I have a question for Jake Kastrenakes / @Jake_K who reviewed the Chromebooks. He said the Acer R11 had a great keyboard, and I was wondering if I could get some more details here. I'm a writer so the keyboard quality is a top priority for me. So I'm wondering exactly what makes the keyboard great, how does it Feel to use?

This was the most helpful video I've found on Chromebooks. I bought the R11 and wasn't sure if I had made the right decision, but like you've said, it just does everything quite well. It's not perfect, but it's an great value compared to everything else. I was most impressed by the sound. It's loud and clear. The screen is bright. The hinge for the touchscreen is firm enough to prevent jiggling. The only complaint I have is the microphone basically doesn't work, but that just might be the one I have. If you're considering, definitely buy.

I think that this gets replaced by the Lenovo Flex 11 as the best one out. It has an ARM Porcessor, is ready for Google Play Apps, has USB-C, HDMI, full SD-Card Slot, HD Screen and is ruggedised and water resistant and it has the same price tag. I ordered it and I am happy to see, how it fairs against the R11.

This review helped lead me to get my first Chromebook for my kids, I went with the Acer Chromebook R11. Thanks for a great, fun and interesting review!

I never understood the obsession of cheap chrome books people happily spend 1000+ on their mac, dell xps or Microsoft surface and pretty much use it just for the internet and word processing.
Terry I (1 year ago)
That's what I'm like. Unless you're playing games or doing some kind of complex graphic design project, people use these things for Office docs and surfing the internet. That's it.

YES, WHY CHROMEBOOKS ARE " A W E S O M E " - Please note that I myself am comparing $200-250 Chromebooks with $400-500 Windows 8.1-10. I have used PC's since the late 1980s. I've used WebTV, I-Opener, Windows Professional 2000 (in the dial-up days), etc. For the past two or three years, I have been receiving 100 Mbps Internet speed from my local provider. I spend virtually 100% of my PC time online. At home, my primary PC has been the Chromebook for the past 1-2 years. My Windows 10 I use only as a secondary PC for YouTube movies, studying (passively and audio turned off) languages, economics, law, and for other educational videos, as well as for recorded or live sports, and as a secondary or tertiary TV (to follow a second or third sporting event in process simultaneously). I hardly save anything on the hard drives; virtually 99% of my files are in the cloud. I keep all of the devices impeccably clean in that I delete history and other unnecessary data almost daily. I also use Android and Amazon tablets, mostly to play movies with closed captioning/subtitles with the audio turned off. When commuting (generally, 20-30 minutes at a time) I do not bother to use any devices (tablets, cell phones, etc.). At 100 Mbps and WIFI-use only (no Ethernet connection to any of the devices I use; I don't like the unnecessary cables) from my Internet provider, the speed test results - under very impartial conditions - have consistently been as follows: CHROMEBOOK = always above 100 Mbps; often 110-120 Mbps. WINDOWS 10 = consistently ONLY 60-70 Mbps. Note that this particular CHROMEBOOK's inherent clock speeds are somewhat better (i.e. higher) than those of the WINDOWS 10's in the tests. Oh, CHROMEBOOKS sold around $250-350 have built-in clock speeds as high as WINDOWS that cost two or three times those prices. The TABLETS speed results = 35 - 75 Mbps, depending on various factors and the tablets' specs, of course. CHROMEBOOK takes a few seconds to boot, and is always ready to go. WINDOWS, described above, takes a few minutes. CHROMEBOOK takes a minute to clean up history, etc., if that's even necessary, because Google automatically attends to those chores in behalf of their users. WINDOWS can take several minutes for updates (and if I shut the Windows down and put it away for a few days, the Windows updates can take up to an hour VERSUS the Chromebook, which is always ready to run. As for video games, I don't play them in that I consider it a waste one's precious time - although it's not a big deal once in a blue moon (I've tested several video games, including my favorite 1980s PacMan. Both the OS's have no problem). I know, it is said that for very high-level, professional photography and gaming, Windows are superior to Chromebooks; however, I'm not comparing a $1,000 PC with a $200 Chromebook, as you can see above. Now, I personally allot 50% out of 100% to the significance of safety and security online and freedom from pop-ups and intermittent viral infections. CHROMEBOOK = no problems whatsoever. No pop-ups. Note that I use free antivirus programs, as well as ad blockers, on both the Chromebook and the Windows. WINDOWS = although I have read lots of technical PC books and researched quite a bit, the WINDOWS can run into trouble with pop-ups and other nuisances (which means using my time to delete them and clean up by means of a couple of free antiviral programs, etc.). Such issues are nonexistent with the Chromebook; in fact, occasionally I run into a warning not to enter a particular website as it's known for viral attacks, etc. I curiously go ahead with the CHROMEBOOK = no problem at all VERSUS WINDOWS, which ends up with some nuisance viruses, which means I have to spend time to clean up (generally, 15 to 90 minutes). Thank you for your attention.

I happen to like my HP C300SA. Sure, it's not the best Chromebook. It does however, do everything I need it to do. The screen doesn't hurt my eyes or give me a headache and the keyboard is very comfortable to type with.

I'm sad that here in Brazil I can't find any "flex/convertible" and/or touchscreen chromebook! I would like to have one instead of buying that shitty Samsung Tablets...

i agree to buy a chrome book i have one. i am typing this with it right now.

Why does a great Chromebook have to be cheap? That is limiting and not smart. I love my Pixel LS a lot better than my Asus Flip 1 or the Acer 720 or the original Samsung Chromebook O owned. I have a Chromebox in my kitchen. The :Pixel 2 is a great machine. Please expand your view. Yes, the Pixel works well and did before it received Android apps. You are locked in a "cheap" vision of laptop.

why are there all these different companies with chromebook? why doesn't google just make one badass chromebook by themselves and call it a day? they have the pixel phone now, so they might as well just go all the way and full on compete with apple and microsoft now

What about the acer chromebook 11? Not r11 but 11? I have the CB3-111 chromebook and it's fast for browsing. If you have a lot of extensions it occasionally stutters for 1 second. Doesn't bother me, still BLAZINGLY fast and 100% worth the $$$!!! :D

Everyone says the Acer Chromebook R11 is so great...But when I get one it sucks. My uncle and cousin are having the same problems as me. Keys aren't working, the trackpad isn't responsive, WAY TOO MANY POP-UPS, it freezes at least 2 times a day, it shuts down on its own and it gets dirty PRETTY easily.

There is a characteristic of a keyboard that is important to me. The ability to see the letters on the chicklets in the dark ... just with the light coming off the screen. Some have this characteristic and some don't. Does the R11 allow good visibility of the letters on the keyboard in the dark?
Ajmal Khan (1 year ago)
