Here's why you should stop memorizing your passwords
Have you ignored advice on using password managers? This video is for you. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Every time a big company is hacked, like when Yahoo got hacked in 2016 and exposed the personal info of over 1 billion accounts, experts tell us to stop trying to memorize all of our password and to use a password manager instead. A password manager is basically a virtual safe where you can safely store all of your passwords. Since when you use a password manager you don't have to remember every single password anymore, you can make them really long and complicated. Your passwords are also encrypted so even if your password manager gets hacked, all of the individual passwords stored within are safe from hackers. LastPass vs KeePass vs 1Password: Password Managers pt 1, Basic Step-by-Step Tutorial
In today’s video, I compare LastPass, KeePass, and 1Password password managers. I don’t recommend LastPass, but I do show you how to download and use KeePass and 1Password. It can be difficult for a non-techie to know where to start when thinking about taking back your digital privacy. There is no one right answer because privacy isn’t a switch that is either on or off; it’s a sliding scale – sometimes you’re more private based on your digital habits…and sometimes you’re less. So anywhere you can improve your digital habits is a step toward taking back your privacy. A password manager allows you to use randomly generated, unbreakable passwords (30 characters or more) without ever having to worry about taking up brain space to remember them – simultaneously increasing privacy, security, and convenience. Password managers even allow you to randomize your account usernames (if the site or application will allow you to use something other than your e-mail address), which greatly increases your account security because the username is 50% of the information a hacker needs to access your data. Using a password manager means only having to remember one good password instead of dozens of weak ones. And the great thing is that it is easy for human beings to create very memorable passwords that are impossible for computers to crack. The example “master password” I use in the tutorial video is: “I went skydiving for the first time in 2001.” That password has over 40 characters in it (spaces, punctuation and everything), making it impossible for a computer to guess, but it would be extremely easy to remember because it is (hypothetically) relevant to the actual history of my life. The next logical question is: “Which password manager should I use?” There are really only two criteria for selecting a password manager: 1. Is it secure, and; 2. Will I use it? The most secure password manager in the world is worthless if you stop using it because it’s too inconvenient. I recommend using one of two password managers: KeePass or 1Password. KeePass is a free, open-sources password manager. Its code has been audited by privacy and security experts all over the world, and it is the tool that those experts (and hackers) use themselves. It really is the standard by which every other password manager is judged, and since it is free, it cost you nothing to try it. Its only draw backs (if you can even call them that) are that the user interface looks like a basic computer program built in the early 2000s, and you have to manually transfer your passwords between your devices (such as your computer to your phone), which is easy for anyone to learn to do in a matter of minutes. In fact most privacy and security experts prefer the fact that you have to manually sync your passwords between devices with KeePass because it reduces the chance that passwords may somehow be exposed during the syncing process, and it allows you to only sync the few passwords you might actually need on the device rather than copying the entire database (multiple copies of the database increases the number of opportunities to steal the data and mobile phones are often much less secure that desktop computers). 1Password works in essentially the same way as KeePass – all the encryption and data storage take place on your computer and not in the cloud – but is a proprietary software that requires a monthly subscription. So why would anyone pay every month for 1Password when KeePass is free? In a word: convenience. 1Password has a nice user interface, extensions that build password management into all the popular browsers on the market, and well supported mobile apps on both the iPhone and Android. And it will automatically sync to all these locations through Dropbox, which most people are already familiar with using. I have to admit that I still use 1Password because I bought a lifetime license before it switched to a subscription model and because it works in the Brave web browser, which I love. My only plea is: pick the password manager that is right for you and actually use it. If you do decide to go with 1Password and you use Apple products, please sign up for your subscription using CryptoTech.Solutions’ Apple affiliate link to help support the show at no additional cost to you: https://www.cryptotech.solutions/1password/ Sponsor link: https://www.cryptotech.solutions/nord/ Other links in the tutorial: Privacy tools resource page: https://privacytools.io KeePass: http://keepass.info/ News articles about LastPass hacks: https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2015/06/16/bad-news-lastpass-breached-good-news-you-should-be-ok/ https://betanews.com/2016/01/16/lastpass-lostpass-passwords/ https://it.slashdot.org/story/16/07/27/1342205/lastpass-accounts-can-be-completely-compromised-when-users-visit-sites Tips / Donations: Bitcoin: 1yNUcjgLqgzdGYQYWspJGcnDVHyT4HdmU Dash: XjvWzZjZZfibv25H4E289zy9k7gK9pxc8h

Best Password Manager (offline and free)
VISIT https://www.udemy.com/cyber-security-and-internet-safety/ FOR OUR UDEMY CYBER SECURITY AND INTERNET SAFETY VIDEO TRAINING COURSE! In this video I recommend what I believe is the best password manager (offline version) and how to use it. It's called KeePass and it's free! Well hello my tiny terrors this is Jeff from CompuTerrors and today I'll be going over the best password manager which I believe is KeePass it's spelled K-E-E-P-A-S-S now this is just going to cover the very basics and this is the best offline password manager meaning everything is stored on your computer itself not online later on we'll do other videos for other online password managers so what you do to get it you go to keepass.info which I know that address is weird but the awesome thing about KeePass is it's free it's open source meaning the code that is used to create the program is openly available and people work on it all the time so it's very quick for bugs or things like that to get worked out KeePass 2.30 is the newest version so I just go to download you can click on downloads now there's two different versions there's a classic edition and professional without getting into all the details there's a lot of technical reasons just use the Professional Edition you get more and again it's free and just use there's an installer meaning it will actually install the program on your system itself or as a portable version so you can run this and store your passwords just a file on a USB Drive if you want so you have options I used the one that's the the actual installer so that you just click on this and it should automatically if it doesn't just click on the direct link and then it'll open now I already downloaded it I have installed so I'm just going to close this and then I'll run it so again this will be the basics of how to use KeePass now that first window that came up when I ran it that's because it was searching for an old database I created that's no longer here so again we'll just do a very quick version of this so this is the default window there's no databases open yet now if you even using a password manager like this you'll be completely ahead of the game most people don't like passwords so they'll choose something really simple and in this day and age i mean that's just asking for trouble so you wanna have more complex passwords and the hard part is you can't remember them that's why you have a password manager like KeePass because then you don't have to remember them you just remember the main password to get into this database file that we're going to create and then all your other passwords will be stored so you want to be careful where you you save this database but beyond that as long as you have a strong password to get in there you're much more protected so to create something you just click on new and then this is just asking me where I want to save it I'll just save it on my desktop now again there's gonna be a lot of extra options here but we're just gonna go over the basics so you want to choose a master password this is the password you'll use to get into this password manager database so I'll put this is my super password ok now you can see that you type it in once and then twice it'll show you the quality meaning how difficult this password is to remember or not even that but how how good of a password it is so you want to be closer to the right and not he would definitely be in the green that's a better password now remember this is the main password that you have to remember to get into KeePass it seems like twenty-something characters a long password but this is the only password you have to remember so you want to make it a good one because this is the master password to get into your database of all your other passwords so you could use a technique called chunking it takes a bunch of smaller words and numbers that you do remember very easily and you just add them all together so you could put a pet name and then a number and then maybe a birthdate and then a street address or something like that and just by doing those things as long as you remember the order that those things are in each chunk of the passwords easier but when you add it all together it's much more difficult for people to remember now technically you should still use other characters in a password like dollar signs and hashtags ampersands things like that but these are options to make it easier to remember because I get it I'm an IT person but people hate password so I'm just being more realistic and so you can actually choose passwords that are more difficult but still using simple words the... If you use the same password for every site, anyone who figures out one of your passwords now has all of them. It’s a house of cards, but one way too many people live with.
