline at: 1-800-246-7743 or visit www.glnh.org. This public service announcement was produced entirely by teens for teens by Community Healthcare Network's Teens P.A.C.T. program in New York City. It is just one in a series of public service announcements collectively titled, MORE THAN JUST SEX! MORE THAN JUST SEX aims to empower young people to make positive decisions, create social change, and reduce the rates of teen pregnancy, STD's, and HIV in New York City and beyond. 06:26
Recognizing discrimination in the workplace

28:32
This week's episode examines the issue of discrimination in the workplace. The two most common forms of workplace discrimination involve race and gender issues. Beasley Allen Shareholder Larry Golston is a guest on the show this week. He has been with Beasley Allen for nearly 13 years, practicing in the areas of employment law, class action cases and insurance fraud and bad faith cases. Golston talks with show host Gibson Vance about how to recognize discrimination in the workplace. He says a person's instincts are usually good, but there are ways to evaluate your situation to figure out if you may have a legal claim. First, he says, determine if you are part of a "protected class." This is a legal term that specifically defines certain groups or types of people that cannot be discriminated against, whose rights are protected. These may include race, gender, age, national origin, religion and disability. Secondly, he says to look for either direct evidence or circumstantial evidence to support your claim of discrimination. Discrimination issues may involve someone being paid more than another for the same work, someone being passed over for promotions, or being subjected to a hostile work environment or even verbal or physical assault. Golston said it is very important to document your situation if you feel you are being discriminated against or harassed. He says laws are in place to protect workers from retaliation by their employer for bringing a complaint. For more information about Workplace Discrimination, visit: - http://www.larrygolston-law.com
