How to teach Kids | from a Prague kindergarten, part 1 | English for Children

19:53
How to manage 15+ Czech five year old kids in your classroom, if you only speak English? It´s easy, no worries. You need a clear and structured lesson plan, you need to be a leader and you need to show a big warm smile. Use body language too and you will succeed. Children love to be surprised, entertained, they love physical activities and once you do all of it, you can introduce and drill any language you like, even comparatives.

Teach For America: Helping Students Achieve their Dreams

02:01
Of the 16 million kids growing up in poverty in the U.S., only one in three will graduate from high school and just 18 percent of those kids will enter a four-year college. At Teach For America, we’ve spent 25 years working inside and outside the classroom to help improve the odds—and we’re ready to do more. At Teach For America, we recruit remarkable and diverse individuals to become teachers in low-income communities. They commit to teach for two years and are hired by our partner public schools across the country. During these two years they are called corps members. We train and support corps members in the practices of great teachers and leaders. At the end of two years, they use those lessons to choose their path forward. Many stay in the classroom. Others move into politics, school leadership, nonprofit work, advocacy, and more. 12 Most Insane Japanese School Rules You Won’t Believe Actually Exist

08:51
12 Most Insane Japanese School Rules You Won’t Believe Actually Exist ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: miniminter1992.29@gmail.com Education and schooling traditions are wildly different in various parts of the world. What is perfectly normal in the UK may be completely unheard of in Germany, and the rules commonly found in the Japanese education system are certainly not usual in the USA! Japanese schools are notoriously strict and much more standardized than many schools in western countries. Nonetheless, they also net the kind of results that we in the west envy and desire to replicate. There are definitely some rules that you will find hard to believe; the question is, do they contribute to the resounding success of Japan’s education system? Here are 12 Japanese School Rules You Won’t Believe Actually Exist; 12. Kancho-ing the Teacher The word Kancho in itself is a slang version of the word used to denote a medical enema, but refers to a children’s game (believe it or not). Kanchoing is more of a tradition than a rule, but it’s definitely something to be aware of if you plan to teach English in Japan! 11. No Accessories! As you will soon find out, there is often a strict dress code in Japanese schools, but there is also a rule against using accessories to change your appearance! Students are prohibited from using colored contact lenses, dying their hair, and having unusual piercings. In fact, some schools even ban the painting of nails and the grooming of eyebrows! 10. Students are Prohibited from Dating and Having Open Relationships! Japan takes the education of its youngsters very seriously and brooks no distractions – even from other students! In Junior High Schools in particular, this is a view which is enforced with regulation. Junior High students are not allowed to date romantically or enter into an open relationship at all! 9. Cell Phones Are Not Allowed to be Used Inside the School The theme of education-first is one that can be seen in all Japanese school rules. As such, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that cell phones are also prohibited during lessons. However, you might be shocked to learn that they are not allowed to be used anywhere in the building at all. 8. Strict Dress Code Only twenty percent of schools in the USA have a dress code (and they are usually private schools), but in Japan, almost all schools from Junior High level upwards have a strict uniform to which students must adhere. 7. Punctuality Good timekeeping is a focus in pretty much all schooling systems, of course, but in Japan, it is taken very seriously! Children are expected to be in school at 8:30am on the button, and if they are more than five minutes late, you can be sure they will be punished to a certain degree. 6. Respectful Greetings Japanese culture is one which focusses heavily on respect; respect for authority figures and elders, as well as each other, is a key part of this for school children. As such, Japanese school children greet their teachers with a bow at the beginning of their lessons and say goodbye in the same manner. 5. The Sasumata American school children will no doubt be familiar with intruder drills, but in Japan, they take matters one step further by ensuring that there is something on hand to defend against violent intruders. 4. No Substitutes Can you imagine leaving a classroom full of American Junior High students unattended for a full period? Sounds like every teacher’s worst nightmare, right? Well, in Japan, this is commonplace. 3. Mandatory Swimming Lessons Japan is an island nation after all! Not only is swimming a part of the curriculum in Japan, but most schools actually have their own swimming pool to use. Students will swim as a part of their weekly education and are required to learn how to swim a minimum distance. 2. No Janitors Part of the culture of respect instilled in Japanese children includes caring for their surroundings and taking responsibility for their actions. This is why you won’t find janitors in any Japanese schools! 1. Summer Bummer Perhaps the biggest difference between Japanese and American schools, however, is the way summer vacation is structured. First and foremost, the vacation is only five weeks long. Collective Leadership - Teach For America

02:01
America’s facing a stark reckoning. The racism and hatred on display have been simmering under the surface for a long time and it’s time to confront it. Students deserve leaders who understand this truth and who have the courage to live up to the american ideals of equal opportunity and justice for all. You’ll find these leaders at Teach For America. we are fifty-six thousand strong and together with our students and all who support them we strive to create the world as it should be. we come to this work from different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. for most of us, TFA wasn’t our plan. we signed up to have impact but we didn’t know exactly where that choice would lead. Then we met our students and their families. And looking back, we know that this was never just about two years. From wherever we are, we are all fighting because of our uncompromising belief in every child. Because we’ve seen their potential come alive in our classrooms. TFA is among the most diverse, integrated organizations in the country. Being part of this community means being connected to perspectives that are different from your own. every day, we recommit to working across lines of difference in pursuit of enduring change. this is the foundation of collective leadership. It’s what this moment in history requires. Twenty years from now, our children will ask us about this dark hour. I plan to stand with you and say we were builders, that we were part of rebuilding America into a more powerful, just, inclusive nation. This is hard work. it’s the work of a lifetime. It’s what we signed up for and we will keep at it until the work is done.

How you can be good at math, and other surprising facts about learning | Jo Boaler | TEDxStanford

12:58
You have probably heard people say they are just bad at math, or perhaps you yourself feel like you are not “a math person.” Not so, says Stanford mathematics education professor Jo Boaler, who shares the brain research showing that with the right teaching and messages, we can all be good at math. Not only that, our brains operate differently when we believe in ourselves. Boaler gives hope to the the mathematically fearful or challenged, shows a pathway to success, and brings into question the very basics of how our teachers approach what should be a rewarding experience for all children and adults. Jo Boaler is a professor of mathematics education at Stanford and the co-founder of YouCubed, which provides resources and ideas to inspire and excite students about mathematics. She is also the author of the first massive open online course on mathematics teaching and learning. Her book Experiencing School Mathematics won the Outstanding Book of the Year award for education in Britain. A recipient of a National Science Foundation "early career award"' she was recently named by BBC as one of the eight educators changing the face of education. A school that builds with community

08:18
When Teach For America alumnus Joe Manko became the principal of Liberty Elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, he envisioned a school that worked “hand in hand with the community.” Rather than operating as an autonomous institution, Manko felt Liberty should be a place that was integral to the neighborhood and welcoming to its residents of all generations. Today, thanks to over 1,800 hours of volunteerism each month, Liberty is able to provide extensive multi-generational after-school programming and wrap-around services—including a community run food pantry. This deep partnership with the community not only provides students and their families with access to a rich and holistic education but also enables a strong support system for all. Watch the video above to learn how Liberty is redefining what it means to be a community school, and what collective leadership looks like in action—with parents, teachers and community members all working together toward a shared vision for their children, school, and community.

The consciousness gap in education - an equity imperative | Dorinda Carter Andrews | TEDxLansingED

15:07
In this talk, Dorinda Carter Andrews challenges us to consider how gaps in critical consciousness and mindsets for adults and students in schools prevent us from providing equitable schooling experiences for all students. Specifically, Carter Andrews urges educators to consider how increased critical consciousness about the role of race and culture in teaching and learning can be fostered through educator professional development and student curriculum and can ultimately strengthen teacher-student relationships. A shifted focus on closing consciousness gaps can address the equity imperative embedded in the larger discourse about achievement gaps. On February 11, Dorinda received the MSU 2014 Outreach Scholarship Community Partner Award for her collaboration with school districts to close achievement gaps. Further, on March 1, she received the Alumni of Color Achievement Award at the 2014 Alumni of Color Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dorinda Carter Andrews is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University where she teaches courses on racial identity development, urban education, critical multiculturalism, and critical race theory. Dr. Carter Andrews is a Core Faculty member in the African American and African Studies program and a Faculty Leader in the Urban Educators Cohort Program, a program designed to prepare MSU pre-service students for teaching careers in urban contexts.

Expelled From Every Other School: Last Chance High (Episode 1)

27:20
On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth — the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders. Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital. In the first episode of the eight-part original VICE News series we are introduced to two 14-year-old Montefiore students, Cortez and Crystal, who were sent to the school after violently attacking teachers. Cortez's mother blames the boy's father, who is serving a life sentence for murder. Crystal has stabbed her classmates and been caught shoplifting since arriving to Montefiore — which has left her mother on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Though the task can be overwhelming, the Montefiore staff never gives up trying to reach the city's most difficult and volatile student population. How to Handle Misbehaving Students: "Maintaining Classroom Discipline" 1947 McGraw-Hill Films

13:45
more at http://quickfound.net/ "Good and bad methods of disciplining inappropriate classsroom behavior." NEW VERSION with improved video & sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDof1TceN2w Public domain film from the Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classroom_management Classroom management is a term used by teachers to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students. The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behavior. It is possibly the most difficult aspect of teaching for many teachers; indeed experiencing problems in this area causes some to leave teaching altogether. In 1981 the US National Educational Association reported that 36% of teachers said they would probably not go into teaching if they had to decide again. A major reason was "negative student attitudes and discipline".Solving Discipline Problems Charles H Wolfgang and Carl D Glickman 1986 (Allyn and Bacon) According to Moskowitz & Hayman (1976), once a teacher loses control of their classroom, it becomes increasingly more difficult for them to regain that control.Moskowitz, G., & Hayman, J. L., Jr. (1976). Success strategies of inner-city teachers: A year-long study. Journal of Educational Research, 69, 283-289. Also, research from Berliner (1988) and Brophy & Good (1986) shows that the time that teacher has to take to correct misbehavior caused by poor classroom management skills results in a lower rate of academic engagement in the classroom.Berliner, D. C. (1988). Effective classroom management and instruction: A knowledge base for consultation. In J. L. Graden, J. E. Zins, & M. J. Curtis (Eds.), Alternative educational delivery systems: Enhancing instructional options for all students (pp. 309-325). Washington, DC: National Association of School Psychologists.Brophy, J. E., & Good, T. L. (1986). Teacher behavior and student achievement. In M. C. Wittrock (Ed.), Handbook of research on teaching (3rd ed., pp. 328-375). New York: Macmillan. From the student's perspective, effective classroom management involves clear communication of behavioral and academic expectations as well as a cooperative learning environment.Allen, J.D. (1986). Classroom management: students' perspectives, goals, and strategies. American Educational Research Journal, 23, 437-459. Classroom management is closely linked to issues of motivation, discipline and respect. Methodologies remain a matter of passionate debate amongst teachers; approaches vary depending on the beliefs a teacher holds regarding educational psychology. A large part of traditional classroom management involves behavior modification, although many teachers see using behavioral approaches alone as overly simplistic. Many teachers establish rules and procedures at the beginning of the school year. According to Gootman (2008), rules give students concrete direction to ensure that our expectation becomes a reality.Gootman, Marilyn E. The caring teacher's guide to discipline : helping students learn self-control, responsibility, and respect, K-6. 2008, p.36... They also try to be consistent in enforcing these rules and procedures. Many would also argue for positive consequences when rules are followed, and negative consequences when rules are broken. There are newer perspectives on classroom management that attempt to be holistic. One example is affirmation teaching, which attempts to guide students toward success by helping them see how their effort pays off in the classroom. It relies upon creating an environment where students are successful as a result of their own efforts.Pintrich, P.R., & De Groot E. V. (1990). Motivational and self-regulated learning components of classroom academic performance. Journal of Educational Psychology, 82, 33-40. By creating this type of environment, students are much more likely to want to do well. This transforms a classroom into a community of well-behaved and self-directed learners... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assertive_discipline Assertive discipline is an approach to classroom management developed by Lee and Marlene Canter. It involves a high level of teacher control in the class. It is also called the "take-control" approach to teaching, as the teacher controls their classroom in a firm but positive manner...

From 'summer slump' to 'summer jump'..

06:13
http://www.teachforall.org/network-learning This summer, 340 students in the USA replaced a three month reading loss with a 2.8 month reading gain, doubling their annual reading progress in just five weeks. Weekly family workshops averaged 91% parent attendance compared to 10% of some parent events. By training students, parents and teachers to collaborate, Springboard puts kids on a trajectory that closes the reading achievement gap by fourth grade. But how did they do this?

Inside was a game I'd never heard of before. It looked pretty dated, but since it was free, I booted up my ancient Hewlett Packard PC. I put in the disc... It started to run... Then braced myself for educational fun! WeLcOmE tO BaLdI’S BaSicS iN eDucAtiON aNd LeArNinG! All I need is seven notebooks To break out of this game. Trapped inside of Baldi's Basics, And Baldi’s pretty unnerving… i HeaR eVeRY dOoR yOU oPeN! I dared not doubt his claim... I found the next notebook, on a desk before long. “I gEt mORe AnGRy eAcH tIMe yOu aNSwEr wRoNG.” The numbers were jumbled, indiscernibly math… I knew from the smacking I’d incurred Baldi’s wrath! Out in the hall, I heard a loud crack... Baldi was there, and he was on the attack! Can't escape from Baldi’s Basics! I can’t get past It’s a Bully- GoNnA tAkE a PiEcE oF yOuR cAnDy! Now I'm as good as dead! Let me out of Baldi’s Basics, for love of all that is holy! Should've lit this game on fire and gone right back to bed! I aM cOmInG! I sEe YoU! What the fudge does this thing do? It closed in fast and cornered me- I’Ll hUg YoU fOr eTeRniTy! A student named Play Time appeared in my way. She pulled our her jump rope and said “LeT’S pLaY!” I tried to escape, but Baldi burst through the door... ...so I began skipping rope as I had never before! One… Two… Oops! You messed up! One… Two… Oops! You messed up! One… Two… Three… Four… Aw, that makes me sad… It’S sWeEpIn’ TiMe!!! I ran like the wind, and heard the Principal call as I dashed through the doorway, “No running in the halls.” His finger was pointed, his expression quite stern. “Detention for you,” he said. “When will you learn…” The timer ticked down… The smacking drew near… Two seconds more before Baldi’d be here-! Out of time in Baldi’s Basics, And Baldi’s one step behind me! Only missing one more notebook, But Sweeping Time appeared!… No way out of Baldi’s Basics, And Baldi’s certain to find me! Can’t escape or use the soda, And there ain’t no notebook here! "WHERE IS THE SEVENTH NOTEBOOK?!"
