Watch a map of the United States of America draw itself, where each state is drawn in the order that it entered into the union. The use of a time line, color, and time give three different representations of the order that the states joined. It illuminates several historical facts, including that the East Coast started the union, California was relatively early to join, and West Virginia was relatively late, relative to their geographic locations. Please feel free to use this video in a history lesson for your students. To learn more about the software I used to create this video, visit http://doceri.com.

The McDonalds Map As you know, maps can be used to illustrate many types of interesting data, but perhaps none as important as this one, which shows how far you are away from a McDonalds. Yes, that’s right, those Golden Arches aren’t too far away from you no matter where you are in the continental United States, and with more than 13,000 restaurants you are never more than 115 miles away from one. Can you guess where that might be??? 9. Fleas America is a nation of animal lovers, with more than 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats being kept as pets, let alone the numerous other creatures that keep their human companions company. Along with our favourite friends, though, come unwanted companions, like fleas. They can transmit diseases to animals and humans, and can be an irritating presence in the home. They, like other insects, are more active during certain weather conditions, though, and this is where this next map comes in. 8. Murder and Manslaughter Murder and Manslaughter are, unfortunately, things that happen around the world, and the US is no different. You may be surprised to know the areas with the highest mortality rates due to these reasons, though, and, conversely, the places that are the safest. 7. Home Ownership Home ownership is one of the pillars of the American dream. Sure, not everyone aspires to buying their own house, but a lot of Americans do. This first map shows the areas where home ownership is highest and lowest, based on data from the last census. For the purposes of gathering the information, ownership is defined as where the person or people who own a property also live in it. The darker the colour blue, the higher the percentage. 6. Chlamydia Sexually transmitted diseases are a part of modern life but, despite the warnings and efforts at preventing their spread, an estimated 20 million Americans contract a new infection every year. At any one time, it’s thought that 110 million residents in the US has an STD, with Chlamydia being by far the most common. 5. Gun Ownership Gun ownership is a right protected by the Second Amendment, and you don’t need me to tell you the controversy over this right now. There’s no denying it, though, America is a nation of gun lovers- more so than any other country in the planet- but it’s not the case in every state. 30 % of American adults say they own a gun, and this map shows the percentage of people who live in each state that have at least one. While some numbers may seem obvious, others are quite surprising. 4. Most Remembered States It’s the dreaded test that every school child faces, to name as many of the states as they can. With 50 to choose from, there are a number of ways to remember them all, if you want you can look up the song!! How many can you remember off the top of your head?? 3. Poverty Across America, 12.4 % of residents are classified as living in poverty. While many more may experience financial hardship, this is a definition linked to disposable income and the ability to maintain what is seen as a reasonable standard of living. Living in poverty in the US, means households that live on less than $2 per day before government benefits. 2. Immigration America was built on immigration, and our nation is comprised of an amazing blend of people and cultures from around the world. With so much talk of the issue at the moment, it may surprise you where the majority of immigrants for each state come from. This map shows you in more detail. More than 500,000 immigrants move to the US each year, and they contribute to the country in countless ways. 1. Racial Dot Map This final map aims to show the geographic distribution, population density, and racial diversity of people in America based upon data collected in the most recent Census. The image is generated by placing one dot on the map for each person, each being colour coded by race. This not only shows where the highest population centres are, but also the cultural make-up of the people who live there. After a lot of practice and a childhood with my head in an atlas, I managed to complete a map of the Lower 48 states - drawn in 8 minutes (sped up 200% here) - Starting with Kansas as it's smack-bang in the middle, the western states are fairly easy as they are all mostly straight perpendicular lines. Then it's basically a matter of plotting the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and progressing east - northeast towards New England. Straight borders are easy (TN - NC with KY and VA to the north and MS-AL-GA to the south) also PA has mostly straight borders. It's a neat party trick and not without a lot of practice, so please, Enjoy!

Ever wondered why Michigan has two pieces? How about why Alaska isn't connected to the rest of the United States? The state borders are a lot weirder than they first appear, and often simple river borders will have crazy zig-zags that seem to arbitrarily cross the river. When rivers shape, borders don't, leaving states with strange pieces on the wrong side of the river. Some states like Oklahoma and West Virgina have bizarre panhandles, and Kentucky even has a part cut off my Missouri. Its a strange border situation called an exclave, which is when a part of a the state is only reachable by land through other states or countries. Virginia also has the eastern shore which is strangley is on the other side of the Chesapeake bay. Other bizarre borders include New York and New Jersey, where Liberty island and Ellis island are weirdly part of New York but are surrounded by New Jersey waters. Even stranger is that New York only owns a small peice of ellis island. The island was expanded, but the new land was over New Jersey borders, so it stayed new jersey. Leaving New York with a bizzare enclave on an new jersey island. Another weird border is that Delaware has some land on New Jersey's side of the Delaware river. This strange situation is because inside Delaware's 12 mile circle, the border is the high water mark of the river, so when the river was filled in the new land became Delaware. A state-by-state look at the history of U.S. immigration by country of origin as President Trump blocks immigrants and refugees from Iraq, Syria, Iran, etc. and vows to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. Try Lynda.com for free: https://www.lynda.com/tdc Subscribe to TDC! https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ Twitter for curated news http://www.twitter.com/thedailyconvo Facebook for daily posts http://www.facebook.com/thedailyconversation Written, Narrated, and Produced by Bryce Plank Video Editing and Animation by Robin West Information source: http://pewrsr.ch/1YKcNEY Music: "Sunday" by Otis McDonald - YT Audio Library Script: This is a state by state look at how immigration to America has changed over time. In 1850, the vast majority of newcomers were from Ireland and Germany. In the 1860’s the labor shortages during the Civil War created strong demand for immigrant labor, nearly doubling the foreign born population in a decade. 1870 saw Mexico become the top country of origin in much of the Southwest, while British immigrants preferred the rocky mountain territories. The 1880 census showed that the Chinese were coming in large numbers. Many took dangerous jobs in the mines or on railroad building crews. For the next century immigrants from Canada crossing the southern border would be the largest group settling in many of the northernmost American states. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act blocked the arrival of large numbers of Asian immigrants for much of the next century. Unfortunately the overall microdata for the 1890 census were destroyed in a 1921 fire at the Department of Commerce. So fast-forward to 1900, the turn of the century, when the territorial boundaries of the continental United States were settled. For the first time Norwegians, Swedes, and Italians were the largest groups coming to South Dakota, Minnesota and Louisiana, respectively. 1910 shows us how quickly things can change, with large numbers of Russians and Italians arriving, the only state where Ireland was the top country of origin was tiny Delaware. With the American population exceeded 100 million in the 1920 census, there were equal numbers of German, Italian, and Russian born immigrants. Many had fled Europe to escape the horrors of World War I. By 1930 the industrial revolution was in full swing, and the country was growing rapidly from within, so the percent of foreign born fell. And, for the first time since 1850, Mexico was the dominant country of origin for new arrivals to California. By 1940, the quotas and other congressional measures passed in the previous decade to restrict immigration sharply cut the foreign born population to below 9%. 1950 saw the effects of the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, as Chinese immigrants were finally welcomed back. Greeks were the largest group arriving in South Carolina. When Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, the year before the 1960 census, Canadians simply crossed the border to immigrate to The Last Frontier, but Filipinos crossed an entire ocean to become The Aloha State’s largest group. By 1970, the percentage of foreign born reached an all-time low. And with immigrants arriving from a wider range of countries, Italy was the only nation that had sent more than a million people. In 1980, after Congress began granting more visas to people from the Western Hemisphere, the number of states where Mexico was the top country of origin doubled in a decade, becoming the dominant foreign born population in the entire country. And in 1990 America began to look like the diverse country we live in today. Mexico was tops in 18 states, Dominicans were the largest group coming to New York, and South Korea and Southeast Asian nations were the leading countries of origin in seven states. In the year 2000 census the number of Mexican-born immigrants surpassed nine million. It’s also notable that India was the top country of origin in three states. And the 2010 census reveals exactly why America is quickly becoming so diverse: only five states - all of them bordering Canada - received the most immigrants from a majority white country. Why do we only have one state named after a president? That wasn't the original plan - there were several attempts at naming states after founding fathers that failed. Let's discuss those as well as a few other proposed breakups. Learn your states and capitals with this catchy song by Macho Nacho and Mouth Trumpet - known as "Musical Stew". (My 10 year old son did all the video work). Lyrics are available at http://www.musicalstew.com/states.html. We acknowledge the few spelling errors. My son's editor (that's me) didn't vet this out well enough. Please excuse it. I'd upload a corrected version but don't want to start my counter from zero.
