Maine is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south; New Hampshire to the west; and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. It is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobster and clams. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years. As Maine entered the 18th century, only a half dozen European settlements had survived. Patriot and Loyalist forces contended for Maine's territory during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820 when it voted to secede from Massachusetts. On March 15, 1820, it was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state under the Missouri Compromise. Maine is the 39th most extensive and the 41st most populous of the 50 United States. With respect to crime rates, Maine is also often considered the safest state in the U.S. Maine is the 'whitest' state in the union. Source: Wikipedia

Maine is known as the "Pine Tree State." Much of Maine is forested, but between the thousands of lakes and rivers, and the extensive Atlantic Ocean coastline, residents of Maine spend plenty of time on the water. Our series of US geography videos "Visit the 50 States," gives you a little history and interesting facts about each state. We would like to give a big shout out to viewers francis liongson, MorrisPlayzMC Minecraft & Blue Husky102 for suggesting this video. --------------------SECOND CHANNEL------------------- Check out my second channel More5! for funny, weird, interesting news, along with the latest trending topics within the YouTube community. If you love all kinds of weather then Maine is for you. Locals say in the year you get every kind of weather known to man and that instead of 4 seasons, Maine has 10. The environment is about as good as it gets, and Mainers are healthy people. Acadia National Park has got everything that a lover of the outdoors could ever need. The oldest eastern national park has hiking trails, large granite peaks, some of the tallest mountains on the US Atlantic coast. If you love you're food to be posh, then you won't be disappointed by Maine's Lobster, often said to be the best in the world. Although it's economy doesn't compare to states like Texas, it is still a beautifully relaxing place to live and is one of the best at caring for seniors. 4) New Hampshire Yet another New England state ranks high because the quality of life is solid in the Granite State. The crime rate is very low, the environment is clean, residents are healthy and it's health care is one of the best. But like some of its neighbors, the state could use some more things to do, but then again if there are too many attractions you do sacrifice it's peaceful atmosphere. It's economy is also strong, ranked 9th in the US in 2014, so there is money to be made. Overall New Hampshire has a very good balance, and balance makes for a good quality of life. 3) Minnesota Residents of the North Star State pride themselves on being nice, which helps explain why this is such a livable state year after year. Maybe it's the rough winters, maybe it's the renowned Mayo Clinic, but Minnesotans are a hardy bunch as this is one of the healthiest states. From the cosmopolitan Twin Cities to the rugged North Woods, the state has something for just about everyone. Overall it ranks highly in pretty much every category such as quality of life, economy, cost of doing business, Infrastructure & education. It is a good all rounder, and just like New Hampshire it has a very good balance. While there are states that offer a lot more & you can live much better if you have the money, states with a better balance offer a higher quality of life for the overall population rather than just a select few. 2) Vermont Sealing New England's dominance in this category, the Green Mountain State reveals the nation's lowest violent crime rate. Vermonters are again in excellent health, fit and trim, with good healthcare but also it offers some of greatest farmers markets in the U.S. Know for its excellent beer, cheese, and of course Maple products. The environment is pristine, and the state is welcoming and inclusive. No matter where you're from or what you're beliefs are, Vermont offers equality for everyone. There's no surprise that Vermont has the second best quality of life in the U.S. 1) Hawaii The Aloha State achieves a near perfect Quality of Life score, with the nation's healthiest population and the cleanest environment. Of course it's amazing weather & the fact that if you live there you're basically in what most people would consider paradise 365 days a year. Residents are protected by strong anti-discrimination laws, and you may never run out of things to see and do. Hawaii is all about just living, it's not the best place to start a tech company, or to make million in any industry, but it is recognized as the best place to live if you just want to live. Realistically you will most likely already need quite a bit of money to live in Hawaii, as it isn't cheap. But should you be fortunate enough to afford to live there, you may never want to leave. History of Lewiston, Maine / History of towns in United States

11:00
Country: United States of America State: Maine County: Androscoggin County City: Lewiston Population (2010): • Total 36,592 • Density 1,071.5/sq mi (413.7/km2) • Demonym Lewistonion HISTORY: In 1768 a Boston Company known as the Pejepscot Proprietors granted land for a settlement to be called Lewiston on the east side of the Androscoggin River at Twenty-Mile Falls. The recipients were Jonathan Bagley and Moses Little of Newbury, Massachusetts. Settlement began two years later when Paul Hildreth and his family arrived. Hildreth's log cabin was a short distance below the falls and he established a ferry service nearby. Other families followed. By 1790, Lewiston was home to 532 persons. Lewiston was incorporated as a town on February 18, 1795. Water power was harnessed by a timber dam by 1808-1809 and a canal was built. The town grew to 1,549 inhabitants by 1830. The first bridge was built in 1823. Although there were mills by the falls, the present downtown Lewiston was still occupied by a farm, a few dwellings, and a school house. As early as 1836, efforts were made to build dams, canals, and mills, but capital was lacking. Boston investors later made the developments possible. Each of the 1850 and 1860 census counts showed a doubling of the size of Lewiston. The DeWitt Hotel was built around 1854 and the Maine Seminary, later Bates College was established in 1855. After being chartered as a city in 1861, the city prospered during the Civil War, as the demand for textiles was high and steady. Lewiston's first mayor, Jacob Barker Ham, took office in 1863. Subsequent mayors went on to higher office. William P. Frye went to Congress and served as President pro tem of the U.S. Senate, twice being next in line for the presidency due to vacancies in the office of Vice President. Alonzo Garcelon, mayor in 1871, became governor of Maine in 1879. Another mayor-turned-congressman was Daniel McGillicuddy. An impressive city building was constructed in 1873. The current Lewiston City Hall replaced it after a fire in 1890. The Music Hall was built in 1877, with the aim of being "the best opera house east of Boston." It was renovated between 1999 and 2003 to house the Lewiston District courthouse. A spur from Lewiston by the Canadian National Railway introduced competition to the Maine Central Railroad and freight rates dropped. Starting in the 1870s, the Grand Trunk Station became the arrival point for thousands of French Canadians. Many settled in the area between Lisbon Street and the river, in blocks built by the mills or in an area called "Little Canada." By 1880, the population had risen to 19,083, a tenfold increase in 40 years. The oldest Roman Catholic church in Lewiston is St. Joseph's Church, built on Main Street between 1863 and 1867. The first parochial school was established in 1882. The first teachers were Sisters of Charity until replaced by the Ladies of Sion in 1892. St. Peter's Church served the French parish, was replaced by Saints Peter and Paul Church, built 1905-1938. St. Dominic's High School was founded in 1941 in the clubhouse of L'Association St. Dominique. Lewiston High School opened in 1850 and moved into a brick building on Main Street in 1859. A fire company was started in 1849. The Grey Nuns organized the first hospital, St. Mary's, which was dedicated in 1889. Central Maine General Hospital was established in 1891 with thirty beds in two houses on Main Street. Due to increased competitions from textile concerns in the South and overseas, the textile industry in Lewiston has gradually declined. A variety of new industries have grownup to replace it. The Geiger Brothers, publishers of The Farmer's Almanac, brought their printing business to Lewiston in 1955. Today 36 592 people live in Lewiston (2010 census).

HOME: The Story of Maine "The Struggle for Identity"

26:43
Have you ever wondered how Maine got its boundaries, or why it looks the way it does on a map? The idea of Maine’s independence from Massachusetts had its detractors, not just from the so-called slave states but even from within, and the northern and northeastern borders were still in dispute over two decades after Maine became a state in 1820. This installment of HOME: The Story of Maine explores the tug-of-war with Canada, Britain and Massachusetts over Maine’s boundaries and provides a historical perspective on the bloodless “Aroostook War” of 1839 that eventually drew a line through Madawaska and Edmunston, New Brunswick and resulted in the creation of the military outposts of Fort Fairfield and Fort Kent. Also examined in this program is the quick rise of Eastport as a thriving sea port to facilitate the illegal shipping of lumber to Britain in violation of President Thomas Jefferson’s trade embargo, which crippled Maine’s early forest economy.

The most remote peak in the Northeast is a real treat to visit and is harder than most Western mountains with 39 miles r/t and 5k+' vertical. Original music by WoodBelly and skis by Liberty. Commentary from New England locals Tyler Ray and Andrew Drummond. See more state high point ski videos on this channel or beta at TreasuredHeights.

Coin US 25 с 2003 MAINE State Quarter Pemaquid Point Lighthouse; schooner Victory Chimes at sea

00:40
Coin US 25 с MAINE State Quarters Pemaquid Point Lighthouse; the schooner Victory Chimes at sea My quarter collection The 50 state quarters were released by the United States Mint every ten weeks, or five each year. They were released in the same order that the states ratified the Constitution. Each quarter's reverse commemorated one of the 50 states with a design emblematic of its unique history, traditions and symbols. Certain design elements, such as state flags, images of living persons, and head-and-shoulder images of deceased persons were prohibited. The authorizing legislation and Mint procedures gave states a substantial role and considerable discretion in determining the design that would represent their state. The majority of states followed a process by which the governor solicited the state's citizens to submit design concepts and appointed an advisory group to oversee the process. Governors submitted three to five finalist design concepts to the secretary of treasury for approval. Approved designs were returned to the states for selection of a final design. States usually employed one of two approaches in making this selection. In 33 states, the governor selected the final recommended design, often based on the recommendations of advisory groups and citizens. In the other 17 states, citizens selected the final design through online, telephone, mail or other public votes. US Mint engravers applied all final design concepts approved by the secretary of treasury. The media and public attention surrounding this process and the release of each state's quarter was intense and produced significant publicity for the program. The US State Quarters Program was the most popular commemorative coin program in United States history; the United States Mint has estimated that 147 million Americans have collected state quarters and 3.5 million participated in the selection of state quarter designs. By the end of 2008, all of the original 50 states quarters had been minted and released. The official total, according to the US Mint, was 34,797,600,000 coins. The average mintage was 695,952,000 coins per state, but ranged between Virginia's 1,594,616,000 to Oklahoma's 416,600,000. Demand was stronger for quarters issued early in the program. This was due to weakening economic conditions in later years and the waning of the initial surge of demand when the program was launched. Another factor was the reassertion of the Treasury Department's opposition to the program. When the director's term ended in 2000, the Treasury proceeded to reduce and finally terminate the most effective elements of the Mint's promotional program despite the high return on investment they earned commemorative quarters

Voisine v. United States: Oral Argument - February 29, 2016

52:41
Facts: In 2003 and 2005, Stephen Voisine was convicted of assaulting a woman (with whom he was in a domestic relationship) under a Maine state statute that establishes that a person is guilty of assault if that person “knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly causes bodily injury or offensive physical contact to another person.” A violation of that statute is misdemeanor domestic violence assault if the victim is a family or household member. In 2009, Voisine was arrested on the federal misdemeanor charge of killing a bald eagle. During the course of the investigation, police recovered a rifle from Voisine and, because of his earlier misdemeanor assault convictions, arrested and charged Voisine with violating a federal statute that makes it a crime for a person convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence to possess a firearm. William Armstrong III was convicted of assaulting his wife in violation of Maine’s misdemeanor domestic violence assault statutes in 2002 and 2008. In 2010, police searched the Armstrong residence for drugs and drug paraphernalia and discovered ammunition which was later linked to guns Armstrong had transported to a friend’s house. Armstrong was also charged with violating the federal statute that makes it a crime for a person convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence to possess a firearm. Voisine and Armstrong moved to dismiss the charges against them and argued that Maine’s misdemeanor domestic violence assault statutes do not constitute misdemeanor domestic violence under the federal statute because “recklessness” is sufficient for conviction under the Maine statute, but not the federal one. The district court denied the motions, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit affirmed. The defendants petitioned for a writ of certiorari from the U.S. Supreme Court, which remanded the case in light of that Court’s decision in United States v. Castleman , which held that offensive touching satisfied the “physical force” requirement of the federal statute. On remand, the appellate court again held that Maine’s statute constituted misdemeanor domestic violence under the federal statute. Question: Does a misdemeanor crime that requires only a showing of recklessness qualify as a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence under federal statutes 18 U.S.C. §§ 921(a)(33)(A) and 922(g)(9)? For more information about this case see: https://www.oyez.org/cases/2015/14-10154 Section 1: 00:00:05 Section 2: 00:28:53 Section 3: 00:50:46 PuppyJusticeAutomated videos are created by a program written by Adam Schwalm.
