I have the Sennheiser HD800s. You need a very very good amp and audio source to be able to play them. They are brutally revealing of every microscopic detail and they will either reveal to you how crappy your equipment is or how truly awe-some music can be. I use it with HDVA 600 amp and DacMagic Plus on lossless Tidal.

There's literally no good reason to buy an open back headphone. In what situation are they actually good for. Headphones were made to listen to music on the move or in a studio. Both situations open back useless unless you're completely on your own. 1. Can you wear them on public transport. No! 2. Can you wear them to not disturb others watching t.v. No! Can you wear them in the gym. No! 3. Can you wear them on your own indoors. Yes! But then if you're only trying not to disturb your neigh ours in which case, you probably don't wanna hear them either. They may sound better, but unless you're indoors alone then whats the point? If probably get to use them once a month if I was lucky. Apart from sound, close back headphones literally win in every other aspect.

Really helpful. The Only thing I knew about Open Back Headphones, was that they have some sound leak and that didn't appeal to my liking, but now that I know that they're helpful for hearing the enviroment around me, I'm definetly going to consider them.

SHP9500 70$ thank me later
Presley Chan (1 month ago)
Don't get the grados, get the Phillips Shp9500s, $50 to $60 on NewEgg and they can compete with Senhaiser HD600. They are by far one of the most comfortable headphones in market, not just under 100, 200 or 300, the WHOLE market.

You have a great ability to describe things clearly, and your voice is ideal for these types of videos, ie flat/no accent, don’t speak too fast or slow, not a high or deep voice, etc Random compliment I guess, but you rock. Thanks for doing what you do.

I had some I guess open back ear buds as a kid and loved the way they sounded. They were Phillips and had an open back to them.

I got a question. So I'm aware that open back headphone provide sound leak. Are their any times at which the sound leak from the headphones is audible on the microphone? Like if I'm playing a game and talking to someone might they be able to hear a loud explosion?

thanks for absolutely no information. i think anyone could explain that 'open back head phones' are OPEN and sealed ones are closed. FIND A NEW DAY JOB
Celery Ofdeath (4 months ago)
A really good explanation. I'm a studio engineer. Headphones are my life. Theres one more advantage of open backs: less ear fatigue. Try listening to a pair of nice tightly sealed Sennheisers for 10 hours and call me in the morning, well you probably won't feel like talking. While I do like the open soundstage of openbacks I do feel like closed is more accurate. From a normal audience perspective I'm sure you don't care about accurate. If you do want accurate Sennheiser hd280 pros for $99 is all you need.

Why the fuck open back even exist? That just defeats whole point of headphones.
C Snap (3 months ago)
You assume the purpose of all headphones is isolation. Yes, open back headphones do have downsides like the one you listed, but they also have plenty of advantages like comfort. Comfort for open back headphones is on another level. I've tested so many headphones in my time and I have yet to find a closed back headphone that is as comfortable as even the least comfortable open backs. Also, there is personal preference. I personally like an open airy sound. It makes things like vocals and instruments shine.
Sketcher0204 (3 months ago)
No it doesn't. Different headphones for different purposes. I use my closed back headphones at work so I don't annoy my coworkers. I use open back at home for the much wider sound stage and overall better audio quality. I like my closed backs, but open back sound is on a whole other level.
Matt Schwartz (5 months ago)
You just don't understand the point of open-back headphones. They provide better audio fidelity than speakers at a cheaper price.
Eudhdhebdh Sjsnsjsb (6 months ago)
I use open back for gaming
Armando Andrés Meabe (7 months ago)
Jeff Eisley (7 months ago)
The biggest issue I ran into with open back is if you're trying to record vocals over a click track or music track. The clicks, drums, or music will leak onto the vocal track recording making it useless. Condenser microphones, unfortunately, pick up everything so this is why these headphones are probably called "reference" headphones, perhaps referring to a studio engineer listening back to previous recordings for mixing/mastering?
The Football Culture (7 months ago)
Open back headphones make no sense, just buy speakers. Amazing...

For i don't mind the sound leak, somehow I find it nice 'cause i want my co-workers to hear what I'm listening into but not that loud like speakers that it might disturb everyone in the office. Just enough that when they approach me and they would hear faint sound of my songs. That would also promote the song and artist in my opinion as they often ask me what is the title of the song I'm playing.
Matt Schwartz (5 months ago)
It's a great way to make your colleagues hate you. No one wants to hear your music.

if closed back headphones had sound isolation we wouldnt need active noise cancelling tech. but we do. try walking down a busy road with your so called sound isolating headphones and see how little sound isolating they actually have.

Closed back headphones or surround sound headset?
Caseydia (1 year ago)
Open back. If you have to get closed back, but NEVER do surround sound headsets. In fact, never do a headset. Just get an external mic or a antlion modmic.
Waterpanties (1 year ago)
You can't get more mainstream average than this guy. Also, get the M40x instead of the M50x. (M50x is SHIT)
the mdr v6 or the dt 770 are better than the m50x
PrototypeBlack (11 months ago)
+007ferguson007 It doesn't matter who you've watched before buying them, if you reached the same conclusion :) Anyone who knows anything about headphones will tell you that the highs are way too harsh/sibilant and the lows are inaccurate as well. It's not something subjective, since it's backed up by frequency response charts. M50X's are NOT neutral, like every tech guy would have you believe. If you want neutral, you get the M40X's, simple as that. The M50X's are overhyped and overpriced, with way better choices in that price range. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy them.
007ferguson007 (11 months ago)
Domotecq I'm not stupid. maybe follow your own advice there? marques' review wasn't even one that I watched before getting these headphones so thanks anyway 🙃
PrototypeBlack (11 months ago)
+007ferguson007 Don't be stupid, inform yourself. If you want an actual review for the M50X's, from an actual audiophile who knows what they're talking about, check out Z Reviews or metal571's video on them. Marques is a tech guy, not an audiophile. Don't fall for the hype.
007ferguson007 (1 year ago)
Caseydia I said not another person. I know you said it. you're the only one. sorry that your ears are messed up man that sucks 😕

What about bass, chillout, dance electronic music.
David Brown (5 months ago)
iheartv4g1na that's not entirely true. They have a very controlled bass. It won't be thumpy, but if you want quality sound, then that's a good thing. Most bass-centric headphones are garbage when it comes to mids and treble.
iheartv4g1na (6 months ago)
open back headphones have little to no bass because it just leaks out so don't buy them for bass
have both duh tho if you only prefer certain kind of genre investing for just only one and buy decent open/closed is nice but for me who open to many genre I cant settle to just one, open back best for acoustic ,classic etc while close back for dubstep, edm, bass heavy music etc and for my budget getting one that is decent for all is difficult so i end up with ath m50+ath ad700x+fiio e10k dac amp for around 250$ all 2nd hand,I really want grado actually for the open back one but sadly I can't find any decent priced grado in my backwater country

If you want a good, inexpensive pair of open backs, go w/ the Sennheiser HD 518's. I use them constantly and they are easily the best headphones I've ever used due to the soundstage Marques talks about and you can get them for anywhere from $50-$70. Side note, most open-backs are exponentially better w/ an amp, so I recommend getting, at the very least, a cheap 20$ one on Amazon in conjunction w/ your headphones.
Adrian Negreanu (9 months ago)
meh, the HD 598's are often on sale at 100$

JollyImpulse (1 year ago)
I'm thinking about making my own gaming headset with an open back heaphone. The reason why I'm doing this is because I get paranoid while wearing noise canceling headphones since I don't really know what might be going on in my environment. One of my main concerns for open back headphones is how much of the audio leaks out. Can someone let me know how the open back experience is? If I chat with my friends on PS4, will people in my room be able to tell what they're saying?
Caseydia (1 year ago)
Open back is multiple times better than closed back in terms of sound quality. I have 2 siblings and my mom in my house, and the noise cancellation/isolation doesn't bother me nearly as much as I thought. The soundstage, imaging, and mids are better and- like Marques said- they just sound much more natural.

I'm looking at getting myself a good pair of head phones at the moment I use senhizer mx365 and the Apple ear pods or whatever there called depending on what I'm listening too but I want to step it up I'm thinking about going open backed because I love a good sound stage on some music like I love passenger who Is a folk singer and I like to be able to listen to every instrument I also listen to some heavy bass music but most of my listening is done in my room and I am going to me putting some sound proofing in so would you recommend open or closed back I also am on a tight budget under 200 Australian dollars would be good thanks
