How Fast Is My Supercharged Honda S2000?

7854 ratings | 201773 views
Was supercharging my S2000 worth it? How does a supercharged S2000 drive? Why did I supercharge my S2000? How fast is a supercharged S2000? EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 I'm finally driving my supercharged S2000! Which leads to four questions: 1) How is it to drive? 2) How fast is it - real world, not dyno results? 3) Is it worth the cost to supercharge an S2000? 4. Why did I choose to supercharge my S2000 rather than other options? From a driving aspect, what I like about the modified S2000 is that it maintains a lot of the stock refinement; it doesn't feel significantly modified car from a drive-ability standpoint, it's just as street-able as it always has been (or hasn't been). It's just faster! To test how much faster, I used the same method I've been using since I bought the S2000. I use a VBOX sport and accelerate on the same road in the same direction, in the same gear from 10 mph to 60 mph, and measure the improvement in acceleration in increments of 5 mph. The video includes full details of test results! How much has fuel economy changed? If it's slower at low RPM because of added strain wouldn't that also make it have worse fuel efficiency if you're cruising around at low RPM? I ask because I've been wanting to put this style of supercharger on my Scion.

Engineering Explained you have came a long way i remember your integra now you have a supercharged s2k
rvidal0001 (10 days ago)
mc squared2 well he's referring to the engine actually producing that power, which results in decreased life. You're talking about having an engine capable of , say, 500hp, but only utilizing 300hp. In this case then yes, your longevity is increased because the engine is never actually seeing that load that it is capable off. But if your engine is built for 300hp, and you modify it to squeeze 310hp, then this week decrease the life of your engine.

Hey everyone, I have a few questions for everyone, I'd like some input. So my uncle has a 2002 Toyota Mr2 Spyder that's taking its last breaths. The power steering is dead, the radio is dead, and many of the parts in it are taking their last breath, most notably the engine. He knows I like cars. I've been asking him the same question for 16 years (okay slight exaggeration) "when are you putting a turbo in it?". Now, I've been talking to him, and once I graduate in two years, he *might* sell it to me for practically nothing. I think at one point he may have said $1,000. Idk how serious he was when he said that, but the point is that he'd sell new this dying Spyder because he knows it's gonna be reborn under my ownership. Now, I've been thinking about what I want to do to this car. We know the engine is taking its last breaths, so I'll probably replace it. But what with? I saw in a YouTube video that a built and supercharged Hayabusa can make 500 HP which is crazy for a bike engine (and yes I did say supercharged). Do you think that would work for a car that would be used at the track often? It would definitely be a lighter engine, even with the supercharger and all. Of course the problems are transmission and electronics. Well, what do you guys think?

I am not a fan of Honda's. Not even kind of. While its not AS good. the F20 from an S2000 is Hondas 2JZ.

Enis Yildirim (1 day ago)
You should buy an bigger pulley then the charger will spool much faster in lower rpm but must adjust the boost with the bov
Austell Lanyon (1 day ago)
I like your approach, keep the feel of the car, keep the dynamic of the car and enhance it.. It's easy to get blinded by the 'you could make more power' and then get lost in a world of having to upgrade every other component.. A must see for people who want to get more our of their car and avoid the headaches for going for big power and then having to do every other drive line upgrade.
M M (1 day ago)
Check out LHT performance. A Rotrex has much lower parasitic drag and would eliminate the speed loss in the low rpm with the Paxton.

You’re boring!
bobo2186 (2 days ago)
I feel like there will always be the people who complain about the power. Think of it this way. When the S2000 came out, it was faster than the Mustang GT of its time. Adding 80 horses to a 2700lb car is still a lot. He literally just has to put the kit on with no other real mods. Sure, an S2K can make more power, but to do it right, you start spending a lot more money quickly! I feel like those obsessed with power have never really driven the car the way it's supposed to be driven. Straight lines are cool and all, but... Not what the s2000 was made for. My S2000 is NA and is plenty fast around a track. Do like the idea of instant response of an SC though.

first of all want to say that i love your videos, always had a massive interest in engineering specifically cars but ended up working on aircraft :( think you've done a really good job in the choices you've made on this car but feel like your taking a lot away from it by not getting a new ecu and having the fuelling issues as you said on a previous video the fuelling is always fluctuating and basically wrong (though not massively) at high rpm. Surely it would keep throttle response and overall power better everywhere in the rev range which were pretty much the overall goals you were after.

You need to get a Cobb AccessPort for your Subaru & test the power gains of the upgraded S2000 with an upgraded WRX for a more fair comparison. You'll love the versatility of the AP plus it allows for remapping the original ECU without having to change it. Cobb also makes after market parts for intake, exhaust & the like. Most of their parts can be used with a free off the shelf map or you can get a professional tuner to create maps for you, all while keeping a file with the original settings (if you ever want to restore them).

I looked at supercharging, Turbocharging for my BRZ. Both are expensive and you are at the mercy of your installer. The biggest problem with the FA20 in the twins is heat. Many of the high hp FRS/BRZ cars you see can only run a few hard minutes before they go into heat soak. For me I just went with an E-85 open flash tune. $500 and 5 min produced about 25 whp and as much as 20 lb-ft torque ( conservative). Stock power on a perfect 65 degree day 93 octane at sea level was 172 whp. On a hot day that power could dip to 160 whp. On 105 octane E85 I get over 195 whp. I always get 195 hp. It could be 100 degrees outside. I still get almost 200 hp. Far more torque between 2500 and 4500 rpm. The engine sounds better, runs smoother and still pulls harder from 4500 rpm to the fuel cut off. The only disadvantage is fuel economy is cut by about 20% and you have to find e-85. Even running 93 you sill get about an 8 hp boost and 10 lb-ft boost peak. Does not sound like much but in a 2700 pound car with no mid-range torque it makes a big difference. Like putting an GTi engine in an BRZ.

fatboy19831 (6 days ago)
If there where some kind of electric clutch to disconnect the Supercharger below 4000 rpm you would get the best of both worlds and get better gas mileage around town.
Bobby Hayashi (6 days ago)
I thought the whole point of a supercharger is bottom end torque. Sounds like you have turbo lag except from an sc :/

Muffin Racing (6 days ago)
I would hope that the steering is the same after installing a supercharger. If not, something is wrong lol
Engineering Explained (6 days ago)
Yep, alone not much of a difference aside from weight distribution. More so speaking to the overall feel of the vehicle after changing tires, brakes, rear differential, exhaust, weight changes, etc. and how it still acts very similarly to a stock car from a feel perspective.
MindDezign (6 days ago)
Everybody knows put an LS in every thing is the only way besides a big turbo in the 2015 - 2019 era of performance mods. A supercharger is just the engineering nerd , coming out of you.....great vid .I agree , driving while doing arm graphs is very " engineering " for sure
wu ming (7 days ago)
My guess is that it is not that fast compared to a car that is built for turbo at the factory. I'm sure its fun, but seat of the pants and sound don't really speak to performance. Take it to a track and try top end, 0 - 60, 1/4 mile etc etc. Its a nice project but we can't tell much without some track runs.
Michael (7 days ago)
I recall Lynx Engineering in England getting 400BHP from a centrifugally supercharged Peugeot 306 GTi. It got the full Carillo rods and forged pistons treatment and they said that this kind of supercharging is the only feasible type {being more progressive} in a front wheel drive car, for it to remain driveable. Can't recall the boost level but probably a lot !
inertiaforce (7 days ago)
Engineering explained I like your kit and I like your choice to add 80 horsepower and retain the stock ECU Etc and maintain legality and smooth drivability near stock. You kept things conservative and simple. I think you made the right choice and I agree with your choice. I myself have a project car that is almost stock as well with minor modifications for the same reasons that you gave. And I completely agree with you on the supercharger versus the turbocharger.
inertiaforce (7 days ago)
The fact that you went with a supercharger and not a turbocharger indicates that you have knowledge. I'm not saying that superchargers are better than turbochargers I'm actually a fan of turbo chargers also but for A street car I think supercharging is the better choice.

Idaho is a beautiful place! You should check out my brothers' custom powdercoating business here in the valley! I think if you coated the valve cover wrinkle red, and the compressor on the super charger the same, it would look killer! Their business is FinesseWorks, and they do incredible stuff and I'm sure they'd appreciate a visit from you!

Screw the haters dude. I love your decision to supercharge this car. I've only driven the S2000 stock and it's already a quick, agile, and great feeling car! The biggest challenge with a car like this is maintaining that linear power band, and this kit did a damn good job at that! I'd be extremely happy if that were my car! I never cared about peak numbers or best straight line performance.

Fred's Car World (9 days ago)
Completely agree with you about the choice of a centrifugal supercharger to "respect" the power characteristic of this engine. Also completely agree that this engine (and its agile body) doesn't make it a street car but more a race car. As an owner, I drove it "cruising" on roads (of Corsica for example), but I bought it to mostly drive it during track days. I always thought and said that it has the Type R spirit : the S2000 is not a roadster but a Racester !
