1557 ratings | 114717 views
The Dell XPS 13 (9350) and XPS 15 (9550) has been refreshed with Intel's Skylake. The Dell XPS 15 also has a new but familiar design. Check out my review and comparison of the recently refreshed Dell XPS 13 and Dell XPS 15. Do both of them have a video editing software?
Jumbomuffin13 (2 months ago)
15's keyboard could've been a bit spread out since it has more space. I don't get why the speakers are not on the front since it has the space...?

Is 13 inches big enough?
dany manchster (2 months ago)
So I am a student and I usually open multiple browsing windows on chrome and firefox, open word, open power point, and open excel all at the same time. would the xsp 13 be able to handle such workload without any lagging?
izhar fikri (4 months ago)
is it worth for student mechanical engineering??.. will use autocad, solidwork apps

Is there removable battery for xps 15??
Taras Krychkovski (7 months ago)
Will be enough 13,3 for a lot of typing and internet surfing? Or better to take 15,6? I mean could be 13,3 harmful for eyes? Is it comfortable for day-to-day work?
ackyash (4 months ago)
I have XPS 13 Full HD which I bought July 2015, now planning to get XPS 15 with Full HD screen cause my eyes hurt if I use the XPS 13 for too long. For normal day to day work the 15.6 inch screen is better or hook up the XPS 13 to external monitor.

THANK YOU for very good recommending comparison between the two XPSs. Im so excited to wait for the 4K i7, 512GB SSD model which the most money burned one. But seems it gonna bring me to the good-hood of using experience. :)

Is XPS 15 good for software Developers?
WALKNER official (9 months ago)
thanks for info bro
Jim Pringle (9 months ago)
Totally. I have the 13 and have had zero performance related issues with programming and doing the occasional graphic design. My friend has the 15 and it's a beast. If you plan on doing any machine learning don't even try it on the 13. Waste of time, I learned the hard way. The 15 does have a dedicated nvidia card, so you can run small data sets successfully without waiting 3 days.
ikentlester (11 months ago)
i prefer buying the xps 15. now, my problem is where can i buy laptop? is it online or in store? any suggestion?
CL H (6 months ago)
ikentlester I don't know where you live, but you can buy it on www.dell.com I think

for those worried about dell customer service, here is my experience with them so far. my xps 13 (nicest computer ive EVER owned, blows my yoga 700 out of the water) suddenly wouldnt wake up after putting it in hibernate mode. i tried everything, pulled it apart and disconnected the battery etc.... nothing worked. i got up with dell and they immediately sent someone out to my house to check it out, he was there 3 days later (i talked to them on a friday, he came monday) well the phillips head screw was giving me fits when i tried to take it out and i ended up slightly stripping it, when he got to it he must have finished it off so there was no getting it apart at my house. he sent a box that arrived two days later, i packed my computer up and sent it off expecting a good month or so wait... it arrived on a wednesday morning, they had already fed ex overnighted it that afternoon! i got it back in perfect working condition. they replaced the motherboard. i had no problem buying the xps 15 after this experience
Ferdinand Jr Imperial (1 year ago)
What will I buy from those two if ill choose high performance and high graphics in gaming?
Jim Pringle (9 months ago)
You definitely want the 15 over the 13 if you plan on doing any gaming. I've got the 13 (love it) but any kind of quality 3d game just doesn't cut it with the Intel integrated graphics.
اهتمامات (11 months ago)

Why can't we just have both of them. I have the new xps 15 and want the 13 to travel with.

I have XPS 13 9343 from July 2015 and now planning to get the XPS 15 9560.
Cameron (1 year ago)
This video was very helpful! Im going off to college in a few months and am serious considering these but im still not sure whether or not the 15 will too inconveniently large... Any suggestions??
Amanda Roth (1 year ago)
Cameron Been seriously considering these too. From what I hear, the 4.4 lb weight on the 15 isn't too bad to carry around, especially if you're keeping it in a case in a backpack to and from classes. So if you really like the bigger screen and the better specs, it'll probably be worth a tad bit extra weight that shouldn't be too bad.
Joseph Remington (1 year ago)
Would the XPS 13 be good for music production programs like Fruity Loops?
Jim Pringle (9 months ago)
Ya, it will work fine. I'd go with at least 8GB RAM and get a bigger M2 hard drive.
Nefarious Vurse (1 year ago)
I want the dell xps 15 9560 maxed!!! ( what i mean by maxed is all of the things it needs completed no more need )
Jack Burton (1 year ago)
I've got the newest XPS 15 9560. Love everything about it except the weight. Coming from a MacBook Pro (13 and 15). Might return my XPS 15 for a 13, but not sure I wanna give up this awesome 4K 15.6" touch screen. Great video!!
Jim Pringle (9 months ago)
I feel ya. I've got a 13 and absolutely LOVE it, coming from a MacBook Pro 13. I would have liked more performance and a dedicate nvidia video card. Pondered the 15 but after playing around with my friend's I realized it was just too heavy (and big for my taste) for me to be lugging around every day.
Matthew Moniz (1 year ago)
Thanks man! The weight isn't too bad considering it's 15"

which one is better for Adobe Programs ? such as premiere +illustrator + photoshop. and is there any laptop better then DELL in this major or in this way of media

The XPS 15 is better since it has a dedicated GPU which is important and a must have with the programs you mentioned.

I ended up buying the dell xps 13 (9350) with maxed out specs over the newer xps 13. I would've bought the Kaby Lake version but the Intel Iris 540 graphics on the skylake easily outperforms the newer intel 620 graphics. i7-6560 skylake processor CPU Intel iris 540 graphics 16GB DDR4 RAM 512 PCIE NVME SSD QHD+ (3200 x 1800) infinityEdge touch display Thanks for the help man! subscribed!

+Praveen Sewak some video editing and light photoshop. I don't use it for games since I'm not much of a gamer.
Praveen Sewak (1 year ago)
Lj Castillo what do you use it for?
Louis Law Weize (1 year ago)
I'm currently using a MBP 13 inch Retina Late 2012 and so far my laptop has shut down on it's own less than 10 times I believe in the last 4 years? However, I realise that it's starting to slow down. Not in terms of booting up time or anything big but it's when I watch Youtube videos, I like watching the videos in full screen but when I switch back to default view, it's not the smoothes when it comes to the transitioning from default view to full screen and vice versa. There is noticeable lag when I swipe for mission control but only when I put it to sleep a lot due to coursework purposes and there can be a lot of tabs opened. All these web browsing is done on Chrome, if that makes any difference. My question is, should I get the Dell XPS 15? I definitely want a 15 inch screen, a 16GB of RAM and quad-core i7 processor. What are your thoughts? I can also settle with 512GB/ 256GB SSD since all my work are on Google Drive.
Harry (1 year ago)
I got my XPS 15 2 days ago with 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD. Did they bump the max specs? Fantastic video btw
Harry (1 year ago)
+Tyrelle Davenport It's great! I do a fair bit of video editing which it has no problem with and it's nice having that extra bit of storage. I think 500gb really isnt enough for me because of all of the video files/games i keep on it. The 32GB of RAM only really makes a difference over 16GB with video editing. Even then, it's a bit overkill. I'd only recommend this over the other model if you need the extra storage and/or edit a lot. Other than that, they will perform the same pretty much everywhere else. Overall it has been excellent. Very good performance and it looks great too.
Tyrelle Davenport (1 year ago)
Harry How is it working for you so far? I was thinking of buying that model?

I have the XPS13 laptop and i absolutely love it. Initially, i wanted something portable and i was debating if i should get a tablet or a laptop. I ended choosing the XPS13. But now my needs changes, I need more screen real-estate to work. If only it had a bigger screen... Oh wait, they have the XPS15 model! It's in the mail, should be in next week. It's the regular HD screen but with the 84Whr, they advertise up to 17h of battery live but in real live condition i'd expect something closer to 12h, which is still head and shoulders above the competition, specially considering the size!
Ralph Winter (1 year ago)
They both sounds good, thank you for your review, made my choice a lot easier. I will go for XPS15
Matthew Moniz (1 year ago)
You're welcome! Glad I could help and you'll love the XPS 15!
Faith Stern (1 year ago)
I need a highly portable laptop with ability to run Autocad, Archicad, Revit, Sketchup, Photoshop etc, will the XPS13 Handle the use of 3d with only 8 GB of RAM? The 15" is really too big for me to carry around everyday..
Faith Stern (1 year ago)
Thank you for the advice, I went to check out some 13" models and I didn't realise just how small it was, not great for my work. So I've decided on the 15" in the end. Hopefully the extra heat won't be a problem. Thanks again for the information!
MidnightMuzic (1 year ago)
You could always upgrade the ram easily but for the type of work your doing generally the bigger screen will benefit you better. Just remember that the 15" is just the screen size and not the body itself. The Xps 15 has the 15" screen in a 14 in form factor and the 13" is a 13" screen in a 12" form factor
OshyNeed (1 year ago)
Should i buy it? I mostly i just watch youtube and netflix and use some documents. I am worried because i don´t know if i will get used to the 13 inch screen coming from a 20 inch monitor.
Varun Mishra (1 year ago)
i'm confused which one to buy . my daily tasks include programming with r and hadoop, web browsing, moderate gaming(like spiderman shattered dimensions, arkham knight). so which is better for me ?? i even got doubt of buying the touch or non-touch version
Varun Mishra (1 year ago)
thanks man !! will u suggest the touch or non-touch for my usage level??

Hi! Great Video! Im new in the channel and i would like to know what did you mean with Portable PowerHouse (xps 15) because i want to move the laptop to different places like school or a restaurant, will be confortable?
Matthew Moniz (1 year ago)
The dell xps 13 can handle all the producitivity tasks like you mentiuoned but if you plan on gaming you'll definitely want the XPS 15. I'd go with the 15.
Derik Davis (1 year ago)
Is there any option for the xps 13 with the core i7. I am beggining my computer science degree and I just love the size of the xps 13. I don't know if I could pass on the proformance on the xps 15
kamusik (1 year ago)
Yes, make sure to get the Skylake (i7-6xxxx) version! If you want it to last in the future its great because it has a Thunderbolt USB-C, which is in my opinion, the replacement for standard USB ports in the future
champion9124 (1 year ago)
+Mike S By "Future proofing", I mean something that will last me. it's obvious that technology updates rapidly, I just want something that won't feel slow. Such as my previous i3 dual core laptop. That shit felt slow when it was new lol
Mike (1 year ago)
+champion9124 No such thing as "future-proof" with the tech world. Every 6 months theres a new generation that out performs.
champion9124 (1 year ago)
for me it's more future proofing. I want something that will last for years and still wont feel slow. Otherwise id just stick with a cheaper laptop. And if I want to do something more intensive, then the option is there
Mike (1 year ago)
You kids realize you don't need any performance for Computer Science.. Like relax, you aren't making Facebook.. You are making a few scripts which can run on a potatoe.
Prad Silapajan (1 year ago)
i dropped my xps... can i still return it ?
b zwiers (1 year ago)
Miyukii of course you can return it. but do you have a i insurance? because otherwise you not can have your money back to spend on the same computer!
Rubin Vriesman (1 year ago)
So the XPS 15 would be a better option for a programmer? Or will the xps 13 do just fine? I'm starting a software engineering education. So I need a new laptop.
Thomas Downing (1 year ago)
13inch screen size doesn't leave alot of real estate for code!! 15 would be alot better if you don't have an extra monitor.
Karavusk (1 year ago)
I will start to study computer science soon and I need a laptop for university. I thought about getting the XPS but I dont know if I should buy the 13 or 15 version. I would probably play games like League of Legends and Hearthstone too and a bigger screen seems always nice for watching videos (I would use the 1080p version though). Is the XPS 15 still very portable and light? Can I still easily use it to go to university every day?
Matthew Moniz (1 year ago)
+Rubin Vriesman xps 13 will be just fine. The 15 would be better for a video creator or someone who uses photoshop
Matthew Moniz (1 year ago)

Great Video, I'm only unsure about getting the Xps 15 because I saw in some forums about many bugs on the computer, the sleep issue, the space bar issue, etc. I'm really in between both.... I would prefer the xps 15, but I know nothing anymore...
Alex Russell (1 year ago)
Hey Matt great video (subbed), Can you please help me decide on which XPS to get ASAP? (Needs to be before the end of the month- so in about 24 hours in Australia because thats when the sale ends) I am a uni student, so I need a laptop that is light, compact, and has a good battery life. I am also looking to start doing some casual photo-editing, and make a travel video at the end of the year and would like to travel with it. I am very undecided between the 2016 Dell XPS 13 (Powered by 6th Gen Intel Core i7 Processor, Windows 10 Home, 8GB memory & 256GB SSD with Intel® Iris™ Graphics 540, full HD non-touch)(AU$1,954.00) and the 2016 Dell XPS 15 (Powered by 6th Gen Intel Core i7 Processor, Windows 10 Home, 8GB memory, 256GB SSD & GTX 960M, full HD non-touch)(AU$2,124) With the sale the price jump is soo small, making the XPS 15 really tempting but I think in terms of battery life and travel the XPS 13 would be a better match. What are your thoughts on whether the XPS 13 with iris graphics would be good enough for some occassional photo or video editing, or whether I should just future proof with the XPS 15, but I am worried about the XPS 15's battery life. Thanks in advance from AUSTRALIA!
Alex Russell (1 year ago)
Thanks so much for the quick reply, ending up getting the XPS 13 for its superior portabilitiy and battery life. Cheers
Matthew Moniz (1 year ago)
Thanks Alex and welcome to the channel! For light video editing assuming it's 1080p and photo editing the Dell XPS 13 will be fine. It's also small, light and portable which is perfect for travelling. But for a couple $100 more the XPS 15 seems like a better deal, you're getting a more powerful processor and a stronger GPU. The XPS 15 is pretty small as it is. It's a 15-inch laptop in the size of a 14-inch body. If you have the cash get the XPS 15. If not the XPS 13 will still be fine.

If you're running virtual machines a lot (for school), which one would you prefer? If I buy the 13 I will get 16 gb of ram, but love the fact you can upgrade to 32 gb on the 15.. Kind of torn between the two right now because I love the small form factor on the 13. Will be using an external monitor when working at home anyway
Tommy Knockers (2 years ago)
Excellent review but I'm still undecided. I'm looking at both as refurbs so the price is about the same. Both i7, 16GB and 512SSD setups with 3k/4k screens. I understand the dual vs quad proc and lack of the 960 on the 13 but I won't game on it or do any heavy lifting (CAD, PS etc). Mostly media consumption and MS Office productivity tasks, but I'm coming off an older xps studio 1640 and I'm worried the 13 screen will feel too small when at home for long periods. This will be my daily driver at home and on the go so I'd like it fairly light with decent battery (7-8 hrs) which is right between the two. I've test drove a Surface Pro 4 for a couple days and at work it feels fine but at home it feels small (the difference between sitting at a desk close to it vs sitting back on my couch).

Chris Wood (2 years ago)
I own have just purchased the XPS 15 - FHD/i7/16gb/512Gb SSD. Lovely machine. I do find the keyboard to be a bit uncomfortable, because of the large trackpad/palmrest, this has pushed the keyboard further back. Thinking of replacing it with the XPS 13 - FHD/i7/8gb/256Gb SSD. Would you say the XPS 13's keyboard is better due to the smaller trackpad? Also, do you think I would see much of a performance drop in day-to-day use? I occasionally encode videos so I assume this would take longer with the dual core i7. Thanks
Daniel Platon (2 years ago)

Which is better for a programmer and a web developper?
Jim Pringle (9 months ago)
I have the XPS 13 with an i5, 4GB RAM, and 51i2 SSD. It works like a charm for programming and multitasking. I'd prefer 8GB but I bought it used and got a great deal. Forgot any kind of serious gaming though. For that you'd need the XPS 15 with the dedicated nvidia card. I hook up to an external monitor when at home since the 13" screen can feel a bit small on occassion. Overall I'm really happy with the weight (I travel a lot) and the battery life. I also got one of those external batteries as well which has saved my ass many times on the road.
Shrav P (1 year ago)
if u use a lot of split screen ..like i do while coding..ull need a bigger screen i guess
Lord Rixuel (2 years ago)
but running executables, tests, dependencies might take time o.o i think i will pick xps 13 then lol ty all

ryad dadi (2 years ago)
great review matt ... witch one would you suggest for video editing ? i the 13 model looks amazing , but i'm afraid the screen is too small for that
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+ryad dadi Thanks Ryad! = )For video editing you will want the XPS 15. It has more cpus and a dedicated GPU. The Dell XPS 13 is to weak unless you plan on only editing 720p video.

Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+Manvir Singh I'm glad a video on the DELL XPS 13 vs Dell XPS 15 helped you decide to go for a iPhone 6s Gold.
TheVsb321 (2 years ago)

Manvir Singh (2 years ago)

EDYGHEORGHE 36 (2 years ago)
15" is for gaming and video editing?
EDYGHEORGHE 36 (2 years ago)
I get it! 15 has nvidia gpu
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+edy Gheorghe yup! It has a dedicated graphics card
AppSniped (2 years ago)
Where is the Dell XPS 13 trackpad driver you mentioned to resolve the issues? I'm not aware of any driver for the trackpad on the Dell website.
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+AppSniped It was part of a big windows update so if you're fully updated then it's already installed.

MATT. I really love the xps 13 EVERYTHING IS AWESOME but I also need a dedicate graphics card but the xps 15 is worse, battery life , bigger. what do you suggest?

markg546 (2 years ago)

Of the 20 something reviews I've watched on the Dell XPS 15 9550, this one is my favourite. I love how in depth you go with it. I recently watched your ASUS Zenbook review and I wish you structured your review of the XPS 15 9550 like that in terms of thermals and assessing gaming performance. Would it be possible if you could create a video showcasing the gaming performance on the 4K XPS 15 since there's not enough information online? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+ryanceestah thanks Ryan! I appreciate it. I didn't structure this one as its more of a comparisons and these two laptops are not in the same category. I have not reviewed the xps 15 by itself yet which I plan to very shortly and it will be structured like the zen book. Thanks again for watching !
kamikazemind327 (2 years ago)
I have the XPS 15 and I have two complaint. My screen was flickering brand new from Microsoft Store but I believe an update fixed that. Also, when I put in sleep mode it literally loses 40% of battery after like 6 hours. I'm hoping an update solves this because that really is a bummer being that this is a beautiful crafted and seems to be great running machine. Any tips?
Kevin Xin (2 years ago)
+WinR CK Yeah that's what I was gonna say. If you really wanna let it sleep that long you might wanna just hibernate or simply turn it off instead
WinR CK (2 years ago)
Never put it on sleep for that long..
Mike Hunt (2 years ago)
+kamikazemind327 Hibernate if you're going to leave it inactive that long. Sleep should only really be used if less than 1 hour between activity.

What a great video! This is what I looking for. I have some questions Is xps15 portable for collegue students(boy)? and what is real size of xps15 . you said It's like 14inch
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+Seong-il Yun Thanks! = ) It's definitely portable, especially for a 15-inch laptop. It is like a 14-inch laptop because the frame size is the same as most 14-inch laptops. Hope that helps!
Nikit Siddhartha (2 years ago)
I'm thinking about getting the 15 in the next month or so. As far as gaming, I was happy to see the framerate on D3 be so high. I mainly would be playing that but I do play more demanding games from time to time. Do you think the i5 is significant for my needs or would the i7 be significantly better/more future proof for medium gaming? I realize the dedicated graphics is the most important for that, but am not sure how much of a role the processor plays.
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
For gaming the i5 is fine. Only get the I7 if you need to edit video. Gaming is more about the gpu
Rob (2 years ago)
Great video and I'm glad I found it as I'm trying to decide between these two. I realize this is very subjective, but do you really notice the difference with the size? I've always used a 15 inch and I'm concerned about such a small screen. I just don't know what to do! Will the additional 2 inches be that noticeable? Thanks for the vid.
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+Rob The great thing about the 15-inch Dell XPS is it actually feels like a 14-inch since the bezels are so small. It's actually the same size as a 14-inch laptop. I definitely prefer it over the 13-inch model.
Rohit Kumar (2 years ago)
brilliant video :) loved it ..... actually i wanna use XPS models for my android development softwares like Android Studio and other stuff....will go with XPS 15 when i will save some money ;)
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
Thanks Rohit! Glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching !
Benjamin sides (2 years ago)
Nigga with that price you get a better notebook with 980m
Kevin Xin (2 years ago)
+Benjamin sides I seriously don't think xps series is any good for gaming. I am a software programmer and sometimes use game engines for game development. In fact I don't believe in mobile gaming anymore and I simply got a full desktop setup instead. I personally think that a laptop as thin and light as xps 13 that runs windows 10 /ubuntu is what developers dream of.
Brad Jacques (2 years ago)
Hi Matt. after all recent BIOS updates does the xps 15 run quiet when only doing productivity work and browsing the web, watching you tube? I'm looking to replace a 6 yr old first gen i7 quad core VAIO which had been a great workstation, however fan noise has always been annoying at times. I'm thinking maybe the xps 13 might be less annoying considering I don't do video editing, only photo editing in lightroom
max silbert (2 years ago)
Great review. I don't understand how you can be happy with the audio though lol. I'm glad that use headphones anyway.
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
The audio isn't great but it's not bad. Headphones are always better
Thirsty Fox (2 years ago)
Love the 15" but it still lacks height. Would much prefer the 16:10 aspect that MacBooks have instead of 16:9. (3:2 is even better!).
Ardy's OP (2 years ago)
thank you. I was about to get the xps 15, but now I know to get the xps 13. I already have a custom built powerhouse, so thanks for the final thoughts at the end.
Ardy's OP (2 years ago)
+Matthew Moniz of course! you've just nabbed yourself a new subscriber :) keep up the content.

CharMatrix (2 years ago)
Would the dell xps 13 be any good for 1080p video editing with the i7 processor, 8gb ram, 256 SSD, and the Intel HD Graphics 5500? Please respond thanks :)
CharMatrix (2 years ago)
+Matthew Moniz For the XPS 15 would you mean the one with the i7 6700HQ processor, 8gb ram, GTX 960m, 256 SSD, and the full HD screen?
Matthew Moniz (2 years ago)
+Charllie It can do it, but it will be really laggy. I would still recommend the XPS 15 for video editing even at 1080p.
