A state-by-state look at the history of U.S. immigration by country of origin as President Trump blocks immigrants and refugees from Iraq, Syria, Iran, etc. and vows to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. Try Lynda.com for free: https://www.lynda.com/tdc Subscribe to TDC! https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ Twitter for curated news http://www.twitter.com/thedailyconvo Facebook for daily posts http://www.facebook.com/thedailyconversation Written, Narrated, and Produced by Bryce Plank Video Editing and Animation by Robin West Information source: http://pewrsr.ch/1YKcNEY Music: "Sunday" by Otis McDonald - YT Audio Library Script: This is a state by state look at how immigration to America has changed over time. In 1850, the vast majority of newcomers were from Ireland and Germany. In the 1860’s the labor shortages during the Civil War created strong demand for immigrant labor, nearly doubling the foreign born population in a decade. 1870 saw Mexico become the top country of origin in much of the Southwest, while British immigrants preferred the rocky mountain territories. The 1880 census showed that the Chinese were coming in large numbers. Many took dangerous jobs in the mines or on railroad building crews. For the next century immigrants from Canada crossing the southern border would be the largest group settling in many of the northernmost American states. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act blocked the arrival of large numbers of Asian immigrants for much of the next century. Unfortunately the overall microdata for the 1890 census were destroyed in a 1921 fire at the Department of Commerce. So fast-forward to 1900, the turn of the century, when the territorial boundaries of the continental United States were settled. For the first time Norwegians, Swedes, and Italians were the largest groups coming to South Dakota, Minnesota and Louisiana, respectively. 1910 shows us how quickly things can change, with large numbers of Russians and Italians arriving, the only state where Ireland was the top country of origin was tiny Delaware. With the American population exceeded 100 million in the 1920 census, there were equal numbers of German, Italian, and Russian born immigrants. Many had fled Europe to escape the horrors of World War I. By 1930 the industrial revolution was in full swing, and the country was growing rapidly from within, so the percent of foreign born fell. And, for the first time since 1850, Mexico was the dominant country of origin for new arrivals to California. By 1940, the quotas and other congressional measures passed in the previous decade to restrict immigration sharply cut the foreign born population to below 9%. 1950 saw the effects of the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, as Chinese immigrants were finally welcomed back. Greeks were the largest group arriving in South Carolina. When Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, the year before the 1960 census, Canadians simply crossed the border to immigrate to The Last Frontier, but Filipinos crossed an entire ocean to become The Aloha State’s largest group. By 1970, the percentage of foreign born reached an all-time low. And with immigrants arriving from a wider range of countries, Italy was the only nation that had sent more than a million people. In 1980, after Congress began granting more visas to people from the Western Hemisphere, the number of states where Mexico was the top country of origin doubled in a decade, becoming the dominant foreign born population in the entire country. And in 1990 America began to look like the diverse country we live in today. Mexico was tops in 18 states, Dominicans were the largest group coming to New York, and South Korea and Southeast Asian nations were the leading countries of origin in seven states. In the year 2000 census the number of Mexican-born immigrants surpassed nine million. It’s also notable that India was the top country of origin in three states. And the 2010 census reveals exactly why America is quickly becoming so diverse: only five states - all of them bordering Canada - received the most immigrants from a majority white country. Yet from a clampdown on 'illegal' Latino immigrants, to a wave of hate crimes, this Latino expansion is experiencing some acute growing pains. "Latinos are coming. They're going to be recognised" Geraldo Rivera, one of the most famous Latino stars in America says. The Latino community is exploding, with the number of Latinos in the US expected to triple between 2005-2050. "And they will change the face of America", Rivera states. We travel through the States meeting successful Latino personalities, in all walks of life from acting to politics. We see signs of hope and pride, as they demand their right to be counted in society. "Who is to say who this country belongs to?", questions a famous actress, "this is my country." Yet hate crimes and rapidly expanding Hispanic gang culture hint that the expansion is not going to be easy. Fear, resentment and suspicion follow close behind in its wake. A look at the future of the United States of America through demographic data projections. With charts and graphs, we examine the two big transformations happening in the US: our population is becoming non-white, and it’s aging in record numbers. That bulge getting older is the baby boom generation, like my parents -- and probably yours too -- born in the prosperous economic time period after the allied victory in WWII. For the first time in history, a society’s age pyramid will turn into a rectangle. Living longer and having less kids are the ingredients for an older population. Other highly developed countries are also entering this uncharted territory in human history when there’ll be almost as many of us over 85 as there are under 5. One major consequence, there’ll be a lot less people working to support a lot more retirees, which means we’ll have to work more efficiently. The good news is that we’re already well on our way to making that transition. But with 10,000 baby boomers a day turning 65 between now and the year 2030, that change is happening fast. When Social Security began, there were 42 workers for every person receiving benefits. Today, that ratio is 3-1 and it will be just 2 workers to every 1 beneficiary soon enough. Another piece of good news though is that the percentage of Americans who think this creates a strong conflict between the different generations is relatively low. Here is how the four current adult generations feel about a few key topics. Millennials and Gen-Xers are much more politically liberal, as seen in our support for President Obama, our strong support of marijuana legalization, and same-sex marriage. As recently as 2000 though, there wasn’t much difference in the way young and old voted. But after Bush and the rise of Obama, the difference between the parties has never been clearer. When it comes to religion, nearly twice as many Millennials as their parents say they have no affiliation. Many of these trends are being driven by the Internet, and the fact that we Millennials are the final generation that will remember life without the online world. Today’s young people are digital natives. The other factor that’s driving our open-mindedness is our diversity, which gets us to the other big transformation happening now in America., one that’s like watching a black and white painting turn into a multi-colored rainbow. In 2010, 64% of Americans identified as white, down 21% from 50 years earlier, and projected to be just 43% in 2060, with the country becoming less than half white around 2045. Immigration is driving this. A century ago, 9 in 10 immigrants were from Europe. Now, 8 in 10 are either Hispanic or Asian. And since immigrants tend to have a lot more kids than the rest of us, by 2050, 37% of Americans will either be direct, first-generation immigrants, or the children of immigrants--the highest number in modern American history. The other brush painting this rainbow is interracial relationships. In 1960, 2.4% of marriages were interracial, a practice that was actually illegal in a third of the states then. Today, more than 15% of us are marrying across racial lines. For the results, look no further than our current President, along with many of our most well-known celebrities. Looking forward, as America continues to become more diverse and accepting of the differences among us, that’ll hopefully help us gain a greater ability to join the rest of the world in confronting the biggest challenges left to us to solve over the next 50 years. Battles like climate change, poverty, hunger, disease, the spread of weapons of mass destruction, and cyber crime, are all issues that transcend international borders, requiring cooperation between many different kinds of people.

The United States is no longer a majority white, Christian country, and that is already beginning to have profound social and political implications. At 45 percent of the population, white Christians are a shrinking demographic—and the backlash from many members of the group against the increasing diversification of America has been swift and bitter. “People fight like that when they are losing a sense of place, a sense of belonging, and a sense of the country that they understand and love,” says Robert P. Jones, the author of 'The End of White Christian America,' in this animated interview. “How do they reengage in public life when they can’t be the majority?”

Los Angeles, with a population at the 2010 United States Census of 3,792,621, is the most populous city in the state of California, and the second most populous in the United States, after New York City. It has an area of 468.67 square miles (1,213.8 km2), and is located in Southern California. Often known by its initials L.A., the city is the focal point of the larger Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metropolitan statistical area, which contains 12,828,837 people as of 2010, and is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world and the second largest in the United States. Los Angeles is also the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated and one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States, while the entire Los Angeles area itself has been recognized as the most diverse of the nation's largest cities. The city's inhabitants are referred to as "Angelenos". Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican--American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. Nicknamed the City of Angels, Los Angeles is a world center of business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, and education. It is home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields and is one of the most substantial economic engines within the United States. Los Angeles has been ranked the third richest city and fifth most powerful and influential city in the world. The Los Angeles combined statistical area (CSA) has a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $831 billion (as of 2008), making it the third largest economic center in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. As the home base of Hollywood, it is also known as the "Entertainment Capital of the World," leading the world in the creation of television and stage production, motion pictures, video games, and recorded music. The importance of the entertainment business to the city has led many celebrities to call Los Angeles and its surrounding suburbs home. Additionally, Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics. ( Wikipedia )

If you love all kinds of weather then Maine is for you. Locals say in the year you get every kind of weather known to man and that instead of 4 seasons, Maine has 10. The environment is about as good as it gets, and Mainers are healthy people. Acadia National Park has got everything that a lover of the outdoors could ever need. The oldest eastern national park has hiking trails, large granite peaks, some of the tallest mountains on the US Atlantic coast. If you love you're food to be posh, then you won't be disappointed by Maine's Lobster, often said to be the best in the world. Although it's economy doesn't compare to states like Texas, it is still a beautifully relaxing place to live and is one of the best at caring for seniors. 4) New Hampshire Yet another New England state ranks high because the quality of life is solid in the Granite State. The crime rate is very low, the environment is clean, residents are healthy and it's health care is one of the best. But like some of its neighbors, the state could use some more things to do, but then again if there are too many attractions you do sacrifice it's peaceful atmosphere. It's economy is also strong, ranked 9th in the US in 2014, so there is money to be made. Overall New Hampshire has a very good balance, and balance makes for a good quality of life. 3) Minnesota Residents of the North Star State pride themselves on being nice, which helps explain why this is such a livable state year after year. Maybe it's the rough winters, maybe it's the renowned Mayo Clinic, but Minnesotans are a hardy bunch as this is one of the healthiest states. From the cosmopolitan Twin Cities to the rugged North Woods, the state has something for just about everyone. Overall it ranks highly in pretty much every category such as quality of life, economy, cost of doing business, Infrastructure & education. It is a good all rounder, and just like New Hampshire it has a very good balance. While there are states that offer a lot more & you can live much better if you have the money, states with a better balance offer a higher quality of life for the overall population rather than just a select few. 2) Vermont Sealing New England's dominance in this category, the Green Mountain State reveals the nation's lowest violent crime rate. Vermonters are again in excellent health, fit and trim, with good healthcare but also it offers some of greatest farmers markets in the U.S. Know for its excellent beer, cheese, and of course Maple products. The environment is pristine, and the state is welcoming and inclusive. No matter where you're from or what you're beliefs are, Vermont offers equality for everyone. There's no surprise that Vermont has the second best quality of life in the U.S. 1) Hawaii The Aloha State achieves a near perfect Quality of Life score, with the nation's healthiest population and the cleanest environment. Of course it's amazing weather & the fact that if you live there you're basically in what most people would consider paradise 365 days a year. Residents are protected by strong anti-discrimination laws, and you may never run out of things to see and do. Hawaii is all about just living, it's not the best place to start a tech company, or to make million in any industry, but it is recognized as the best place to live if you just want to live. Realistically you will most likely already need quite a bit of money to live in Hawaii, as it isn't cheap. But should you be fortunate enough to afford to live there, you may never want to leave. D'Amico explains that as of 2010 more than 1.6 million people were serving jail sentences in America. Professor D'Amico suggests that "prisons are not what we think about when we think of America, and they shouldn't have to be." According to D'Amico, a free country should not have 1.6 million people in prison, and a fiscally responsible country cannot afford to. As Prof. D'Amico points out, it is time for Americans to recognize that the U.S. criminal justice system is desperately in need of reform. Learn More: 1. Data in this video comes from Global Insight's report to the United States Conference of Mayors and The Council on Metro Economies and the New American City. According to the report, economic growth in US metropolitan areas in the coming decades will test their infrastructures. Employment and population are two major drivers for congestion-related costs. Over the next decade, the 15 metros with the largest increases in employment will be adding at least a quarter of a million jobs each. The strain on current transportation infrastructure cannot be understated as 12 of these 15 metros already rank among the 15 highest in congestion per commuter. In addition to employment growth, which will put further strain on rush hour commutes, general population gains will also contribute to congestion. Population growth will be highest in the South, including Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Miami - four of the top five largest population gainers through 2020. Over the longer-term, the picture is not any better. Total metro area population will grow by 32% from 2012-2042 and will be especially fast in some of the nation's largest metros. Population will advance by over 50% in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, Denver, San Antonio, and by over 80% in Phoenix, Riverside, and Orlando. Houston and Dallas already rank among the most congested metros; if there is not significant investment in infrastructure congestion costs will be astronomical and will stifle long-term economic potential.

Thanks to Visually (http://Visual.ly) for facilitating the creation of this video, to http://youtube.com/kurzgesagt for the animation, and to The Prison Policy Initiative for research help and fact checking. (http://www.prisonpolicy.org). It wasn't easy to pick this topic, but I believe that America's 40-year policy of mass incarceration is deeply unethical, not very effective, and promotes the security of the few at the expense of the many. It's hard for me, as a person who was born into privilege, to imagine the challenges convicted criminals face, often for crimes that are utterly non-violent. If you're feeling like you want to do something about this, I'm mostly just making this video as an informational resource and to encourage people to think of felons not as bad, scary people but just as people. The people at The Prison Policy Initiative were very helpful in the creation of this video and if you want to learn more about their work and how to get involved go to http://www.prisonpolicy.org

North Korea's manpower is half the size of United States man power. United States has a population that has 120 million people fit for service. That means almost 40% of The United States population (316 million) could serve in the army. 1.4 million people are currently active personal and additional 850,000 are in the reserve. However if both sides were to account for their reserve personnel, North Korea would have a manpower that is 2.5 bigger than the US. But manpower is just the tip of both countries armies. The main weapons to consider are the land units. North Korea has 1600 Self-Propelled Guns, 3,500 Towed Artillery and 700 Multiple-Launch Rocket Systems while the US has SPGs 1,934, Towed-Artillery: 1,791, MLRSs: 1,330. In the air, United States beats North Korea without a doubt. NK has only 940 aircrafts compared to the US's 13,700. The most popular one that the Americans use is f-16 Fighting Falcon. The F-16 was developed in the states. In the sea, United States loses 2:1. But only in numbers. The US has the strongest Navel Power: 10 Aircraft Carriers, 15 Frigates, 62 Destroyers, 72 Submarines, 13 Costal Defense Crafts, and 13 Mine Warfares. At the end of the day, United States could end this war in a blink. The US has over 5000 Nuclear Warheads. If it wanted, it could destroy the whole world. It's 'enemy' in this case has 0 confirmed warheads that could reach the coast of North America. And let's say that the war did start and the US decided to not use the atomic bomb, they would still win since they have their own oil reserves. The opposition has to relay on imported oil and the US could have easily disrupted these trades. So who do you think would win this war? Do you think North Korea has a chance or do you think it would have been destroyed by The United States? Let us know in the comments and if you think our assessment is wrong, don't hesitate to point out how!
