They can do a variety of tasks, including putting edge profiling on, like in moldings, they can create different types of joinery by removing material and creating slots for different shapes, and they can even cut out templates. To give you an idea of the different things a router can do, take a quick look at these router bits and they'll give you a sense of what I'm talking about. For example, most of these bits at the top here, are used for creating edge profiles. You can see, there's a variety of different shapes. Some carve out a curve into the wood, called a cove. Some do a round-over. Some will create custom shapes. There's a Roman ogee. There's a whole category, also, of joinery cutting bits. The most common of which is a straight cutting bit, like this, which makes a straight slot. But, you'll also see bits that create wedge shaped slots, or dove tails. There's a whole variety of other ones, as well. If you look at the router bits, you get a sense of the shape that they make. Router bits come in two different sizes, and this is important to understand. It will help you pick router bits, and also determine what kind of router to get. If we look at, for example, these two bits here. These are essentially the same, two bits that do the same function, they both cut out a three quarter inch slot, they're three quarter inches in diameter. But you can see on the bottom, they have two different sized shanks. I want to draw your attention to this, because these are the two most common sized shanks, the quarter inch and the half inch. Most routers can accommodate both sized shanks in their collets, simply by changing out the collet. So, we have two different sized collets. The collet is what holds the bit into the router. You can either use the one that hold the quarter inch bit, or you can use the one that hold the half inch bit. Either way, they both screw into the router at the base, and you're good to go. Let's look at the routers, themselves. Routers have a lot of different controls on them to help make them operate smoothly and safely. I've got two different models of routers out here, to show you. One is called a plunge router. It's basic function is, if you need to start routing in the middle of a piece of wood, you can plunge down in, like a drill press, do your routing, and then plunge back out. So, it's a safe way to plunge down into the wood. The other kind of router that you'll see is a stationary router. A stationary router is the same thing as a plunge router, but it doesn't plunge. So, you put the bit in, and you'll either be working along an edge, so you can come into the edge safely and route away, or you'll come in from the end of the wood and go in, and come out the other side. You can stop in the middle and turn it off, also. So, those two are the basic types of hand-held routers that we have. Either one of these, requires some type of guide system. Neither of these are suitable for free-handing. The router has a very powerful motor on top, and it will try to move out of your hands, if you let it. So, you'll always need guide-rails of some kind; jigs, or guide-rails that go on the router it's self to keep it aligned. The other thing that these routers have in common is variable speed. Most routers are like this. You can change the speed that the bit is rotating. Why would you want to do that? The main reason is that different bits, depending on their size, need to be operated at lower or higher speeds. The larger the bit you have, the lower the speed you're going to want to operate it at. Imagine, essentially, that we're taking out three quarters of an inch of material, versus a quarter inch of material. The router is doing a lot more work to remove more material, and also the bit is spinning faster at the outside of the circle, than this one is. That's the reason we slow down the speed. The bigger router bit is actually moving faster at the outside edge. Usually, your router bit package will tell you the optimum speed to operate it at, so you don't have to know, or memorize that for every bit. The speed can be adjusted on the router bit, up here. There's two different styles that I have here. On this plunge router, it has a dial that goes from one to four. One is the low speed. There's no way you would know what speeds those were, unless you looked in the manual. But, they do correspond pretty closely to what's on this router. This is typical for these size routers. Your low end of speed is about 10,000 RPMs, and the high-end is about 23, or 24,000 RPM. So, dependin

How Routers Work and Basic Setup
Learn the basics of how routers work, and how to setup your network securely. Networking 101 Project Layout: Week 1: Routers Explained Week 2: Basic Router setup + Switching Week 3: Wireless Explained + Review + Wireless Setup Week 4: Upgrading Routers + 3 Router Setup Routers vs. Switches * Both Routers and Switches look for the most efficient path to route data * However, HOW they do it is different * Switches work with physical addresses (i.e. MAC addresses) * Routers work with network addresses (i.e. IP addresses) Let's get basic: * Switches have a table of MAC (Media Access Control) Addresses that let it know where frames should be sent. * This works ok for a network of dozens to a few hundred PCs * However, once you start having THOUSANDS of nodes, a MAC table doesn't work (There's just too many) * Routers: Typically use BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) -- Instead of every device having a table of every device on the Internet, BGP just knows "best routes" -- Every device knows the devices closest to it, and the best way to transit the Internet to get CLOSER to the router that actually has the path to the desired device. The EASIEST way to think of switching & routing is this: -- You use a switch when you are sending/receiving data across your network -- You use a router when you are sending/receiving data BETWEEN networks Home routers are REALLY dumbed-down versions of core routers. (Technically, they're EDGE routers) --- They just need to have enough power and smarts to talk to your ISP's routers. 1. Edge (US) 2. Subscriber Edge (the part of the subscriber's network that talks to the edge routers) 3. Border Router (Routers that talk with other border routers ACROSS networks) 4. Core: The Backbone What basic services does a typical Consumer Router offer? 1. NAT 2. DHCP 3. Firewall (Part of the NAT Functionality) 4. Wireless NAT: (Network Address Translation) * NAT remaps an IP address in one address space, into a different address space * NAT came around because of IPv4 Exhaustion (Way back in the 80's) * We USED to all have devices that had REAL addresses, and we were running out. * NAT allowed us to greatly expand the lifespan of IPv4 because a network really only needed ONE routable address, and everything else was behind the NAT * NAT, DOES have an impact on both the reliability and performance of your connection. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) * It's a way for a client to obtain all the necessary IP configuration parameters when connecting to a network * Before DHCP, we had to input IP config information into each client manually. (AKA "Static IP Addressing") * DHCP uses UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and NOT TCP. (TCP requires a handshake and error checking --- UDP is "connectionless") It's a multi-part process: 1) Discovery: The client broadcasts (again via UDP) a message, "DHCPDISCOVER" on the network to the IP address 2) Offer: The DHCP server recieves the broadcasted discovery message. It then reserves and IP address for that client and sends a "DHCPOFFER" message to the client that contains the client's MAC address // IP Address // Subnet Mask // Lease Duration // Gateway address 3) Request: The client receives the offer and broadcasts back to the server, "DHCPREQUEST" telling it that it will accept the offered address. 4) Acknowledge: The server receives the "DHCPREQUEST" from the client and returns a "DHCPACK" Firewall * The ability to turn off services and close ports * With NAT on an edge router, the Firewall basically serves two functions: - Manage what ports and services you've turned on (and otherwise keep the ports closed) - Map ports to particular IP addresses in your network.

How to Choose and Use a Router
Watch the full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA6LW9wINso General contractor Tom Silva shares his insights on the shop's most versatile portable power tool. (See steps below.) Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Steps for How to Choose and Use a Router: 1. Depending on the router bit used, routers can cut a wide variety of decorative edges, profiles, and woodworking joints. 2. Straight-cutting router bits can cut dadoes, grooves, and rabbets for joining together two boards. 3. A plunge router can cut precise holes like a drill press for shelf pegs or wooden dowels. 4. Rout tongue-and-groove joints into the ends and edges of boards to create tongue-and-groove flooring. 5. Light-duty trim routers are ideal for flush-trimming plastic laminate, veneer, and other thin materials. 6. Don't use large bits in a trim router; you could burn out the motor. 7. Medium-duty fixed-based routers offer a good combination of power and speed. 8. Some routers have variable-speed motors. Use slower speeds when cutting with large-diameter bits. 9. A plunge router has a spring-loaded base that allows you to plunge the bit down into the board, and then release it to pop up out of the cut. 10. Plunge routers are useful for routing inlays, stopped grooves, and holes. 11. Router bits come in dozens of sizes and profiles. 12. Bits come with either a 1/4-inch-diameter shaft or a 1/2-inch-diameter shaft. Match the bit-shank diameter to the collet on the router. 13. Some routers come with both a 1/4-inch and a 1/2-inch collet. 14. The ball-bearing pilot found on some bits rolls along the edge of the board to control the depth of cut. 15. A piloted flush-cutting bit has a ball bearing that rides along a template for making very precise, custom cuts. 16. With the router unplugged, push the router bit all the way into the collet, then pull it out a little bit to provide an expansion space. 17. Tighten the collet with a wrench to securely lock the bit in place. 18. Adjust the depth of cut, then plug in the router. 19. Firmly clamp the board to a workbench. 20. Put on hearing protection and safety goggles. 21. Before switching on the router, be sure the router bit isn't touching the board. 22. Turn on the router, then slowly rout from left to right in a counterclockwise direction. Wireless Routers 101 - Which AC wireless router should you buy ?
See all of my wireless router reviews here: http://lon.tv/routers The wireless router world is getting more confusing as we now have many varieties (and speeds) of wireless AC available. Many routers have four or five different products at the market all at the same time. This is my attempt to try and explain (in plain english) what all of this stuff means. Do you really need a 3x3 AC1900 router? Likely not, given that most of us have 2x2 computers and tablets at the most. And at the end of the day the Internet connections we have will never come close to utilizing the amount of bandwidth most of these routers can provide. But -- if you have an older router, just upgrading to a new one can offers some performance benefits. How to Expand Your Wireless Range Using an Old Router
Check out this video to learn how to configure an old router to expand the wireless in your home, garage, pole barn, or greenhouse. I have used this process for many years both professionally and in my own home. This is a great use for that older router that you may have replaced with a new one or picked up from a garage sale or resale shop. Routers have become almost disposable after a few years so they come cheap. The newer routers will offer a better wireless extension and also better security so if you can find one that is at least 2007 or newer that is preferred. Using an old router to expand your network is a cheap and easy way to at least double the wireless range in your home. It is also a great way to get wireless to outbuildings or other areas that are outside of your home's wireless signal. This method does require that you have an Ethernet cable run from your main wireless router in your home to the location where you would like to setup the second router (access point). In our home I have one wireless access point configured on each floor and staggered from one end of the home to the other. This means that no matter where I ma in the house I can always connect to a nearby access point and have full signal strength. No buffering, no lag, and in most cases speeds as fast as a wired Ethernet connection. Here are the basic steps to follow but I would recommend watching the accompanying video to fully understand the process. 1. Reset router to factory default settings 2. Take note of your current network configuration (192.168.1.X 3. Create a new ip address for the access point (example) 4. plug a computer into the newly reset router 5. log into the router using the default ip - normally 6. Configure the wireless network name and security 7. Turn off DHCP (take away the router's ability to assign ip addresses) 8. Configure the router to the previously picked ip address - (example) 9. Connect the router to an Ethernet cable coming from your main router. Tip - Do not use the "WAN" port at all on this new access point. Now I know that someone is going to say it so I will answer this question up front. Yes, you can just plug the router into your existing setup using the WAN port on the second router without changing any settings on the router. This will work in most cases however you are setting yourself up for problems down the road as this is not the correct way to configure a second wireless router on an existing network. This is what is called double NAT or network address translation and is like having a double firewall. This will not allow any computers connected to the secondary router to communicate with wireless printers, other computers, will block many gaming sites, vpn's and other connections. Although it is easier and may work for basic internet browsing it will be slower and will cause other issues down the road. triton routers review, head to head and features demo
Well, at Crimson Guitars http://www.crimsonguitars.com I use routers, and I use them a LOT! When I was given the chance by http://www.tritontools.com to experience all three of the router models that they make a pack of wild hand tool enthusiasts could not have held me back! Also check out http://www.yandles.co.uk if you want to get a gorgeous new tool today! Triton advertise that theirs is the 'best router in the world!' and, well, that is a bit of a challenge isn't it? In the video I un-box the smallest of the three routers and then walk you through the features of all three and finally put one, the 3 1/4 horse big beast, in the Triton router table. With the revolutionary rack and pinion and fine adjustment that drew me to the Triton range you can be assured of more thoughtful and clever design features throughout the range and in the end, as you could guess by their own claims, Triton have created something special.. I'll let you choose just how special after you've watched the video!
