Why the Cortex-A76 and Mali-G76 are important for 2019 - Gary explains

954 ratings | 16711 views
Arm recently announced three new designs: a new CPU core, the Cortex-A76; a new GPU, the Mali-G76; and a new video processor, the Mali-V76. All three components will play important roles in devices for 2019 — not only smartphones, but also Arm-based Windows 10 laptops. apple would rather make a paper thin laptop than giving all day battery life
Mario Ray Mahardhika (5 days ago)
Despite development is Windows oriented, Linux community would be very happy with this. I might buy one eventually.
lvlaple4Ever (6 days ago)
@Gary Explains Will the A76 be able to use all 8 cores simultaneously like the Apple A11 with its performance controller though?
Gary Explains (4 days ago)
All big.LITTLE and DynamIQ processors can run all the cores simultaneously. This was never an issue on Android (except for a some very early versions, but that was over 5 years ago). It was only Apple who had this thing of not running all the cores simultaneously.
Big Boar (6 days ago)
will there be soc's with some of this, this 2018?
Gary Explains (4 days ago)
No. You can expect some announcements this year, but you won't see the A76 in actually devices until 2019.
TMan786 (6 days ago)
Spectre? Meltdown? Tell us Gary, are they still an issue for this silicone?
Hiếu Nguyễn (6 days ago)
I wanna know how is the Mali-V76 compared to Intel HD Graphics
kiDOu (8 days ago)
Hey Gary, can you make a video comparing the Apple A12 cpu with the next snapdragon when it launches.
Abdullah Zafar (8 days ago)
Will qualcom use g76 instead of adreno ...?
Gary Explains (7 days ago)
No.

I would like to see Linux Arm Laptops...
Sacchi (8 days ago)
The best part ->16 Full HD 60fps decoding.
Da Fuq (8 days ago)
I'll be impressed when ARM can run proper software...
Gary Explains (7 days ago)
Please define "proper software"
Jay (8 days ago)
When will Smartphone SoC is gonna match desktop Cpu level performance. You should do a video on Desktop Cpu vs Smartphone SoC Comparing new snapdragon 850 or 855 with Intel's any powerful CPU
Jay (7 days ago)
Thank you for replying Gary. you made my day.
Gary Explains (8 days ago)
They will NEVER match. The average PC works with a thermal budget of around 65 to 100W. That is why desktops have cooling fans. The average smartphone is less than 10th of that, around 4.5W. No fans.

Arm really needs to work on its mali gpu ...
Hassan AhMAD (8 days ago)
I'll be buying next phone with Qualcomm's soc or switching to apple because i am an avid gamer and clearly the Mali gpu's are underperformers. Also fingerscrossed for the new Mali G76.
Hassan AhMAD (8 days ago)
S8 exynos variant with Mali-G71 MP20 (Bifrost architecture) also lags like hell while playing PUBG mobile.
Hassan AhMAD (8 days ago)
S7 edge is flagship phone from 2016. When comparing the exynos model with snapdragon model , the snapdragon variant clearly wins in terms of graphics performance (Mali-T880 gives about 260 GFLOPS vs Adreno 407.4-498.5 GFLOPS) . Apple and Qualcomm are way ahead of Arm in terms of gpu.
Gary Explains (8 days ago)
The lag could be for lots of reasons, not necessarily the GPU. In fact I doubt it is the GPU. But in terms of the GPU, the S7 edge has a Mali-T880, that is the previous generation of Mali architecture. Arm released the Bifrost architecture with the Mali-G71, since then we have had the G72, and now the G76. Your current device has little in common with the latest Mali GPUs.
Hassan AhMAD (8 days ago)
Gary Explains i have s7 edge with exynos soc and i have recently started playing pubg mobile ... and it lags like hell ... lag after every second or two
RainingComputers (8 days ago)
I think Linux would run better on ARM. Manufacturers should at least provide an option to change the OS.

"should be"
Saad Kidwai (8 days ago)
Awesome video, thank you!
TommyThousandFaces (8 days ago)
Really interesting video as usual. Double the performance is a generic statement many tech companies have done and failed to deliver because it's almost impossible to deliver double the performance on ANY aspect. Also double the performance considering the almost non existant performance of available "always connected laptops" means nothing to me.

Professor!!! Sorry I'm late again !!!! Good morning professor!!!!! Hope I won't be late for the calss next time !!!! You always 'THE BEST '!!!!

How about releasing ubuntu based arm processor laptops
A A (8 days ago)
Hey Garry, thanks for explaining, i have some questions and some thought to share. is Adreno from qualcomm is based on Mali ? or not because its always preform better then Exynos and Kirin in gpu and if Samsung increased GPU cores can they compete with Adreno? and regarding CPU its kinda weird that in s8 the exynos version preformed better and had better battery life, even tho that they under-clocked it to be similar to SD version but not in s9 the SD version preform better and have better battery life. anyway using SD and exynos you can notice that SD is always more stable then exynos and Kirin is the worst always in stability and adopting new Arch (they are around 6 months late then Qualccom/samsung), next kirin will definitely be on A75 because kirin 970 was based on A73 (released end of 2017). they are some leaks already that Manggose 4 will preform way better then A76, isn't it a custom core based on A76 ?similar to kryo? btw isn't A55 outdated, shouldn't they release a new version of it this year ?
Chen Levi (4 days ago)
A A it will be on the s10 (alongside LPDDR5) so its worth waiting for next years(dont forget the 7nm process)
A A (8 days ago)
Btw is there any news about UFS 3.0 ? Or should expect to see it next year with s10 most likely. JEDEC published the specs on January but nothing released commercially by any company
John Patrick Herrera (9 days ago)
What about Exynos 9820 can you explain this please....
NotAdithyaBhat (9 days ago)
But can it run Fallout 76?
Dick B. (9 days ago)
It will be interesting to see how the theoretical performance and battery enhancements translate to actual user experience.
richard ratner (9 days ago)
What happened to Intel ??? Excuse my ignorance.
Amirul Azim (8 days ago)
richard ratner this is a mobile SoC. Intel primarily make desktop/laptop CPUs

U H89 (9 days ago)
How about the security issues? Is that now solved? Spectre and Meltdown and the new variants???🤔🤔🤔 Did ARM talk about that?
U H89 (6 days ago)
CRAKIZGOOD hopefully they fixed the Spectre NG issues as well - I will not buy A76 cores until I know these issues have been fixed in hardware...👍🏁
CRAKIZGOOD (6 days ago)
Arm said a76 have fixes in place .check charbax's interview
TMan786 (6 days ago)
Patches aren't fixes.
TMan786 (6 days ago)
Precisely U H89. You hit the nail right on the head. This is the most important issue to hit computing in the last 20 years so why don't reviewers focus on this? I will not buy anything that suffers from these bugs. Come on Gary, explain.
Mukund Bhardwaj (8 days ago)
U H89 I hope it is.
Vlad T (9 days ago)
Will cortex A76 be equal to a11 custom cores?
Grunty Flatulent (9 days ago)
Whilst I believe that these are all good things, and there's some amazing hardware coming out soon, I do feel, Gary, that you've drunk the cool-aid on the presentations a little. I'd be really surprised if, when it comes out, the hardware can match the numbers on release.

So 4K HDR video recording? Count me in!
Vernardo Reyes (9 days ago)
Best start investing your money into these companies...
angel2901 (9 days ago)
Vernardo Reyes nope, Intel is being raped by this.
Vernardo Reyes (9 days ago)
tiltilfing pretty much like INTC(Intel) and QCOL(Qualcomm)

is there any above 4k?
Basavaraju B V (9 days ago)
@garyexplains @garysims , with #ARM's new #CoretexA76 chipset Micro design Architecture, are we not ending up in same #Spectra and #Meltdown issues that we faced beginning of this year in computer based chipsets #Intel and #AMD?
Joseph Dykes (9 days ago)
Hmm, maybe legit mobile phone mining next year!
Michael Dust (9 days ago)
Okay,daddie😋
Ramón González (9 days ago)
It's good that they are taking consideration the notebook market but at this point buying and ARM notebook is a waste of money unless you want it for the hell of it. It's more than 3 times the price of one of those new atom-based chips with even less performance in real use. Let's wait a few more generations to star getting hyped.

Lelouch V Britannia (9 days ago)
Gary, will Kirin 980 come with A76 CPU ?
Gary Sims (9 days ago)
Lelouch V Britannia Unclear, as HiSilicon hasn't released a A75 based processor yet. Some rumors suggest the next big Kirin will be A75 based and not A76.
gio calle (9 days ago)
amusing video as always gary :)
CRAKIZGOOD (9 days ago)
waiting for 20 core a76 laptop with mainline linux kernel support pls

Great explain like always!! Thanks
Mostafa Alam (9 days ago)
I was about to buy a new phone with a snapdragon 845, should i wait till next year, is it there gonna be a huge diffrence between the two or is it gonna be the normal jump in perfomane like every year ? Ps: i change my phone every 3 or 4 years. Help please .
111danish111 (4 days ago)
The 4k 60 fps video recording will be polished next year .
Mostafa Alam (7 days ago)
Oh okay thanks alot👐, i was thinking about the sony xz2 premiun but if it turns out to be bad i'm gonna wait till next year 👌
Chen Levi (8 days ago)
wait til next year : the new 7nn process will make it up to 30-35% more power efficient (also performance ,but hey its only on paper so whos care ?)
Gary Explains (9 days ago)
If you buy one next year then you will be in the exact same situation, there is always something new just around the corner.

the one you dont see (9 days ago)
looks like apple will have some problems if arm is now able to do windows with no compromise we will start seeing mobile widows devices agian arm will be making more money for more R&D pushing to catch up and even pass apples in house design policies.
Mark Keller (9 days ago)
the one you dont see I can see that happening too.
Sammy Salman (9 days ago)
Not too excited about the GPU for windows laptops, cause nvidia is killing that part lol
Manish Gamez (9 days ago)
1080p is enough for me

Mario Ray Mahardhika (5 days ago)
current lineup is already capable of emulating x86, albeit at a quite slow speed.
mikecar52 It WILL be able to run win32 apps via emulation (think WINE built into the operating system).
mikecar52 (8 days ago)
AFAIK windows for arm will not use programs written for intel processors.
