The Legal Profession: Regulating for independence - Baroness Ruth Deech

01:09:39
Britain's legal profession is renowned the world over for its skill and independence. The cab rank rule governs barristers, ie they are obliged to accept the next case that presents itself, thereby ensuring that even the most unpopular of defendants has a representative, and that the barrister is not identified with the client's cause. This is a vital ingredient of the Rule of Law. Should there be self regulation or should the profession be regulated by external bodies composed of lay members? Through the centuries the lawyers, although unpopular, have maintained their professional standards and their own systems of governance and education. What difference will the Legal Services Act 2007 make, and should we continue to have a divided profession, barristers and solicitors? The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-legal-profession-regulating-for-independence Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. http://www.gresham.ac.uk

Success in law and accounting career in vedic astrology

CLICK HERE- http://www.astrologykrs.com Book link- http://www.astrologykrs.com/Shop.html 2nd channel: http://www.youtube.com/astrologykrschannel #Kapiel Raaj, This video is hosted by Kapiel Raaj. These videos are based on the ancient science of Vedic Astrology known as Jyotish in India. These programs are to educate everyone on the importance and accuracy of astrology why it still matters. Astrology is not so easy to understand and it's not that difficult to master. But, there are some methods that were lost in pop culture astrology known as daily, weekly, monthly and yearly horoscopes. Vedic Astrology is not more about psychological reading but actual physical reading that also shows your exact timing of events like marriage, children, career, graduation, accidents, illness etc. This entire channel is hosted by me alone, Kapiel Raaj. Growing up with an uncle who was a Vedic Astrologer himself made it very easy for me to dive into the ocean of astrology and discover many secrets which I share with you on KRSchannel, the fastest growing astrology channel on you tube. When some wants to know what planet in what house does what, or what planet in what sign does what, this is the channel they come to. I do not make regular weekly horoscope because unless your horoscope is present in front of me, giving you a general weekly horoscope is as good as suicide of astrology. It's no longer predictive science. In my channel you will find videos that will never be outdated and will always apply to you alone. This astrology channel is like a encyclopedia of astrology. You can look at these videos in 50 years and they will still apply and work. I take also do Celebrities horoscope with parody, combining my two passion of acting and astrology together which has become a hit on Youtube. I also do skits of zodiac sign compatibility which again is entertainment and education at the same time. This channel will make you a astrologer where you won't need to go to anyone, but you will diagnose your problem yourself because no one has more vested interest in you than you. What I bring to the table is the truth about astrology and astronomy of India.
What is the Best Major for a Law Career - James McCormick

01:53
In Chapter 1 of 12 in his 2010 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, legal career advisor James McCormick shares what college students and recent college graduates should consider when preparing for and / or planning a law career. McCormick notes there is no preferred major when planning a law career. The only exception is if choosing a specialty field such as intellectual property law. McCormick points out key legal skills - reading, writing, communication, applying critical thought - can be developed across many majors and professions before law school. James McCormick is a Vice President at Empire Search Partners in New York City. Before transitioning into legal career advisory services, McCormick practiced law as an employee benefits and executive compensation attorney for both Proskauer Rose and Jones Day. James McCormick: Well, I think you have to take a step back and you have to look at what lawyers do. At the end of the day, you are reading, you are writing, and you are applying critical thought. I think that, as college grads or as college students, finding something where you can really feel as though you are engaged by the material and you are enjoying what you are doing and you are applying those kinds of core elements. I think that is enough. I don’t think you can necessarily say that a history degree or a political science degree or a philosophy degree is going to be anyhow more advantageous than a math degree, a chemistry degree, an engineering degree. Erik Michielsen: It is independent of law firm career development. James McCormick: Unless you are looking at a very specialized part of the legal world, namely intellectual property. That particular skill set requires people to understand and be able to navigate particular scientific realms if you will. Other than that, I think the core skill sets that you need as a lawyer - critical thought, ability to communicate, ability to write - all of those things can be gained in any number of disciplines. That it need not be some type of law law specific major or course of study.

Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master's degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest in 1945, then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man and Woman (1958) to be, "from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written." He also explored human consciousness, in the essay "The New Alchemy" (1958), and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962). Towards the end of his life, he divided his time between a houseboat in Sausalito and a cabin on Mount Tamalpais. Many of his books are now available in digital format and many of his recorded talks and lectures are available on the Internet. According to the critic Erik Davis, his "writings and recorded talks still shimmer with a profound and galvanizing lucidity. ====================================================== ©⚠★ Copyright Disclaimer ★⚠© Title 17, US Code (Sections 107-118 of the copyright law, Act 1976), All media in this video is used for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Career Choice Series: Patent Law

In this segment our speakers will explore patent law. Patents grant exclusive rights to inventors (whether working individually or on behalf of companies) to prevent others from using or otherwise exploiting their inventions for a period of time. Patented inventions can relate to products or processes in technology, gaming, wineries, agriculture, or any other industry. Patents are obtained and enforced on a global scale. Practicing in patent law can be transactional (assisting clients in obtaining, licensing, or evaluating patents) or litigious (representing clients in lawsuits for patent infringement). Join our speakers as they share their pathways into patent law, what attracted them to it, the pros and cons, and what a typical day entails. Speakers: Stephanie L. USA Law Career Part 4

00:15
Book Review: The Path Of The Law by Lawcare.Tub The Path of the Law presents the conclusions drawn by Holmes after more than 30 years of legal observation, thought, and practice of law. He probably wrote this essay to further discuss what he began in his most famous publication, The Common Law. The Path of The Law was written not as a manual about the practice of law, but a manual to show students how to think like a lawyer; what it means to be a good lawyer; and what it means to have a successful law career.

Popular Legal Profession Themes in 2014

00:56
While results will vary depending on the size of your client’s legal firm as well as the client base and nature of their practice, there are certain themes that were very popular in this past year. Robert Denney Associates, Inc. recently released their 26th annual report of “What’s Hot and Not in the Legal Profession,” which highlighted the hottest practice areas and industries for those in the legal profession. The following are just a few of the areas listed. - Intellectual Property. There has been a strong call for patent reform across the board in the U.S., especially with the rise of social media and the increase in branding. Due to the lack of reform, patent lawsuits have been on the rise in the past year. Popular “patent troll” Acacia Research Corporation lost a major case in July when they were one of the first to apply new Supreme Court guidance about when ideas are too “abstract” to be patented. - Federal False Claims. According to legal experts, there is not an industry that has not been affected by federal false claims. One expert, who has handled whistleblower cases for many years, claims that there has been an explosion of these types of cases in the past year. - Labor & Employment. In August, President Obama implemented an executive order regarding contractors and subcontractors who receive more than $500,000 in federal money. The order, called the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order, was the latest in a series of directives this past year on the employment obligations of federal contractors. It requires federal government contractors to disclose labor law violations from the past three years and gives agencies more guidance on how to consider labor violations when awarding federal contracts. These are just some of the hottest themes in the legal profession. At Insurance for Lawyers (IFL) we understand how important it is for your clients to stay current on what’s going on in the legal profession. Doing so could help them mitigate losses and reduce their risks. In addition, all lawyers should invest in a Lawyers Liability Insurance policy in order to financially protect themselves from malpractice claims.
